Remington 870
Hello to everyone on the forum, I'm new here, andI just wanted to say that I have really enjoyed reading all ya'lls posts.I am about to be ("buying") my first shotgun, since I'm turning 18 in 2 weeks. If ya'll could give me any input on the Remington 870 Super Mag, I would gladly appreciate it. I have grown up using Remingtons from shotguns to rifles, including: shotgun(1100, 870 wingmaster) rifles (742, 710, and different sorts of 22's). Thank yall.

Should I go with the regular 870 Express, or should I even bother with the Super Mag? i wll mainly be going dove and turkey hunting and maybe duck huntingin the future. Also should I go with the 26" or 28" barrel?

Welcome. Great gun. Might want one of the two barrel combos. Shot barrel and a slug barrel. If you want to do some deer hunting in certain states.Definatly cant go wrong for the price. I prefer the pump to the autos for relibality.

Well I live in Baton Rouge, LA right now and hunt in areas around Port Allen and Lottie. We are able to use rifles, so i don't think i will need the slug barrel. But on the other hand i am going away to college next year in Monroe so i dont know whether i will be hunting up there or not. And i dont know the gun regulations up there either.

The MSRP for the super-mag is only $50 extra. Well worth it if turkey or duck are on the list in my opinion. However if you're not turned off by the idea of a used gun....or the use of an auto you might consider a used 11-87 (or a whole slew of non-rem) in your price-range. Some of those turkey loads can get alot meaner on your shoulder than a 30-06. An auto will weigh a little more and the action itself with absorb some of it for you. You'll hear person after person preach of the evil known as the auto-shotgun for waterfowl hunting but I find there are only two requirements. Keep the thing clean (and DON'T over oil it) and don't let it go in the water when its below freezing. If you're willing to do that...then there's no reason to shy away from them.

I wouldn't waste my money on a 3.5" gun. The only advantage to a 3.5" shell over a 3" shell is a a longer shot string.
Take the extra $50 you save in buying the 3" version and put it towards a case of shells or something useful.
