Best deer rifle under $600

looking to get a new rifle here pretty soon, i like the Tikka T3 but don't know much about it, really like Winchesters, just want a good looking rifle that has good accuracy

All tikka rifles must shoot 1" groups before being sold. Two friends have t-3 rifles and both shoot sub 1" groups with a few loads.

Add CZ rifles (escpecially if you're fond of the mauser-styled actions) and Savage to your list. Both are excellent shooters. I don't know if there's a MAO gaurantee on either. But both have great reputations (mind you, there aren't pieces of art, but they put that bullet where you want it...what more can you ask?) and I've never heard of a savage doing worse than 1MOA...in fact I here more about them being .5MOA out of box.

cp, you ask 25 hunters this question and your liable to get 25 different answers. And the answer is - there is no right answer. There are the different deer, terrain, max. shot range you expect, type of action, and on and on and on. I own rifles from remington, ruger, marlin, savage and browning - in levers, pumps, and bolts. If I was to have just one rifle for most North American deer hunting it would be a bolt action and (even though I don't have one in this chambering) in .30-06. As for manufacturer, I would lean toward the Savage 111FL. Its inexpensive, reliable and a lot of shooters would agree - the most accurate out of the box rifle you'll find.

RE: Best deer rifle under $600

Depending on where and what terrain you will be hunting, I will take a Marlin 30/30 for an "inexpensive" deer rifle. I have personally gone back to my 22 year old Marlin and have taken a 120 class 10 point and 2 does this season. My youngest son has been using the same gun and has taken a nice 8 point and a doe. All deer have fallen within sight of where they were hit, and 3 were neck shots and never took a step. We are hunting a place that is THICK and shots are under 100 yards (most are under 50 yards).
I would also seriously consider a T/C Encore. With it, you can pick a caliber to fit your needs. I have one in 300 WSM, and my son has one in 270. Both perform flawlessly.

if you dont mind synthetic stocks get a remington 710 in either 270 or 30-06 or if u want wood get a remington 700

I would go with the Savage Mod. 110 in the 270 Cal. myself.

For the price I dont think you can get much better or more RELIABLE.

Just my thoughts.

you are probably the first person I have personally ever heard actually recommend a 710 to someone. :DI cant imagine why someone would buy one when they could have a Savage package for the same money (and a better gun to boot)

Just the other day Dicks Sporting Goods advertised a Savage 116 syn/ stainless steel/accu-triggerin 270 wsm with a scope for 450$. If I had the money I would pick one up just because it a good deal. Savage is not the best looking gun , but pretty guns don't kill deer accurate one do. If I was in your posistion I would buy that rifle sell the scope for 40-50$ and buy a Bushnell Trophy series 3-9X40 with in silver finish off the net for 90$ +shipping and tax and you have a damn good dear rifle for less than 600$.

I could always switch guns if youd like ..........another Savage 110 this time in 7mm rem mag!!!

*The only point Im trying to make is, for the money a Savage has the accuracy along with the durability of lasting alot longer than the 710. If you shoot 3 shots a year the 710 may be an ok gun for you. But if you shoot 12 months a year, I wouldnt own one.

RE: Best deer rifle under $600

I picked up a Savage 111 package from Dicks for $374.00 including tax here in Kentucky. The scope is kinda a "piece" but hey i killed my first deer ever with this gun. The first time i shot a rifle was with this gun. Had them bore sight it and it came with a sling which is also a piece. I am going to upgrade the scope and bases and purchases a good sling and ill have one hell of a deer rifle for under $475.00. I think out of the box accuracy on this gun was amazing. Chambered in the 30-06. I picked up a 710 also and they guy there was like dont buy that here shoulder this and it was the savage. I dont think the 710 barrel is free floating, but to each his own.

RE: Best deer rifle under $600

I have the Rem 710 in .300 win mag. It certainly is not pretty and maybe some things aren't perfect about it but I can get 1 inch groups out of it at 100 yards. I only paid $297 for it but I did have to replace the scope on it though. The Bushnell it comes with is about worthless. I have nothing against the higher end Bushnells but the sharpshooter it comes with would not hold zero AT ALL. With my new Leupold VX-1 3-9x40 I am very happy with the gun.

Of course if I had to do it over again. I would probably buy a Savage without a scope and put a good scope on it. Live and learn I guess.

RE: Best deer rifle under $600

If you are speaking of a rifle only for $600 you have many options. If you like Winchesters you could go for an Ultimate Shadow Blued model for under $600. Remington, Ruger, Browning, Weatherby Vanguard, & Savage all have rifles for under $600. So you can take your pick of what fits you the best. I've got several rifles that shoot tiny groups but when I go hunting I pick the rifle I shoot the best free hand for the occasion when you can't get a good rest.

RE: Best deer rifle under $600

i am going to add my .02..

if you are just looking for a good deer rifle that is accurate and reliable, you don't need to spend even close to $600. I bought a Winny M70 for $400 and it performs quite well. I do want to suggest looking at SAVAGE. i picked up a model 10 in 7mm-08 and i will be foolish to say this isn't the perfect deer rifle. it cost me $350 brand new. 22" barrel, wood stock and cheap scope. As long as i do my part it's does it's part. The rifle is quite durable too and don't even get me started on how accurate this gun is.

hey i tried to figure out how to post my group but cant figure it out. little help needed and by the way mossy i do shoot 12 months a year. i hunt with it and i shoot target at a local gun club so the 3 shots a year is a bit WRONG. it appers all your groups are 3 shot mine are 4 or 5 and my best group from my 30-06 710 was from 125yrds and that was 5 shots in a group of .198. although i dont have a pic because it is curently in the hall of records at our club. best record witha 30-06 and done by a youth!

RE: Best deer rifle under $600

Since we are talking hunting rifles, most people shoot 3 shot groups. The guns best group is not important since flukes do happen. It is the average group that has meaning. In other words theaverage of the groups that you can shoot every time that you visit the range. Also most ranges have 100 yard targets instead of 125 yard targets.

hello yes stubblejumper i agree its not a best gorup forum its an average group post and that 100 yrds is standard and i agree thats what i usually shoot but this was a special shoot from 125. the only reason i posted the way i did is because i felt insulted that my gun is crap when it isnt and my temper got a little heated so i tried to insult mossy back. mossy congrats those are some good groups but the 710 can perform as good or maybe better then all the others and thats all i ment by it and i too dont want it to become a pissing match.

I have onlyfired afew 710's and while accuracy was okay it certainlydid notshow the same potentialas many other rifles such as the remington700,savage 110or tikka t-3.The design and quality of machining and finish, simply is not comparable to most other rifles. The design also prevents accuracy improvements such as lug lapping and action truing that can make most otherrifles even more accurate.

700, obviously you are very happy with your 710. I am happy for you, and hope you kill many deer with it. I would never insult ones gun if they are happy with it. If you read my initial post all I said was "I have never heard anyone recommend one". IMHO there are better guns out there than the 710 because of design, but if you and I were at the range together having a blast and shooting targets, I wouldnt say a word, unless you asked me my opinion.

This one is easy. Tikka T3. I have had a .270 Win since they came out and love everything about them! IMHO the best gun out there for the price. It shoots like a $2000 gun and wieghs like one too. I can shoot well under and inch with just about any ammo. When I get selective it gets quite intersting I have had many 5 shot groups and only 3 holes. No I did not miss it is that good that 2 of the five actually hit the holes of a previous shot!!! When money allows I am buying another in the 300wsm or 7mm wsm.

I love my newly accquired Mossberg ATR 100 for a beater/hunting rifle, but for six-hundred or less, the Tikka T3 is one helluva rifle.

RE: Best deer rifle under $600

I recently had the pleasure of shooting a GEM of a little rifle the other day. Made by SAVAGE and sold unter the stevens name, the STEVENS MODEL 200. This little beauty has the internals of the Savage 110 that everyone is boasting of here just dropped into a synthetic stock. The stock is much sterdier than I expected, the triggerpull is crips, the accuracy is OUTSTANDING. I fired about 20 rounds through with a .80 average spread at 100 yards. I'm buying one this next week, as a matter of fact, and I'm spending the extra money on a slick new scope, maybe the SIMMONS MASTER SERIES PROHUNTER or AETEC , or a NIKON BUCKMASTER. I found the gun for $270 after some phone calls, which is mind boggling to me. All of the online reviews are glowing for this rifle as well - it definately fills the void for the budget hunters in ability and price. outperforms a lot of high priced guns too!

Check this out:
http://www.nrapublications.org/tar/Stevens200.asp
http://www.gunblast.com/Stevens-200.htm
It was even given this rifle of the year pre-nom:
http://www.shootingindustry.com/05prenoms.html

Again, this is a serious bargain, no bull**** shooting gun with no frills. If you want a pretty wood stock or a brandname other than savage, by all means go elsewhere. But for pure funtionality at impressive price, this is the rifle for me, at least. Personally, i think it's beatiful with black metal on a blue-grey stock!

Good luck in your search, and check out those links!

I have to chime in with either Tikka T-3 or Browning A-Bolt.

That was also the first time I ever heard anyone reccomend a Remington 710. I shot one a few weeks ago, and wasn't overly impressed.

Amen.A Tikka T-3 is hard to beat in this price range. Accuracy has been outstanding from mine and everyone else I know that owns one. Here's an example.

25-06 Tikka T-3 with Hornady 117 grain factory ammo, 100 yards. No after market modifications to the gun at all. This is how it shot straight from the box.

If you are speaking of rifle only, the sky's the limit as many makes and models are available for $600. If you are planning on getting a gun and scope for $600, then you'll probably need to budget $400 for the gun and at least $200 for the scope.

I like Brownings the best, simply because they fit me better and shoulder a little easier. Although I have no problem with Remingtons, Savages, Winchesters, Tikkas or others. It's just that................................Brownings are better.:D

For instance:

You can buy this beautiful Browning at Wal-Mart for under $600

or you can buy a Savage (like Mossy) and never even have to shoot. The deer will die of ugly.[8D]
