aNY OF YOU EVERY SHOOT A BobCat with your bow. I have shot Hundreds on a 3D range but never in the Wild. I went out last night and had 4 watching me in my tree at 10 yards. It was Kinda creepy. We have a Furbare seson and cannot shoot them until 11/15/04. I seen one doe and she decided to walk up the trail VS down to me. Ill be back again tonight.

Be proud of your deer PLB!

As for the team - any score is fine - it puts us on the board...

I wasn't gonna go out last night (its Wed. as I type this) due to the fact that I hadn't seen anything on Sat. or Mon. night, but I did go out kinda late.
I get up to the far corner of the property to hear a lot of noise. I thought it was just the squirrels and chipmunks until I noticed a small sapling thrashing around. I could see a buck with ivory white antlers just rubbing away. Unfortunately with all the cover I could not tell for sure how many points but he was at least a 6 pointer. He noisily made his way off.
The ground was dry and every step crunched but I made my way to the corner of the corn field and stood behind a giant oak tree trunk. I had a fox come up to about 10 feet away. That was awesome and I wish I had a camera with me! Then I seen deer feeding in the funnel between two fields of corn. It was a mother and twin fawns. The fawns are now just about adult size. I could have possibly shot the female fawn but I thought she was just a little too far. The dumb buttonbuck came up to about 12 feet and never knew I was there. I'm giving the buttonbucks a three strike rule - on the fourth time I am shooting as I need meat in the freezer! On the far hill beyond the corn I could make out 9 deer feeding. And people say there are no deer around...... Plus, I seen three deer on the morning hunt. Now I just need to be in the right place at the right time!

Keep on hunting guys!

Blklab I have never even seen a bobcat in the wild. I have heard that every once in a while someone will see one in the area but they are very rare.

Jen that had to be pretty cool seeing the buck rubbing the tree. If you are able to keep getting out as much as you are you will eventually get one to come by. Then just take you time and make that shot. That always seems to be my problem. I tend to rush things. I think I have it down now this season.

DC I think you may be right about the 500 points winning this thing. A lot of guys are holding out for the big one and I think a lot will go home empty. I want something big but even something around 100 will probably go down if I can make the shot.

Congratulations to you PLB....hell from what I understand, taking a mule deer with a bow is much more difficult than taking a whitetail with a bow so be proud. Your on the board and that's more than 19 other teams can say. It just might make the difference.

I've never seen a bobcat either. Here in PA you have to apply for a tag and only so many get drawn. My one brother was lucky last year and got one. He had it mounted. They are pretty cool.

Double Creek, I read on here somewhere that you haven't seen any deer. That's a shame! Hopefully it is only because of the hot weather. And also I hope that the season gets better for you. Too bad you're not closer or I'd let you hunt here...

Todays report: This morning I set up in my favorite ground blind and waited. The squirrels are terrible! We need some QSM - Quality Squirrel Management!!! About 8 am I turn around to see a doe making her way. I turned around on my stool to get into position. All was fine until I went to stand up and the darned stool creaked. The doe looked at me and took off in a big snort. And it that wasn't bad enough she took three other does with her. I bit my tongue and sat down and waited. An hour later I turned to see a spike trotting along a path. He seemed to be on a mission. Another hour later a very small doe (prob. fawn) came over the hill and almost came into range. She was circling around but then she must have caught a whiff of me. She then ambled back up the hill and out of sight. As I went in for the morning I noticed something on my bowstring. Would you believe a broken strandjust below the serving!!! [:@]

So then I call the archery shop and took the bow in. He said that with only one strand broke that it should be ok. We figured that strand must have been nicked when the serving broke loose. He wrapped some electrical tape around it. He then when over how I shoot and gave me some pointers. Apparently I am 'torquing' the bow and the string is hitting. I have been trying not to 'torque' but it just happens sometimes. Anyway he talked me into some cover scent that he swears by. It is Wildlife Research's Acorn scent.

So, for my eveing hunt I set up in a new spot at the far end of the corn field at the edge of the woods. The wind was at my face and any deer that come out from the edge of the corn had to turn left or right. I sprayed the acorn scent all over the bush in front of me. At 5 pm or so I heard something behind me and turned to see the fox coming up behind me. He came up to 5 feet before he noticed me. Then he took off in a flash. At about 6 a 4 pt. buck came out of the corn came towards me and went into the woods behind me. He should have smelled me but he made no sign. A few minutes after that three small raccoons came in under the bush. The one coon stopped to look at me and decided he didn't like me. Then another coon came up and started towards me. He came within two feet! I told myself that one more foot and he was getting booted:D That was it for tonight. I have never had animals come up to me like that before so I would say the acorn scent worked. Now I just need the right deer to come in to me....:)

Sorry to ramble...I just really enjoy my time in the woods. My husband isn't into it so I have to tell it to people who understand:)

P.S. What do you all think of my string problem?

Congrats PLB!!! Nice pics of the deer and good job.

BLKLAB, I've never seen a wild bobcat. I've heard of people seeing them in the county west of mine. It would be cool to see them or shoot one. I'd settle for arrowing a yote, there're to many around here.

Jen, It seems every hunt has something new to see. Thats one of the reasons I love to hunt.

I just deboned the 2 rear quarters of the deer. I'm going to my cousins tomorrow to grind it up and the St. Louis Cardinal game is also on at the same time. So, I wanted to get ahead cutting it up. One of the quarters had some brusied meat, I lost about 1/4 the meat. The other quarter was perfect. Has anyone else cut a deer up that'd been hit by a vechicle? It was a new experiece for me.
Here's a quick question. What do you do with the deer carcas and bones of the deer after you take the meat off it? I've just been throwing it in the woods for the animals to eat. And how many of you clean the deer yourself?

I'm going hunting in the morning. I'll be watching for deer before I get into the woods:D:D:D:D

Jen, I missed you post before I submitted mine. Nice post. I love to hunt went the animals are active, except for the pesky squirrels.

You know that my bow string broke right at a month ago. The day I got it I shot 150 times. After shooting I noticed that right under the serving (in the middle/bottom of the string) was starting to fuzz. I showed it to the guy working and he put serving over it. That serving lasted about 100 shots then broke off. I took it back and he put more serving on it. I too was torqueing my bow and the string was hitting my forearm guard. Since then I've been griping my bow a little differently. Now I can shoot the bow with out my arm guard.

IMO, I wouldn't worry about your string this year. I would get a new one for next season.

Sounds like you had a great time in the outdoors Jen. I would rather have heard that the proshop put some serving on the string instead of electrical tape. JMO. I like you line about QSM. We just like to shoot them all. Never seem to get them all though.

KK-I have never processed a car kill. We do however do all of our own deer. My son (16) can take a deer and skin it, debone it and have the back straps out in under an hour. Then I have to do all the trim work. We then make all of our own sausage and brats. We have just started this so we are still working on the recipes. We got started on it last year. We built a building with a room just for processing deer (see pic). It did cost quite a bit to get started but we did 7 deer last year. It cost about $75 a deer to just get it cut and wrapped. Another $100-$150 if you get anything made. I figure about $200 by the time you get done per deer at a butcher. With that last year we saved as much as all the equipment cost and we will have it for many years.

That wood table is 10 feet long to give you an idea of size. The room is 15x30 and the building is 60x30. That is a screen poarch on the other side of the windows.
