How bad are Barnett crossbows?

How bad is the Barnett ( all models ) crossbows.
I have a Parker cyclone and love it, but my brother keeps looking at Barnetts because of the $$$$.
He is on a tight budget, but I seem to hear alot of bad things about Barnetts.
He is looking to be in the range of $400.00 or less.
Any suggestions of a good crossbow for him?

DaGriz 10-03-2009 01:13 PM

Tel him to call David at Wyvern 603-659-0575. Best phone call he can ever make.

As far as How bad Barnetts are: There isn't enough space to list all the lousy things about them on here. Buying a cheap Barnett will get him nothing but cheap junk which will bring lots of problems !

He can look at a good used TenPoint, Parker or Excal.

coyote170 10-03-2009 01:14 PM

call David at Wyvern Creations for the best advice and prices you can find!DO NOT buy a Barnett a lot of them are blowing
on the first few shots, beware of them please!Davids number
is 603-659-0575 the best call you will ever make!

Guy, please remember that all the goodys ad up and cost $$$'s on top of the bow ( ****er, bolts, case, etc. )

I was thinking that maybe the Eastman X-Force 300 Pro might be a good one for him.
Any thoughts?

Huntr2 10-03-2009 01:56 PM

for that price

If you dont like Barnett for that price you could get a Excal Vixon ll or a Parker Sparton or a Eastman 300 which is made by Darton. Buckeyefootball

umm, this probably wouldnt effect your brothers choice, but my friends barnett exploded on him on his first hunt.

StoredEnergy 10-20-2009 06:26 AM

I had friend who had a Ford explorer blow up on him as well. Good thing Ford doesn't make crossbows or no one would be safe.

All things mechanical will fail occasionally. It's when they fail frequently and repeatedly that catches my attention. Judging by the Barnett failure posts here and elsewhere, they have my undivided attention.

Huntr2 10-21-2009 05:11 AM

agree

I agree but in all fairness it seems the only bows that people are not having a large number of problems with are Tenpoint, Excals, and Bowtech of the major players. But yes I agree on your observation. Buckeyefootball

Boris, I see you have a "buddy" :)

toormshk 10-24-2009 04:54 PM

i have a barnett for over 17 years have never had a problem with it untill it blew the cable and now they dont have the steel cable anymore. they are useing the string type now. that is on my rhino classic. i am useing my rc-150 which is about 9 or10 years old and dont have a problem with it cause it still has the steel cable. they need to go back to the steel cable. just my 2 cents worth

On a quiet night, you can hear a Ford rust.:barmy::barmy::barmy:

Barnett crossbows are junk. I am a Sales Associate at MC Sports and we have had nothing but problems with them! The Parker BuckBuster or the Eastman X Force are going to be the best bang for you buck both great bows with high speed for low $$

barnett crossbows

I Own a barnett panzer crossbow and I am very happy with it shoots straight and fairly quiet for a crossbow. Owned a wildcat(barnett) years ago put a fishing rig on it and shot alligator gar with it. Largest was 5'9" long never had a problem with that one. I shot alot of rabbits with it also. I happen to like recurve crossbows. A few company's make them very high price but suppose to be high quaility. The panzer has been an excellent shooter using it this year for everything, rabbits to hogs and everything in between. I might even try birds. Used to shoot longbow but hand, shoulder and elbow problems have slowed that down, age sucks! LOL

3Children 11-10-2009 04:24 AM

What blows on the Barnett? The limbs, riser, and string is the only things that go on any bow. I have had to reserve a few strings due to a problem they (mfg) had and corrected. Since Mi is one of the states that now has hunting open to the xbow I have seen a lot of old Barnetts come out and play, none have blown up during the target shooting. One Barnett Predator has severel 100 shots through it and nothing has changed.

srwshooter 11-21-2009 09:00 AM

i have a quad 400 barnett, last season i had a string break. that string was 3 years old. i took it to my local shop ,they put a new string on it. they also told me that my string had broken where it comes off the cam and that most all failures were due to sharp edges left on the grooves in the cams on barnett xbows . they filed the edges down and fixed the problem. according to most bow companies you should replace a crossbow string and cables every 2-3 years just as regular maintance. my barnett is faster than the tenpoint i just bought and shoots just as good.

Good luck with it just be careful!

noidurism 11-26-2009 03:41 AM

i have the barnett rhino sport mag (4 limb). had it for almost 5yrs. now and have never had a problem with it-even after it fell once from 20ft. in my tree stand. i probably shoot it 100-150 times a year (don't see the need to shoot it year round). the orig. string is showing some wear but still is fine but i'll probably replace it at the end of this season. just giving my 2 cents...

srwshooter 11-26-2009 07:15 AM

barnett crossbows are just like cva muzzleloaders, there are twice as many of them out there so you will see more with problems. i've owned both without any major problems.

I have had both, the Barnett was a nightmare, but the CVA
has been a super good gun, love my old black powder baby!

DaGriz 11-26-2009 08:27 AM

Yup, there is a few semi-decent Barnett crossbows but...............for every Barnett that doesn't break, blow apart, or fail to work there are thousands that do.

xboweagle 11-27-2009 08:09 AM

cant go wrong with a 10 point!!!!!!!!!!!!!:rock::patriot:

EZKILL 11-28-2009 02:30 AM

EVEN PARKER IS HAVING SOME CROSSBOWS BLOW UP I WOULD GO FOR THE Excalibur BEST MADE . :party0005:

Seneca SS 11-29-2009 02:33 PM

i'm fairly new to crossbows but i purchased a Barnett quad AVI and it was real inaccurate so they took it in and put a new limb assembly on the front and it will shoot a 2 1/2" group at 45 yards every time--i like it--i also think when people pay around a thousand dollars for a unit they dont complain as loud:hail:

The only person I would complain to would be the dealer I bought it from, but then my brand doesnt seem to have the
problems that Barnett does,so I feel it was worth a little
more to get the quality I wanted.

If you have any questions at all about barnett crossbows feel free to call me at 1800-237-4507. I can answer any question or help you with your crossbow.

Thank you,

Matt

DaGriz 12-01-2009 01:43 PM

Barnettxbows: I have a couple of questions. Why do Barnett crossbows break, fall apart, self destruct, etc, etc? Why do they have only a 1 year limited warranty? Why do the "new and improved" models continue to break risers and have other problems after supposedly being "re-engineered?
Last question; Why does Barnett continue to make and sell such junk?

MissouraMule 12-01-2009 02:58 PM

Looking for a reply from DaGriz;
Saw a posting from you about Barnett Predator xbow exploding and have friend possibly seeking legal action. I would like to contact friend I"m also seeking legal action.

Tks,

questions about their products!:barmy:

DaGriz 12-02-2009 03:55 AM

Why would I waste my time calling them when I have never gotten any satisfaction before?? I'd much rather he answer my questions publicly so everyone can read whatever BS he says. I all ready know what the TRUE answers are, curious to see what kind of propaganda Barnett has to say! ;)

buck commander

I bought my first crossbow, a barnett buck commander on friday, 9-17-10, and shot it on tuesday to sight it in. On the 15th shot the orange serving string broke. I know I'm new to this but i would think the string would be more durable. I followed the instructions about waxing the string after every 5 shots and waxed the flight rail, too. I'm going to call Barnett in the morning to see if theres a problem that they can fix otherwise bass pro shop where i bought said that they would exchange it for another crossbow.

cattrapper 09-24-2010 06:23 PM

The parker enforcer is a good choice also. They got them here locally. 400.00 with the upgraded multi ret scope an 3 arrows.

smokepolehall 09-25-2010 09:01 AM

Now 'all knowed ain't nutten wronged wid dem Barnett CB's, its all the multitude of owners that messed up a perfectly great i say Great CB! :D

Blackhawk690 09-29-2010 09:55 AM

well i guess Coyote has used Barnett bows ? or is he passing long hear say. i personally own two Barnett crossbows and they shoot very well... many times, they are accurate, and fast, but what do i know i only have two of them. and i don't try to keep up with the jones, i use what works without attempting to break the bank.

Mike

Blackhawk690 09-29-2010 10:04 AM

i am sorry but i don't understand why you guys bash something you don't know what your talking about. Barnett makes good bow or they would not be in business much more than a week. they have a 5 year warranty, i bought two of their crossbows and have shot them a lot with NO breakage, or Issues. course i don't abuse my equipment, and therefore don't have problems. the bows are just as accurate and just as fast if not faster than the 1200.00 tenpoint bows. matter of fact i can buy and have bought two crossbows for less than what one of those bows cost, and the Jackals will probably outshoot the tenpoint banker bow.
oh well.... i sure you are even a scent lock wearers too...

smokepolehall 09-29-2010 04:06 PM

Friend i am very glad yer happy with yer Barnett CB's. That being said i have been shooting CB's fer 14 yrs & i have saw ppl hurt by parts coming off the limbs. I don't own a CB that will shoot the 315 yer Jackel will

Blackhawk690 09-29-2010 06:37 PM

Smokepole you hit the nail on the head..... ALL of them there man made crossbows can have a come apart most any time, only God knows when. one is no better than the other because they are all Man made.

Mike
