RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it! Season II

So I decide to make a two hour trip to the north coast a visit my brother. He says bring your hunting gear and we will check out some puplic land near the house. Not expecting much on a rainy, windy day, we scout for about ten minutes between two corn fields andstumble on afresh scrape from this morning. I was excited to say the least. My brother says sit down wind 20 to 30 yards. So we came back later this evening. I didn't get to shoot, but let me tell you, it's been a long time since I felt like I was chewing on my heart it was pounding so hard. Just seeing the deer come toward me was exciting. My brother ends up pegging a nice doe 80 yards from where was sitting. She dropped on the spot when he hit her right between the ears while she faced him and was eating. What a shot!!!What a great day to to get out!!!!

He shot her in the face?? On purpose?? Either a really good shot or a really bad shot or a really lucky shot. Dead is dead I guess. Congrats.

Is that using a CB at 80 yds. to kill the doe or was he shooting a rifle?

Please say it was not with a CB, at 80 yards, and intentionally.

His shot wasn't 80yrds...lol. Sorry about that. He was sitting 80 yards awayfrom me and killed his dow with a 20 yard shot, yes with a crossbow. It had to be one of the deer I saw come out of the cornfield into the woods heading his direction.I asked him why the head shot and he said "following a blood trail in the dark while it was raining on 2000 acres we didn't know would be a tough tracking job."

Glad to hear it was not eighty yards, head shot thought is still a subject that does not get good reviews. At least we now have two data points on the head shot subject. Its a risky shot that has a good chance of being 100% fatal or a badly wounded deer running off with part of it face missing.

I'm gladyour brotherkilled the doe...congrats on that part. Personally, I wouldn't shoot a deer in the head with any type of bow and prollly not even a gun unless it was real close. It's too easy for the deer to move or turn it's head. Theybob there head all over the place anyways. But like I said, I'm glad the shot killed it and didn't just wound it.Just because you shoulder a CB, doesn't make it a rifle....JMO

Well I'm heading out to the new spot with the pond in the woods to check it out. Spose to meet the lady at noon. I have very good feelings about maybe getting a wall hanger out of this woods. Prolly wait till afterthe 9th to take a buck. Since we can only kill a buck during firearms season here.... Hopefully I can take another nice doe with the CB for steaks and sausage. Gonna set up the blind when I get there.

I shot a spike years ago thru the bottom jaw with a 12g slug. Took forever to find the poor thing. Long, slow and painful and the pics are not ones I put in my scrap book.

PS.. lousy shot not intentional..

Took a nice 8 pointer last evening. Broadside 30 yard shot. Arrow knocked him off his feet and he died right on the spot. This is my first deer with a crossbow - very exciting.

Family is glad to have more venison.
