Ladder tree Stand
I went out to move my tree stand to the ridge with couple of big oaks. I got to stand site and all i found was a lock that had been shot! It was a master lock and it was in bad shape from a shotgun slug. It held 1/4' SS cable around stand. Took my safety belt and lift rope too. I am real sure it was the high shool boy acrossed the road from me. He hunts with a shotgun and slugs! I will wait until deer season starts and follow him until i find it and take it back. I will leave him a note telling him he is a low life theif! Like to feed him to the turtles!:D

RE: Ladder tree Stand
thats sucks...
like I'm sure everyone else has, I've lost a few stands over the years too... wehad a problem a while back with losing afew back on my parents property, at the time there was a shady guy that lived right down the road that I'm almost positive was sneaking around back there and took them, but theres no way to prove it, theres also a field that borders their property that gets leased out to a farmer for crops and both of my stands that disappearedwere right on the edge of that field so I guess its not impossible that he(or someone working for him)didnt take those ones, but either way it sucks walking back to your stand and finding it gone, especially if you paid a decent amount of money for it with all the nice stands I've run into in the woods I'd be lying if I said it wasnt tempting to snag one, especially during gun season and with all the out of townyahoo's we get around here, butstill, its something I've never done, unless I found it on my property I just wouldnt feel right taking someone elses tree stand knowing the effort and excitement someones put into their hunting with putting a stand in that particular spot, especially during bow season where its more than likely a local guy(or kid)just trying to enjoy his sport, I'd also hope a fellow hunter wouldnt take mine either, but unfortunately, they do... |
RE: Ladder tree Stand
I feel for you Mike! Scum suckin sons of beeeches! Should be spanked in front of heir mothers!

RE: Ladder tree Stand
I got an extra one, Mike, come and get it!!

RE: Ladder tree Stand
Life is a circle! They will get what is coming to them one day! I only had one stand taken once and that was when I loaned it out to my brother! He put it up in a bad area and it came up missing. Cheap wal-mart stand but it still was a bummer. My one stand is a Iron Duke! Made from 2" 1/4 thick angle iron steel. It about killed my putting it up and they would have to almost die trying to get it. In fact I think it is past the point of taking since last year I noticed one of the small branches has grown threw the stand and a chain saw would be required to get it. ON the new swamp spot I plan on installing a ladder and that makes me real nervous! I almost get half sick every time I leave my game camera after checking the card! They will get whats coming to them someday!

RE: Ladder tree Stand
Dnk, wouldn't do any good to spank as the parents are just white trash. ashucks thanks but i hope to come over this fall and hunt with you and set myself in yer stand! I do have one ladder stand, thats it to use. i have my camo chair folding type and those i will use. I will watch the wind and shower right before i hunt. Such is life and all theives should be hung and shot and tarred and then burned. Or any order of that combo you prefer![:@]

RE: Ladder tree Stand
Well said smokepolehall,AMEN!:D

RE: Ladder tree Stand
I have had more than one stand stolen, but the worst part is that I scout, plan and set up my stands weeks if not months before I use them and then I creep out in the pitch black only to find it gone! It makes for a ruinedhunt and hunting time is at a premium.I have an armload of stands andwould happily let the guy sit one. I would know when he was gonna be in it and I could go elsewhere. I would be happy to help someone score a deer. It's like when I take someone striper fishing. I really don't care if I get one but I sure want to see them hook-up.
Smoke.. I'm guessing if the guy had been polite and respectful you would have helped him out someway and I bet I could talk a spare string out ofany of you guys just by asking.>>>>>>Whack!! |
RE: Ladder tree Stand
I got one for you. I had my stand stolen for me while I was tracking a deer. I shot a doe with my compound bowand was trailing it. I heard men's voices and the clanking of metal. I was in the thick brush, so I could not see what was going on. I continued to trail my deer and found her. When I came back to my stand site, the climbing stix were there but a very expensive NonTypical stand was gone.[:@] I left my stand unattended for an hour.

RE: Ladder tree Stand
Only thing that will ever stop a theif is to be shot in the act, graveyard dead! Then they can call it a hunting accident.:D:D:DI have one last stand and i ain't even putting it up over on that property. They will shoot the lock off, i don't know of any other way to protect it. I will go back to the stool and sitting on the ground on a bucket.[&o]

RE: Ladder tree Stand
Since thieves are everywhere, what kind of stand would you prefer if you had to put it up the day before in order to keep it from walking off? The places I hunt in CA have enough traffic that putting one up weeks or months before is impossible.
|
RE: Ladder tree Stand
If i was a young man i would use a chain-on and either screw in steps or rachet strap steps. Those i would remove the ones 8 ' to 10' above the ground. Unless they tote steps around in their backback they won't be able to climb up and steal stand.

RE: Ladder tree Stand
bah......that sucks for sure. a lot of scumbags in this world. just don't do anything you'll regret later, it's just not worth it bro.

RE: Ladder tree Stand
Ive been lucky, but that sure would suck....what a loser......

RE: Ladder tree Stand
I know the frustration .
I had a walmart special 15' buddy ladder stand with the camo blind that u can get extra, stolen.I got to use it duringearly bow andhalf way through regular rifle season though .The locks they sell with the stands are jokes and a decent pair of tin snips let alone a pair of bolt-cutters can easily cut through them. I was thinkin of different ways to do it different this year such as : build a stand with 4x4 / 2x4 and plywood and some lag bolts that way they wouldnt want to take it , or buy another stand andset up a camo trail camera with infered so no flash is visable , facing the stand so that way i can have a pic to track down the person and settle the score . Or i can just get a climber and carry it to the tree i set up during the pre-season, every day. Its funny that they can have lo-jack for vehicles like cars , trucks , 4wheelers and even a laptops , but not for a treestands . |
RE: Ladder tree Stand
Be my luck they steal my camera also. Thats not my 1st stand that was stole, several from the shed break in several more in the woods. This last one was the cheapest one. Locks are not much good against ashotgun slug or rifle.
|
RE: Ladder tree Stand
Yepp fellas , I also had 2 ladder stands stolen over the years and it's not a good feeling . A true sportsman would have never done such a thing, or even thought of doing it.
Last few years I have been hunting off of the ground and enjoying it more. BOB in Pa. |
RE: Ladder tree Stand
I use mostly screw in steps (Hanging head in shame) and I do just what you suggested Smoke. I unscrew as many as needed to keep the dogs out of the tree and move on.I do make sure I put a nice stout branch in theholes so I don't have try and figure out where the holes were at 4:30 AM. Plus I have a load of trees withsteps already in them and if that spot is the one of the day I carry, but boy I hate lugging stands in the middle of the night.........with apack full of granola bars that stay in there all seasonand with an Excal so wide it's like walking with arifle held sidewaysmy hands are full..
Just remember Smokethat having a stand stolen is one of lifes little things. |
RE: Ladder tree Stand
I like the idea of the camera, I have sole permission to be on the ground I hunt, also if a shot goes off near my stand I can hear it from my house, if I happen to be around. This is a small town, no doubt I would know the face on the camera anyways.

RE: Ladder tree Stand
I can't imagine how pi$$ed I would be if I got up early, geared up, got to my hunting spot only to find that some punk stole from me. I feel for each of you that have delt with that.
I have a Viper climbing tree stand that goes back home with me each trip. I can tell you first hand it sucks lugging that thing in and out of the woods and setting it up. I only got out a few times last year but each time I dreded using it. |
RE: Ladder tree Stand
When i put up stands before the season i poke nails up through the bottom of the padding, that way if someone that isnt supposed to be in it or someone who steals it gets a few new piercings! Just make sure to take them out before you hunt!:D

RE: Ladder tree Stand
most of stands that are stolen here in my area of pa. are on PRIVATE GROUND...
on public ground, very few are stolen.. i hunt public ground and use ladder stand,if i am not going to be there next day, i take the lower rung off and hide it in woods.. your best bet is to get a lock on stand with LADDER STEPS.. leave stand up and remove the lower ladder step and hide it... , i use ladder stand as others are to hard to get into in morning for me.. my ladder stands cost me 49 dollars at dicks.. i put out 2 each season in archery,1 for morning, other for evenings.. i have been doing this for 50 years and never had stand stolen.... someone said they are scum bags, some are not.. they are hunters that are mad that you are hunting in area that they had to themselves for 100 years.. many that have tore the stands down, not stoled them but destroyed them.. at 1 time, i had same feelings and views, but now i dont treestand hunters try to chase me out of woods...... i said this would happen when deer got scare, some have to get that DEER MEAT, and they will steal or destroy your stand.. trust me on this, if i find out who takes my stand, which i will, i will shoot every tire of their pick up and windows too.... |
RE: Ladder tree Stand
Boy am i glad I have such good neighbors. never lost a stand.

I only got out a few times last year but each time I dreded using it. you will be fine, but only do this if you are coming out next day or 2... my family does it all time... i agree with carrying stand in to your spot, old buck is not going to let you get away with that.. thats why i went to LADDER STAND.. what difference going in to hunt.. i also hide a deer cart i made out of a WHEELCHAIR and 3/4 inch conduit.... i am back in woods over mile and i hunt right to dark and sometimes i come out with a buck at 10 pm at night with cart by myself.... so, no one wants to steal my stand,to hard to get it out, most they will do is knock it down..... |
RE: Ladder tree Stand
Where did you buy ladder stands for $49.00? ****'s don't get it!!
|
RE: Ladder tree Stand
ORIGINAL: awshucks Where did you buy ladder stands for $49.00? ****'s don't get it!! it was at PICKS,change P to a D..they are 15 feet high, black and come with cushion.. i think name of stands at comfort stands.. you can look at them at their site on here... you can also get a 4 ft extension for 19 dollars if you want up 19 ft.. my brother takes his son up on one, then hangs his lock on about 4 ft above the top, his son sits on the ladder and dad above him.... he likes this set up better than his climbing stand.. that stand is nice,i sold both my climbing stands...... |
RE: Ladder tree Stand
I have been fortunate I guess.I have never had anything stolen from the woods where I hunt. This year I willbe hunting from Box Stands (Woo-Hoo!!!!!) but plan on using a climbing stand on occasions but I would not leave it anyway. As for the one that are stealing, they should be sentenced to a life of hard work and values like the rest of us....or the state pen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RE: Ladder tree Stand
I gotta tell ya, as a disabled person, I have a stand, and a guy who helps me in and out of it, and I have to say as a formewr police chief they ought to be tied to a tree and whipped! It would be a lesson they never forgot. Because of that scum, I do not hang a stand, I had it donated and I cant afford to replace it should it be taken!

Joe other reason is they dont want others hunting there,so, that hunter destroys stands.. others are drug users who need money.. others are kids... many cameras are being stolen now off trees in woods and lot are on privateland.... all this is do to LACK OF DEER and bad economy here in pa....10 years ago you very seldom heard of stand being stolen,,,,, there needs to be law passed to stop this,if not, it will continue...... |
RE: Ladder tree Stand
I don't understand how the number of maggots increase as the number of deer go down and itdoes not matter why the stands are stolen or trashed. If you wrap a ribbon around a piece of turd....you still got turd...and a thief is always a thief but call them what you want...

A theif is a theif![:'(] all comes back to lack of deer,if there was deer like i saw,you did not need stand to hunt, lots of deer.. those same hunters and others i see today are after MEAT... this year should be a nasty one... meat prices are terrible.. i dont shoot a doe/fawn so kids will have deer someday... you should see the hunters at gun shop this week DESPERATE to get that doe tag in.. these are same people who carry KIDS tags around shooting 4 or 5 doe.. i will post a topic over on deer hunting site on what a WCO said about some of the hunters here in his area ,lycoming co. pa.. that should answer WHY! |
RE: Ladder tree Stand
Good God y'all, them dopers ain't tromping thru these woods around here in hopes of getting lucky to find a deer stand. Most of them folks is city people, and snakes big as my leg around here keep'em out of the woods.[:o]

RE: Ladder tree Stand
I guess I think for the most part when a stand gets stolen it is done by another hunter and not some crackhead creeping around the woodsor some guy looking for an extra doe to feed his family.
|
RE: Ladder tree Stand
No matter the WHY, the fact that we have come to the point in our society that we no longer respect others is just plain said. Doing the right thing counts the most if done when nobody sees it happen!

Tape a bunch of razor blades in unseen areas on your stand.
That way when the theif is taking it down, he just mightcut the hell out of himself. Just make sure you remember all the locations where you taped the blades. ![]() Sag. |
RE: Ladder tree Stand
If i had the money fer a good trail camera. I would set it up in a near by tree to watch my stand.High up where they wouldn't be looking fer it.Then it would take pic's of the low down scurvy dog that was stealing it. Take him to court on theift and or get S O to arrest him/ her and press charges![:-][:o]:D:D:D:D:D:D
