Good question! Here's my 2 cents. First off, the poundage is immaterial. There may be some differing opinions on that, but this is MY 2 cents, lol. I'm guessing you are talking deer, so will say 40 yds max and half of that preferably. They are all pretty similar to a 60# compound in performance. I have both a 175# and a 225# and won't take a shot on a deer past 35 yds. I can keep my b-heads in a 3" circle at 50 yds. [w/ rest]which is fine for rabbits and coyotes, but not for deer.

and here's my 2.8 cents Canadian. My personal max is 40 assuming the deer is calm, not nervous, and eyes pointed away. If I don't have all of that my max is 30 yards.

Being new to xbows.... but hunting most of my life, I just have a couple thoughts on this. 1st being deer are live animals and do have the tendency to move just about the time you shoot. 2nd with any archery weapon there is way more that can go wrong while shooting... may it be a twig or the wind. My xbow will shoot pretty darn fast, and it does have the ability to take a deer at this distance. However Ifeel we owe it to the animal we are hunting to harvest it clean and quick! I do shoot my x bow and compound out to 50 and sometimes to 60 yards but would never try a shot that long.... This might be 3 cents worth!!

As all have said 40 is the accepted normal "far". I think anything past thirty is to far myself cause under thirty and the odds are in the hunters favor, over thirty and the more "anything" can happen. But if you want to know how far is it lethal I do not know. The farthest I have ever seen anyone kill any thing with an arrow was on TV once were a guy was killing one of those dumb caribou, the ones that stand there and watch as the hunter stands up and aims in plain sight! The guy had a compound and hit the thing at seventy yards! Now it was TV so anything is possible but it looked real, but I would never do it!
