Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it!
Wanted to create this post so we could all share our stories about "Todays" activity. We make alot of good post and get a few, sometimes alot of replys but its easy for them to fall down the page and be forgot about. So I thought it would be nice to have a thread where we could all check in and give an update on how the huntings going. For example we might go out and see nothing or see a small doe off in the distance. Some will not want to make a post about just that cause what would you reply to it and say. So with a post were we could get in what the action was for that day I think would be cool. Could be no action at all, but keepeach other on how much we are getting out and whats going on. Made a inquiry post about it and got what I thought was a good response so here it is. Now if you have an awesome day in the stand or say have something extra special to share like falling out of the stand or something that you are totally pumped about like getting a deerthen make a post for it. If you do try to post a reply in here with the link so as all of our great hunting stories can be accessed easily for all to see. So if ya like lets get our little on line CB journal going!

RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it!
Well I will break the ice and tell about yesterday. I went out for an evening hunt, could not drag myself out of bed for the am hunt. But was in stand at 4:00PM. Now the day before I froze, so today I dressed warmer, mistake, sat in stand until six with coat off and still hot! But anyways I did not see anything in stand. I thought I heard a deer pass by in the woods, but who knows them tree rats can play tricks with your head! So I get out of stand at 7:35 and walk past the corner of the woods and I see a deer! It was dark but my eyes had adjusted good and it looked to be a buck, but not certain. He did not run since it was so dark, and he was about eighty yards away so I just kept walking as to not alarm him. Will get back out Wednesday, better luck then.

RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it!
Well you dont hear from me much but I do lurk around here a lot and have gathered a ton of info. But I decided to go ahead and jump in on this.
I was supposed to get in the stand before sunrise sunday morning but the snooze button won that battle. So I decided to make it out by 2:00pm. That I did manage to do. So I sat and waited, waited and sat...nothing. Then all of the sudden MOVEMENT!!!!! I shift my body a little to get in a better position, my blood rushing, then I see the maker of the movement....10 turkey. I was wishing for deer but its always neat seeing wildlife. Needless to say I didnt see a single deer, but I did get to make sure my camera still worked. ![]() ![]() |

RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it!
It's October 9th, thanks giving here. I took the first week of October off work for the opening of archery season here in Ontario. It was a slow week for me. I saw three deer last Thursday night but never had a clear shot lined up. Those were the only deer I saw until tonight. It was the last fading few minutes of light and I heard some movement getting closer to my tree stand. I just told myself to be patient, I have to go back to work tomorrow so lets see how this plays out. I finally caught a glimpse of movement. It was a doe and she was cautiously approaching my stand. I could hear her fawn a little farther back. This doe knew something was up. She looked up at me several times and stomped her feet. She was very nervous. So was I. This has happened to me before though. I stayed absolutey still and eventually she calmed down. Her fawn came into view as she started to move closer to my stand. She finally came broadside at about 12 yards. I raised my crossbow and had her in my crosshairs but there were branches in the way. By now the fawn was literally next to the tree I was in. I made a bad decision and swung my crossbow towards the fawn to take a shot. The doe busted me right away and both blew out of there even before the cross hairs settled on the fawn. I was extremely dissappointed with what I had done. This was my last night and I blew a good oppurtunity I had thought. To my utter amazement the doe ran off but circled back to my left. She stood broadside again this time at 20 yards. I was at the end of the last available shooting light. I decided to chance it and raise my crossbow. She was looking directly at me. I put the crosshairs just behing her shoulder and let fly. I heard a thwack! But was it the right kind? To my utter disappointment again it sounded like my arrow struck a tree.. I watched her run off. I stayed on my tree stand for what seemed like forever and then climbed down. I went directly home to grab some flash lights. I waited an hour and headed back into the woods. I walked to where I thought the doe was standing at the shot and started to look for my arrow. I found it almost right away...stuck in a tree...with blood on it! A wave of excitement passed through me again...to be once again followed up by disappointment. I pulled out the arrow and took a close look at it. I was shocked to see what to me looked like some gut material. I sniffed the arrow and to me it smelled like stomach contents. I immediately marked the spot where I found the arrow and headed back out of the bush. When in doubt back out. I'm heading back at first light tomorrow to look for her. It has been such a roller coaster of emotions for me tonight. I'm sorry for the long post but it feels good to get it off my chest. I'll let you know how it goes.

RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it!
Bad Hayes, sounds good. Confessions of a man on dumb moves is a good sign. No one's going to boot your butt cuz you're doing it yourself. Being a Canadian and all we're going to take it easy on ya! Does are ok but......
Good luck finding the doe. Backing off is the right thing to do. Try to get some help and organize your search. Again, good luck tomorrow, I hope you find it. If you ever take a fawn please don't let us know. |
RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it!

RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it!
On oct 10 at 4:15 pm i was in my stand swating at mosquitos for about 10 min went i seen a flicker and looked up to see a big doe watching me. So we stared at each other for about another 10 min when she walked off. So i hit the doe bleat can and nothing. So around 6ish i hear the corn snapping and here he comes when in front i give him a grunt and stopped him at 20 yrds put the crosshair on him and in a 30 yrd dash he expired. Hes a very big bodied but littler 8 point rack. ive seen this deer for 5 yrs and now hes mine. But next is his daddy and let me tell you hes a freak. I would post a pic but it says the file is too big. but ill try else where.

RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it!
Hey was in my stand this morning and the wind was blowing. Twas glad fer that as it were way to warm to be on a deers stand this morning. Saw my regular cat squirrel comes down same tree i am in. I don't think its all that happy that i picked its tree to put ladder stand in. Skeeters were getting blown all over the place and that made me happy. Heard a Gobbler gobble 3 different times after day light this morning, didnt' see nuttin!

RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it!
Well I did not make it out today because of the rain and strong winds! Will try again tomorrow. I did however see a small break in the weather and went out on the barn roof and shot my Tekan twos and they hit right on. Its 23 feet up and its the best practice I can do to have the treestand feeling.
|
RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it!
We have fairly heavy rain right now[:@] but it's supposed stop in the morning.:) It will be a good day to be in the woods tomorrow before first light. I'll have details when I get back in the evening.;)

RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it!
Went out hunting a new property yesterday afternoon (10/12). Was raining like crazy- nasty weather. I sat on the ground on the side of a hill, near a major trail. 30 minutes after I sat down, a 6-pointer walked right by at about 20 yards. Would have been an easy shot, but here in Ohio we're only allowed 1 buck, and I'm not going to shoot my only buck this early in the season if it's a small one. He walked past me and messed around under an apple tree, eating apples for about an hour. Didn't see anything else after that until I left to walk back to the truck. Saw 3 deer in the beanfield next to where I parked.
|
RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it!
Hey oddsmell, I had a very similar hunt today! I didn't hunt this morning because it was raining early, so I slept in. But it cleared up at noon and I went in at 1:30PM, set a trail cam near a scrape that's been getting hit fairly regularly, then went to my stand. I didn't see any deer, but I saw my good luck ground hog and then just as I was about to leave around 6:10 PM, I caught a slight movement and thought I saw antler!
Sure enough I spotted a nice little 6 point with perfect symetry not 10yrds behind me and to my right. He stopped to get a drink at the little creek and walked right past my stand. He took the exact route that I took getting to my stand. He looked up, and he thought something wasn't right in that tree, but resumed walking past. :) He would have been easy picking but like you said, it's too early in the season to take one his size. I've already seen bigger and the rut is yet to come! I had a great day!!!:):):) The butcher just called and said I can come and pick my deer meat from that doe I recovered on Sunday.;) |
RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it!
Well this was another fine day and a cool one. Coolest one so fer but nothing was seen today but couple of cat squirrels. Will be out in the morning unless called fer work.[8D]
|
RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it!
No hunting today but I did manage to sprain my ankle at work so I won't be hunting tomorrow and that sucks.[:@] I'm hoping I'll be good to go for next week.;) Figures, it's Friday the 13th![&o]

RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it!
Made a double lunger on a fat spike this afternoon at 7:05 PM @ 18 yards broadside. He came in alone and ate corn for 5 minutes until the ole Ten Point QX4 pushed a 100 grain CrimsonRaptor through him. He only made it 35 yards. I only shot him because I know a needy family that wants the meat. Now my archery season is over until November 4th when Black Powder season starts since I've already taken a big 8 pointer Sept. 29th and now this bucks. I'd rather be lucky than good anytime. LOL. I've got to let that stand settle now for three weeks until BP season and hopefully the rut will bring em back in.
Sorry no picture. I just plain forgot! BBO |
RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it!
Well yesterday was an awesome day! I was at the local hamburg "pop" shop and was eating with dad. He had a friend come in and sat down and started talking to us, its a guy dad met through a prison ministry program forpeople to go into prison and witnesses to people. Some how they hooked up and became good friends. Any ways sorry to get off the track but this guy tells us of some property he had bought and planed on building a house but said he likes the town life and will just let it sit. Found out this is thirty five acres. He says he sees alot of deer on it, I think ya what ever, if I had a dime every time a landowner told me that I could hunt up north with Don! So my dad says lets check it out. Well to get down to it I go out there and holy crap! In the half hour I was there I found two Huge trials! Like ten inches wide of nothing but solid tracks! I jumped one nice buck but its to thick to see him good but he had a nice big body! Rubs all over the place, and I only went about half way in! Sad part is I think I have milked momma out for all my hunting money and if I went out and bought another ladder stand I would be had! So I may just try and build some ground blinds and such but this is great! I have a good spot now as alot of you guys seen my pics but have always wanted a second spot so that I would not over hunt my honey hole, but this spot puts my first spot to shame. Sorry I wasted alot of space on this, but was just so pumped to find another good spot!
But after that me and dad decided to go out and sit in our ground blind at our other spot. The wind was blowing real hard and probably should not of even went out but was nice to sit in blind with dad for four hours talking about really nothing but just having a good time ya know! Sorry for the long post but it was a great day! |
RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it!
Good job BBO! Sounds like you are having a great season! Also have you used your "BuddyBO Gota Go" container yet? LOL! Good job!

RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it!
Sat up over a bear bait today for about 5 hrs til my butt and back were done, lol. Saw a cub, had two cubs, a sow and a yearling on game cam there. I'm after the yearling cause it's cinnamon, and know there aren't any cubs to orphan. Oh well, better luck tomorrow!

RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it!
I wasn't going to hunt today because of my sprained ankle but some of the swelling went away so I tuffed it outand got into my stand by 2:00Pm today, (respect!):D:D and at 2:55two doe came running towardsme but behindme. I don't know why they were running but one of them stopped 18 yrds away, but again, behind me.[:@] They turned back and went the direction they came from.[&o]
I didn't see any more action until5:10 and I spotted two deer bedded about 40yrds from me, I'm not sure if they were the same two I saw earlier or not. They got up at 5:35 and fed away from me. Didn't see any antler today, but a nice hunt none the less,;)despite the wind.[:@] |
RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it!
well yesterday i setup on a well used deer trail a huge trail, i'll get pictures soon ifi can. I waited it out and found out it was much colder than my clothes would allow me to stay there. A few minutes eariler i heard some leaves wrastlein around moving tward my feild edge but nothing. I got up expecting to scare a huge buck off (my luck) but it was two dang chipmunks playin in the beanfeild. i'll be back out tomorrow night!

RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it!

RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it!
Fri Morning I went out, saw 5 deer. Again they were all too far, closest was just a tad over 35 yards. But a wonderful day in the woods enjoying Creation.
Didnt hunt Sat, winds 20 MPH and gusting to near 30. Sunday was in the tree by 6:40, let things settle down. Legal shooting is Half an hour before sunrise here to somewhere close to 7:10 is legal. At 7:22 2 Does come out from behind me on the right and move to where I take a trail to my stand. The lead doe is smelling and stops dead in her tracks where I had walked by earlier (about 27 yards out). She smelled for a long time, raised her head and looked dead at my stand. She neverpanicked, butafter about 2 mins of a staring contest, on her part I dont make eye contact, she backed up two steps, turned around and walked away nervous. She knew something was not right or normal I think, but didnt know what it was. She didn't stamp her foot, blow or flag but she didnt take too long to move off either. Then at about 8:45 I had a shot at a nice 3x4 at 24 yards but I missed him. He really did some wild careening maneuvers when he heard my Crossbow thump, jumped about2 feetinto the air and kicked his heelsway out. I found about a dozen cut white hairs and several small spots of blood, but nothing else. Bolt had one small spot of blood on it, mostly mud, so I think I just grazed him when he jumped the string like he did. I got my buddy anyway and we looked for over 4 hours without finding any more sign of him being hit. I was really dissapointed, but have never seen a deer jump a string like that one. |
RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it!
Omega, I am curious, did you have rubber boots one when you went in to your stand? I always wear them and I've had several deer walk the exact trail I use to get to my stand and none of themhave smelled my presence.
|
RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it!
No to the Rubber Boots, same boots I have hunted with for the last three years. I have not had a problem with deer scenting me before with them.
I did change this year and instead of using "NoScent" spray went to the "EarthenScent." I have convinced myself to go back to plain No Scent but the guy I hunt with uses the Earthen Scent with effectiveness. His stand is only 5 yards from an open field with Cattle, mine is 150 yards into the woods, so maybe that is the difference. Irreguardless I am going back to Scent Free because it has worked well for me in the past. |
RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it!
Interesting!;)

RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it!
Tonight was the best hunt i've ever had in my life!!!!!!!!!!! WoW is all i can say. I got done working the chores on the farm and I gotdressed and packed my gear and headed for the atv. Jumped on and rode a ways down the road and up a farm drive. I met a few other hunters up there but they were talking about gun season and noone was bowhunting.Ichatted abit and headed up into the bean feild on foot. I made it to the feild edge and cocked my bow. I looked down the pipeline for an odd visitor deerthat sometimes hits the opentrail through the middle. no deer there. I walked down the line 300 yards andwent5 yards off the feild facing into the woods. I was expecting to see them move from thewoods where they bed to the feild. i got a few pictures of the trail before my camera died:(I had some good pictures to take too. Btw,I sat for2 1/2 hours and decided it was getting a bitdark and i had a waysto gohome. I decided to pull amove that i'm known forin all hunting. Speaking the language lol. I grunted a few times and started raking theleaves withmy hand violently. A few seconds laterDeer took off franticly lookingfor the"ghost buck" that was me at the base of the dead tree. I got excited and kept grunting when their movement slowed to get them spurred up again. Finally theystopped and islowly stood up for a shot at one. I couldnt seethemfrom the ground.I stood all the way up and caught two does on each side of me and a100 class 8point buck. I wouldnt mind shooting him though. Idecided to slink down and move in for the shot. I got into range and The doe snortwheezed. I quickly thought and snort wheezed back. They still thought i was theghost buck. i knew that i was on thin ice but i kept moving. I stood up for the shot and there was a grapevine bundle in the way of my vitals. I took a step to the right and a doe caught my movement. They were on the move.Ilet out a long maaaaaaattt and they stopped.AgainI moved into range. Stood again but with only a shot at a doe. couldnt find the buck. Iturned around topull the shot offon the doe. She caught movement and i followed them tothat powerline and i stopped, grunted, snort wheezed, and stopmed my feet. they stopped in the middle of the powerline. It was now or never. Iput the arrow in the barrel and made a short walk to the edge of the woods and turned the corner. A HUGE buck atleast 140's and 12 points, tons of mass was standing there. I was too shakey to pull the bow up and flip off the safety before he took off.an AMAZING hunt and You can bet your bow i'll be back there soon!!!

RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it!
Well me and dad went out to the new spot that I talked about the other day and boy is that place kickin! This time I went all the way back in and walked around looking for sign. There is a swamp area in the middle and that area was past the rubs that I mentioned before. So I start to walk around it when I find a sidewalk! yes, a deer sidewalk! This thing had to be 12 to 16 inches wide, solid tracks! Walked down it for a while and came out of the swampy area into deer heaven! I bet I found a dozen fresh rubs in a fifty yard stretch of woods. Found two real nice scrapes too!So on the one end of this is a pound and on the other side is RR tracks, whole thing in this spot by rubs is say fifty yards, perfect funnel! Found a nice dead tree with a bunch of limbs down around it and me and dad worked at it for about an hour talking and having fun setting up a natural blind. Was done at five and figured it was to late to leave and go to other spot so figured I would wait it out there and see. Had two big does get to within ten yards, but I let them pass cause i want a "tender" one if ya know what I mean. LOL. Good day!
|
RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it!
Its another duck n goose hunting day, sure ain't fer deers! Its raining winds blowing 35-40 mph and its got to be 65 degrees outside.[&o]
|
RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it!
Today was my first time out (10/17/06) of my second year of hunting. I got out to my ground blind at about 5:30. I didnt see anything and with the wind blowing pretty hard i couldnt really hear too much. As i swung my head around to scope out my left side, I instantly froze at the sight of a pretty big doe at about 17 yards. This was the first time i had seen any deer while hunting so my nerves were running wild. As the doe walked directly into my shooting lane, i decided to pass on her. She had two fawns with her and i really didnt want to shoot a doe with two fawns.
So i watched the 3 for about 15 minutes until they moved on. This may not seem very exciting but for my first time out this year it has really motivated me to be persistant. I am now hooked. |
RE: Your Hunt Today! Lets Hear it!
I got in my stand by 6:00AM thinking they would be on the move with the rain on it's way. By 10:00AM I only saw a big raccoon, that was all.[&o] I left when the rain came hard.[:@] I'll try again tomorrow.:D
