Silent Deadly Weapon
#1
I just got off the phone with an Oklahoma Wildlife Law Enfocement Officer to find out why I am not allowed to hunt with a crossbow. His reasoning for the law is because a crossbow is considered a "silent deadly weapon". I explained thatmy crossbow is a lot louder than my vertical bow and just as loud as one of my .22 long rifles. They he recanted and said that crossbows can be fully loaded, cocked, and fired with a trigger pull. Again, I reminded him my .22 does the same thing. This is really dissapointing because I really enjoy shooting my crossbow but would really enjoy taking an animal with it as well. Foam is all good and fun to shoot at, but I'm missing that adrenaline rush.
I am wondering if anyone knows of any petitions that I can sign, or any suggestions as to how I can go about making crossbows a legal weapon?

it's a shame that you can't hunt with your xbow. i think the reb is right about a petition to your lawmakers. the general public is ill informed re xbows. i know i was before i bought my xbow. good luck.

Baloney! You can hunt with a crossbow in OK. There is a provision for persons with a disabilty to use a crossbow there. Unlike Michigan, I beleiev all you need is a Dr.'s letter attesting to the fact that he believes you are unable to pull and/or hold a regular bow. Michigan's criteria is the toughest of any State regarding crossbows for people with disabilities. Still, 35,000 people hunt with them. I'm sure if the criteria was less stringent, like OK, there'd be 300,00 users.

Ryan: Actually, I think your xbow is much louder than your verticle. What it will take to change the laws there is a grass-roots movement like was previously suggested. Ya'll may want to point out the fact that xbows have been legal forever [so to speak] in Ar and will bring more $ in to the Ok DNR. If ya'll can convince them that "their" $ is going somewhere else, you have half the battle won! Good luck, and let us know if you need petitions signed, ect.

Most states (I think) have a wildlife board that really makes most of the decisions. Find out when they meet and make an appearance. I am working with a couple of guys to see about getting our bow season open a little before 10/16. Just don't know why they start it so late. Maybe it's so the skeeters are gone. Loads of unused doe permits so it's not a population issue. The maybe I can work on Sunday hunting.
