folks,
this is my first post. (i "got into" crossbows because i damaged my right wrist/arm/shoulder in FEB '06 in an "on the job accident" & my orthopedist says that i will never be able to shoot my recurve again.)
i just "aquired" an older Barnett Rhino RECURVE crossbow (nope.NOT the current compound Rhino.), with a "crank-cocker",scope, quiver, case, sling & several bolts.
i "checked out" the information on "the worldwidewierd" on 2 search engines & found nothing of real interest on this particuliar bow.
so, a few questions:
1. when was it made (approximately)?
2. does anyone here have actual expierience inhunting whitetails witha Rhino Recurve?
3.does anyone have an OWNERS MANUAL on this bow?
4. anyone here have aPARTS/accessories manual??
5. when things wear out and/or break, are there anyPARTS for this bow available?
6. what broadhead bolts do you recommend for deer hunting?
7. and finally, i'd like recommendations on books on crossbow hunting??
THANKS!

SW: You may try giving Barnett a call for some of the questions you have. As to xbow reading material, get ahold of DJH at [email protected] for a free issue of Horizontal Bow Hunter, the quarterly publication of the ACF. It's a good read and there are other benefits for the $20 a yr dues.

Its about12 years old,I have the one my wife had before she died.
I don,t use it but I did take care of it for her.I think the paper work for it was in her files and was thrown away when I moved.
There are a few things I can tell you about it.
It is very accurate if you do a trigger job on it.
It is slow compared to the newer one,but it does a good job on deer with a heavy arrow; it will shoot almost exactly the same speed with a heavy arrow as a light one,
The mount for the rear sight[ or scope]is very weak any slight bump will change the POI and you will have to sight it in over again.
There were several models but most of this will apply any how.
Since it has been obsolete for more than 10 years there may not be any parts available, but most of it is easy to have made [better than the original]by a machinest or a gunsmith.
20 yards is about the best range to sight it in for, gives a PBR of 23 yards.
Hope this helps .Lee

SW,PBR means point blank range. Its the farthest distance you can shoot while aiming at one point and still get a kill with in a predetermined point of impact. For example. A kill zone of six inches on a deer when shooting my 300 win mag has a PBR of 325 yards. This means that if I aim dead on in the six inch circle the deer can be up to 325 yards and I will get a good hit from zero to 325 yards. Out side of the PBR I will have to give it kentucky windage or hold over. Hehehehe I beat you all to it! LOL!!!!

Yes its very similar. The furthest range that you can make a hit gets attached to the letters PBR so the 23 yard PBR means you can aim dead on from zero to 23 yards with out holding over the deer's boiler room. Picture a 6 inch tube from your bow to the deer. The maxium point blank range is the distance the arrow will travel and still be in the six inch tube. With my 300 I can shoot from point blank to 325 yard, aim dead on the boiler room and still get a good hit. With in that 32 yards the arrow will travel no more than 3 inches above the point of aim and no more than 3 inches below the point of aim. Heres another way to look at it. Draw three lines from the bow to the deer. The center one is from the arrow tip to a six inch circle 23 yards away. The second line is 3 inches above the first line and the third line is 3 inches below the first line. If you have a 23 yard PBR (acutally called the maximum point blank range) then your arrow will not go above the top line or below the lower line up to 23 yards. Clear as mud? LOL. A drawing is better. If you still do not understand I will see if I can find one I can send you. The maximum point blank range is the best way to sight in a rifle. I have sighted in my 300 so that if i see a deer(which has 6 inch vitals) I aim dead on for up to 325 yards. This info is in reloading manuals but I have yet to see the info published for arrows.

I suggest a 2219 with a slight helical and a 100 gr head all though a 125 gr head does vary well ;either will shoot through a deer broad side if you don't hit any big bones. My hunting buddy is going to borrow it this year but he is trying to decide between 10pt and excaliber before buying one. Lee

Dear EVERYONE,
THANKS for your help.
the following may be of interest to someone,( besides me of course) but perhaps not.
i called Barnett this PM & talked to "Nick", who has been with the company for years. he is sending me an origonal owner's manual & parts list with photo. (he told me that the Rhino Recurve is rather rare & was seldom sold in the USA, being mostly an European sold item. despite his many years with barnett, he has never seen a Rhino Recurve "in the flesh".)
the bow isover 10 years old & was made in England. it's 150# pull & @240FPS.
all parts are still available.
again, THANKS!
