I had an Army buddy that married a Korean chick when he was there and brought her back.
They had me over for dinner all the time.
I'll agree with you, joel, that the food looks nasty but boy is it good!!!
I must say, I do love Korean food.
I also LOVE kimchi but it gave me the absolute WORST heartburn I've ever had.

ok guyz.... u lived on base... im living in the actual korean economy. u havent tried the nasty bad stuff.. kimchi is ok... but u guyz havent seen the bad side of korean food just trust me on that. there are a few dishes that are pretty good.. there are LOTS that are just plain nasty!!!!
nastiest kimchi i've ever seen was with like rotten mushrooms in it. the mushrooms looked like what a worm looks like after sitting in the little plastic can for 2 months (u know just kinda elmers glue like) hehehehehe... like i said, if u like sea weed and really spicey peppery food then korean food might be your fancy.

oh joel your wrong.
me and my round eye wife lived in the vill!
had a korean landlord in his building.
i also had the heat in the floor, all tile bathroom that you on some occasions had to smell the methane ripping out of the drains, little frig,no oven.
i lived right out there with them.rice paddies on two sides off the building.
and you talk about kimchee have you seen them when they get the cabbage?a mini truckload, they cut it up , and then put in pots and sealed them. they spiced it up of course.
AND BOY when they bust the top off one of them pots after fermenting for a couple of months WHEW!!!
yep used to buy stuff at the corner store(for those that havent been to korea i dont have time to explain)on weekends when i didnt want to go on base.
and yes i have had seaweed ,roll up some rice, maybe beansprout kimchee and not to bad. the only thing we avoided was the water .we got our drinking water on post. not to many people can say they have toted a five gallon jug of water on a ten speed bikes back rack(you had to have one for water ,gro,clothes,etc...)about four or five a week.
i know what your going through brother and someday you WILL look back and have an appreciation for your life that others dont have.
there are probably a few things WE experienced that you aren't. but thats best. we were older and dumber.you remember the soju question? well it's a rice based liquer that will loop your world. you never know what the proof is going to be, so you dont know how drunk your going to get.anyway dont try it,bad headache.
enjoy joel as bad as i talk about korea, ENJOY!<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

well.. i still hate sea weed. hahaahaha... and we don't have access to base at all. so there's certain things that u're able to get that we're never able to get. lets just say i havent had a good steak in 6 months... beef is still $10/lb.

OH man i'm sorry joel!!! how do you do it. i could not have made it without base previleges. you need to find a nice Gi to help you out. i would have bought your grocerys so you didnt have to rely on the korean market. they didnt have any standards like the usda set here. i feel for you now ! sorry.

NOOOOOOOO! i know what your talking about but no way. i used to work with two korean mechanics that were civilians.they were old school. both had been in the korean war. i used to get sick watching them eat. i watched mr. yi boil his ramen noodles, there good i eat them, but he had minnows (live) that he put in at the last minute. happy eating! they would eat fish that we use as bait.
the egg thing. they used to display them in cases in front of stores. the little duck or chicken or whatever would be busted out to show the quality. oh and if you went to the right market you would see dog. yeap rover ,skinned, gutted and laying there for your inspection.now the ones i saw had the head and paws left close by. this was so you could make sure this was your kind of dog.
yeah now that joel pointed out that he lives on the korean economy literally i respect him more. don't get me wrong i'm sure in the last ten years some things have changed. but not that much . koreans have lived this way for thousands of years.
i guess they are on to something you see more old koreans than old americans. you noted this joel?
