RE: If you can talk the talk....you'd better.....
If you have the luxury of "passing" on a ten-point, more power to you. Here in southern Maryland, that is a big deer. Congratulation on the area you get to hunt if a ten-point doesn't meet your standards. I can only imagine hunting in a place like that.
Here in southern Maryland, if a ten point (of any age) walks underneath my stand, I'm going to take him, or at least try! <font color=green>How many vegetables had to die to make your stupid salad!</font id=green> |
RE: If you can talk the talk....you'd better.....
I agree, a lot of hunters want a big buck, but can't resist shooting the small ones. There is a price to pay for the big one. Are you willing to pass up dozens of bucks to get the chance at the right one? I know that I am.
Bowfanatic, I frequently carry a camera during the off season. It's kind of inconvenient to grab while holding a bow, but I'm sure you could do it. The real quiet ones are a bit expensive. You have to have a manual 35 mm without the motor advance. The good ones have a mirror lock feature. The mirror flipping up and down is what makes most of the noise. You could do what my brother does. He averages about 25-30 bucks/year in front of his stand and he mounts a video camera in the tree above him. He bought a bracket that holds the camera and has an arm that he can easily swing into the direction of the deer, without much movement on his part. He actually anticipates where his shot will be, moves the camera, and then videos himself shooting the deer. All this is done by himself. He just got this last year and his results so far have been pretty good. All you need to ad is a real good low-light video camera. |

get a digital camera, the prices have fallen big time over the last year and they are quiet. Some of the cheaper one may not take a photo that is good enough to frame???? but you will be able to show your "walkers" to your buddies and come home and post them for the board.

YEEEESSSSSSS!!! You da man! Way to walk the walk! If you can't run with the big dogs then stay on the porch.<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle> Last year was an especially hard year for me in passing up marginal bucks. It seemed like all I would see were bucks barely passing up or hovering around that 125 mark, give or take 5 inches. I've got 5 of those bucks already and really try to hold out for something better. I'm very excited about this year...all of those boys are one year older and if they stuck around and didn't get killed, they will be pushing the 140's hopefully, if not better. Ya just got to let 'em go and let 'em grow...hmmm...I think I've heard that somewhere before<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle> And I'll add one more thing, the amount of emotional trauma that I go through in passing up one of these kinds of bucks is grueling and emotionally exhausting. It's like the adrenaline pumping in my veins is going to cause me to explode and it takes a lot to NOT pull the trigger. But then..."to each his own"<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

CUDO's to you!!! I love to hear that some of us aren't all out just to fill tags. I mean that is ok and all but it seems that many guys post about everything is trophy, etc. However I doubt that filling tags is our true motive to love this sport. <hr height=1 noshade id=quote></BLOCKQUOTE id=quote></font id=quote><font face='Verdana, Arial, Helvetica' size=2 id=quote> I'm glad to hear that James Vee did what he feels in his opinion was a good move, but I don't agree with the generalization that you are making about filling tags or the ability to pass on such deer. I've been hunting for 12yrs (not very long time but still long enough) and I've never seen anything larger than a 6pt come within shot range. I do believe that every deer is a trophy that represents your dedication, skill, patients, and respect for the animal weather or not you can stuff it an hang it on a wall. In NJ we have to shoot a Doe in certain Zones before a Buck (You'll see my other post today that discusses the Doe I took yesterday) and it is definitely a "trophy" to me in a fugurative sense. I get the same thrill every time - I love to take Does as much as Bucks. I just don't think that anyone needs to belittle anothers efforts or feelings in an attempt to raise himself to a higher, more superior level. This is just my feeling and all of my harvests will still be trophies to me. "Measure twice, shoot once <img src=icon_smile_evil.gif border=0 align=middle> " |

RE: If you can talk the talk....you'd better.....
James, good job showing the patience to hold out for what you are after. I think a major point to this post is the following quote:
<BLOCKQUOTE id=quote<font size=1 face='Verdana, Arial, Helvetica' id=quote>quote:<hr height=1 noshade id=quote>Not quite what I'm looking for. I saw a beauty a few days ago. <hr height=1 noshade id=quote></BLOCKQUOTE id=quote></font id=quote><font face='Verdana, Arial, Helvetica' size=2 id=quote> You know there is a bigger buck walking around which allowed you to pass the 10 point with confidence you can do better. That is the key. I have seen most of the bucks on the property I primarily hunt and there are 2 "big boys" that will score in the mid to high 130's. There are maybe 2 or 3 other bucks that will score around the 120's. With that being said, if I get a crack at anything 120 or higher, I will be taking the shot. For some guys 130's may be too small because they have 4 bucks in the 140's on their property and 2 in the 150's. It's all relative to what you have to hunt and how well you know the deer on your property. James, good luck getting that beauty you're after. I hope to see some pics of him soon. Wolfen, you're my hero, you big dog.<img src=icon_smile_tongue.gif border=0 align=middle> |
RE: If you can talk the talk....you'd better.....
Thank you all for the encouragement to keep doing what I'm doing.
HuntingBry, I did see a huge deer a few nights before season. If any of you guys remember the 12 I shot last year that went high 140's, well the deer I saw the other night made that 12 look like a spike. He was probably one of the largest deer I have ever seen. I say probably because it was kind of shady, and he never really turned sideways for me to count points. Just the main frame and height was that impressive. Bowfanatic, I get that quite a bit. I'm only 20. That plays a huge part in it too I believe. A lot of the "hunters" around here wouldn't give me the time of day. I set up the video camera most of the time. Like Straghtarrow's friend, but I just set mine up in a different tree, and try to cover the entire ground that I'm hunting. It's the next morning....and I still feel good about passing him up. I'm sure that tonight when I sit tonight, and he brings in the monster I'm waiting for I'll be thinking the same thing. |
