RE: If you can talk the talk....you'd better.....
Wolfen68, you nailed it. The point of this post is not to belittle anyone on their harvest.
Actually, Shortdraw, congratulations on your harvest. That's a nice deer. The point was only those who talk big, but can't walk big. There is so many people that might say they pass up bucks all the time but really don't....or even people who might come in from a day from hunting and brag about how they saw six deer, when it was only three. It's just a post to remind people to put their money where their mouth is. I'm not trying to brag about seeing and passing up on a nice buck. Later this year, I might think differently....but probably not. I commend, or try to commend everyone on their harvests. To each his own trophy. I hunt because I love hunting, I love the challenge, I love the time alone and outdoors. (I'll see if I can get any pics of the buck that I passed up on here. It might be a few days though.) |

James Vee: For the record.. I didn't take your post as offensive or pointing. I took it as saying "OK, I say to let them walk... so today I had to let one walk". And you also said "it was hard to do".

Congrats on the buck shortdraw!
I also dont think ANYONE should feel inferior for shooting what they want. Ya'll know where I stand on this subject. I have a personal goal and thats why I chose to let em walk last year and I'm gonna do the same this year. I DONT want nor expect everyone to have the same goal as me. If everyone lets em walk , it's gonna make it alot easier for me to achieve my goal , and I dont want any help. If I let a spike or basket rack walk and my neighbor takes him , I'll give him a high five and help him drag it out. Was I seeing things wolfen68 , did you say "to each his own"? ![]() "Nocked, cocked & ready to rock" |
RE: If you can talk the talk....you'd better.....
One thing I hate is when guys will say they passed on X # of bucks, when in reality they never had them in range. They may have SEEN X # of bucks 50 yds away in heavy brush. Have any of you run into guys like that?
Some things are true whether you believe them or not. |
RE: If you can talk the talk....you'd better.....
Wimp, yes I do know guys like that. I imagine we all do. I don`t have the luxury of being able to pad the number of bucks I pass up, cause all my hunting buddies know I have at least one video camera running in the treestand with me. They want to see the footage!

Wimp yeah I do know what you're talking about. I've been around guys just like that. But I've also been around guys that we everything they say they were.
For instance I have a hunting two hunting buddies. And between them tow, they have 3 bucks over ranging from 160-190 and nothing below. One of them would shoot at good 10 point if he had the chance though. But the other, I thought he was full of it when he said it had to be at least a 160 class buck before he shot it. So I went along with him last year on one of his awesome hunting spots to watch him pass up a tall 8 point with my estimated 24" spread, adn it was really heavy. I was impressed. And then a week later he shoots his 2nd buck, an easy 170 class 12 point typical. We've seen some monsters on that area of the KS river-bttom, just wait one of these days he'll ask me to drag out a record. So there are guys like that, who dont shoot the ****. But a lot who also do; like you said. Visit My Hunting Page |
RE: If you can talk the talk....you'd better.....
One area I hunt is owned by a friend who is an animal scientist. He has a standing rule for hunting his land. Only one buck having 10 points or more is allowed to be killed every 4 years, and only when he authorizes it. Not one 10+ buck per hunter, just one 10+ buck only off his land. Four seasons ago, he put a ban on shooting 8-pointers until further notice after he discovered a lower population of big bucks on his land.
He says that the big bucks are what keeps the gene pool healthy and produces healthy and smart deer. That a low population of big bucks allows too many inferior bucks to breed, thus creating a population of inferior deer that can spiral out of control. It is his contention that the emphasis on hunting trophy bucks is counterproductive and is already having a negative affect in many areas, and will eventually result in a severe drop in the deer population in those areas due to weaker and dumber deer being born He allows us to shoot all the nasty racks we see, per legal quota. |

I don't doubt that his method of selection will produce some very nice racks, but to say the empahsis on trophy bucks is counterproductive, doesn't quite sound right to me. What's the alternative, to shooting everything (like is done in most places)? I would think that allowing 2.5 & 3.5 yr bucks to fight it out and then be shot at 4.5 and 5.5 years, would do a whole lot more for the gene pool, then allowing the spikes and 4 points to determine who's going to breed. It is my contention that there is a whole lot more mature dominant bucks and a much more favorable buck/doe ratio on land managed for trophies to be shot, then there are on land where every buck that moves gets shot. His method may be better, but that doesn't mean that trophy hunting is counterproductive. |
RE: If you can talk the talk....you'd better.....
Speaking of letting them fight it out....I sat last night, and saw the one I was waiting for.
I heard a stick break off to my right, I looked with the binoculars and the first thing I saw was this buck. I didn't get any chance at all to count points or anything, he was only thirty yards or so to my right but through thick brush. I carefully put away my binoculars...put my head down to hide my face, hooked up my release and waited.....and waited.....and waited. He never came out. I couldn't believe it. I waited for about ten minutes when I couldn't figure out what happened. I never heard him move. I scanned with the binoculars again...and nothing. A few minutes later I heard two bucks sparring back in the direction he had come from. I'd assume it was him and the eight I saw the other night. I couldn't believe it though, he was that close. Then must have turned around for that other buck. I got so excited when I saw him in the binoculars...walking right down the trail like he's supposed to...everything was perfect. Then nothing. Oh well, I'll be back out there tonight. |
RE: If you can talk the talk....you'd better.....
Shortdraw...you've been shooting does all summer? Where do you hunt? Do you get depredation or crop damage permits or something? You mentioned that your season opened on Saturday but that also you've been killing does all summer. Seems like if there was that many does there must be some nice mature bucks running around and if you have been sweating it out all summer killing does you think you might wait until things cool off a bit and the rut kicks in and you start to get much more buck activity and it becomes even more exciting. Besides if you would have waited and killed a bigger more mature buck, the THWACK you had a hard on for hearing would have been even louder.
