Hey, what's wrong with a 4pt???

Seriously, I don't give a rats butt what others think of how I hunt. If you want to let 1000 deer walk, more power too ya. I aint gonna do it. We have a 3pt rule here in AR that is very good in my opinion. I had quit shooting spikes and 4 pts anyway. If a basket six or eight and a doe was standing there offering the same shot, I would shoot the doe. But.....if the basket 6 or 8 were standing there alone I would shoot it just a well. I put in too much time and preperation for the little amount I get to hunt, somethings coming home with me and going in the freezer.

Shortmil, I like the way you think

Taz, while I agree some of the trophy hunters' remarks could be considered bashing I disagree that others are elitist just because they choose to shoot bigger bucks. You say:
<BLOCKQUOTE id=quotequote:
for the most part they just let the meat hunters know that thier standards are higher, a polite way of saying your standards are beneath mine.

I don't see it that way at all. I say I know what bucks are on my property and know which ones I would like to shoot. You may choose to shoot a smaller buck than I would shoot if we were hunting the same property. However, I wouldn't say that my standards are higher than yours as you imply, or that yours are beneath mine, but rather that they are just different. You have a choice to shoot whatever you want, just as I do. Don't be defensive because our choices are different, because it doesn't make me feel superior.

<BLOCKQUOTE id=quotequote:
Straightarrow I never said all trophy hunters are elitest,...

No you didn't. I guess I was reacting to the following statement. It seemed you were putting these guys down as elitists, and yet they were not acting "better" than anyone.

quote:
Yes I view you both as elitest, but not ones that look down on folks who are proud and happy with a 4 point.

_________

quote:
Straightarrow there are a number of people here who are elitest, but the majority of them do not knock meat hunters or the guy who is tickled pink with a 4 point. I have seen a few of them out and out bashing someones opinion or standards, for the most part they just let the meat hunters know that thier standards are higher, a polite way of saying your standards are beneath mine.

I have never seen any trophy hunters on this forum, say their standards were higher than others (though I'm sure a few have). I think most are like myself. Their standards are different, that's all. It may be that you are interpreting it differently from how it's being said.

I get the general impression that more people on these forums are looking down their noses towards trophy hunters, than the other way around. If a person is thrilled with shooting little bucks, that is okay by me. However, I hear a lot of my friends and hunting buddies talk about how they wish they could shoot a big one, but then shoot the first legal buck that walks by. I simply encourage them to let them walk, so they can experience the thrill of a taking a bigger buck, if that's what they really want. Trouble is, they have little patience and get too excited when that small buck gets in front of them. With enough encouragement, they can learn to pass so their odds of seeing the big one, will get larger.

Myself, I have taken a couple 3.5 yr deer but I too am still waiting to take my first mature buck. In fact, I've never even seen a mature buck while bowhunting. They are few and far between in this neck of the woods, so I put my goal at a big 2.5 yr buck or older.

Tazman: I never took any offense to what you were saying. Apology accepted.

Mizzou2002:
I'm hunting in Northwest Wi. We have 200 acres that we primarily hunt. We manage it as: if you're not going to mount it, dont' shoot it....and take a few does in the mean time. But I'm not even hunting on our property. It's just a vacant lot that I drive by on the way to our property. I saw deer in it every time, so I decided to watch it for about a week. I noiced that 8 (or 10 however you want to look at it), then a much larget deer on a different night. I knew there was some large deer, and for such a small area I figured my chances were pretty good. Seeing as how we can't bait in Wisconsin anymore, you've got to find other methods of finding deer. My method was to move to a smaller tract of land.

Here is a pic of a deer that I found last year. The DNR aged it at 3.5 yrs old.

There are definately some nice genetics around the area. It's just a matter of patience until you find the deer you are looking for. I spend a lot of time scouting. I've been out probably five days a week since the snow went looking for deer sign. I may seem a little crazy, but it's something I like to do.

I put in a lot of time and effort into taking the largest buck possible. I like to keep to myself about it though. I'm only 20 years old remember. I have more patience when it comes to hunting then most anyone I have ever met. And Since I am in Wi, that means we are only allowed to take two bucks. One with bow, and one with rifle. So when I decide to take a buck, it's going to have to be one large enough to mount. And that's what I'm waiting for. Maybe tonight will be the night!

there are more pictures of deer that we have taken in recent years at: http://.community.webshots.com/user/notorious_vee

RE: If you can talk the talk....you'd better.....

Straightarrow, exactly my point. I too think that the "Trophy Hunters" are the one always getting the heat or snubbed. I go it, b/c I said I think it is great to hear some guys actually think it is ok and do let bucks walk. I do think however some of it was my fault or taken the wrong way. I was simply stating if you aren't willing to wait, then chances are you won't get the wallhanger. If you are happy with your harvest "buck or Doe" than I am happy for you.

I know I have a bit of a luxury most of you don't have being in Saskatchewan, Canada where are mature deer heard is good. We don't have the size of deer heard or the liberal limits some you talk of. We can shoot in most zones 1 deer (either sex) a year. But we also don't have the number of hunters either, so the chance to connect on a mature buck is always their. I am lucky that I live in an area that has an opportunity to take a doe for the table with the bow or ML. Which I do, the rest of my season is chasing mature bucks!

Tazman, you agree with me?

Shortdraw, just out of curiousity...what do you do with all the deer you take? I can't imagine anyone eating that much venison. I'd be sick.
