i want to get into archery but i have no idea about anything. all ive ever shot is my grandpas old recurve bow. im looking to get a new compound bow. i was looking at a pse thunderbolt cf bow package. is this a good bow. i really dont have any reason to dislike or like it i was just looking and it caught my eye. do u recommend the extra price for carbon arrows. i really know close to nothing so any help on sights rests or really anything is appreciated. thanks

choice of gear,get help so you dont spend money on
the wrong equipment,make sure it fits you!

well you could hang around for a while and read on. You could also get your hands on bow hunting magazines and read the reviews in them. Libraries have some. Do a search on google and ask different questions. Keep getting as much info as you can before you spend a dime.

I shoot a hoyt protec, they are good bows with Gold tip pro shafts/thunderheads.

Just hang around and read on, everything is talked about sooner or later.

im sure that p.s.e. would be fine for you though, just get measured to see to it ya get the right fit. other advice, dont buy a plastic sight. get something durable. i personally wouldnot spend a fortune just starting out, enty level bows kill just as well as high dollar ones.
it is a lot of fun, get a bow and you wont regret it

A Protec sure is a nice bow. All the greatest people own Protecs, Just ask Nodog. Mine set me back $780 out the door. Do you have any idea how long your draw length is? I have one suggestion, if you are limited with $ (Which we all are) you are better off to buy a cheaper bow and spend more on the rest, arrows, sight... then the other way around. I would go to a proshop if you can, just remember they are there to sell you things, don't fall for gimmicks. I myself stay away from the proshops around here, never had any luck with them. Better than a proshop would be to buddy up with someone that knows what they are doing. That seems to be the most effective way to get into the game.

I hunt with one of the best in the country who has two problems. One, is an image thing. He didn't want to hunt with me while I was using my 20 yr. old Hoyt. Two, he doesn't like to owe anybody anything and he is trying to pay me back for carrying him around for 2 yrs. while he was a baby and I was his nine year older brother. Funny isn't it.

anyone out there shoot cabelas bows. either the pl1 or 1.5. if i got one of these bows i was looking at gettin nap pro 1000 dropaway rest and maybe the trophy ridge flatliner vertical pin sight. any input on either of these. also has anyone shot cabelas carbon arrows. any input on their broadheads either. also is their anyway to measure my drawlength with a tape measure. i might have some trouble finding a bow b/c im 6'7 .thanks alot guys i really appreciate the help

My brother is your height and shoots an older pse @ 30". They don't make that brand anymore. It's a sweet bow though. It is some kind of thunder cloud or storm or lightening name. Never can remember.

Dang, bud! You're a whole inch taller than I am! Yeah, I bet you're going to have problems finding a compound that will fit you because it's always been a raging pain for me. Unless you've got real short arms for your height?

To get a good idea what your draw length will be, measure your wingspan, fingertip to fingertip. Take that measurement, subtract 15 and divide that by 2. For instance, my wingspan is 82". 82 - 15 = 67. 67/2 = 33.5 .... I can get away with a 33" draw bow.

If you come up with a number much over 31, you won't find a bow at Cabelas or any other mail order house, I can practically guarantee that. Most only draw to 31" and only a rare one will go to 32". Same way in the pro shops. They won't stock any extra long draw bows, but they can special order one for you. Problem with that is, if the bow you order winds up not being comfortable for you or just doesn't shoot well for you, you're screwed! I've had my share of bad experiences and wasted a lot of money because of my size and draw length.

I've tried using an extra long string loop and mechanical release to shoot a 31" draw bow. I did pretty well with the bow, but it really sucked. The peep sight was so far away from my eye that I couldn't hardly use it. Another thing I've tried, with a high letoff bow, is drawing the bow and then bending my bow arm elbow in order to bring the bow and string to my anchor. That worked better, actually quite a bit better, but it still put too much strain on my shoulder and elbow joints. It's best to find a bow that actually has a draw length that fits you.

Only a few companies make extra long draw bows, and they only make one or two models that will do it. Look at Hoyt, Martin, Onieda and, maybe, Merlin.

Or, forget compounds altogether and buy a custom built recurve. I've already decided that I've bought my last compound.
