Crossbow

my neighbor has a Ten Roint Titan Crossbow that i have shot and i took my first bow season deer with this fall i was getting interested in bowhunting and was talking to him and he said he would possibly sell it to me because he has a compound bow that he would like to start shooting again. I he told me he would probably sell it to me for around $250 i was wonering if this would be a good deal for a used crossbow or if it wasn't the bow also has two extra yardage pins a sling and i think about six arrows with 3 broadheads

RE: Crossbow

I dont know about the price but i would defenitly go for a bow, since its a nicer experience shooting a fine tuned bow.
But thats just my oppinion.

Unless your shoulder is shot..Crossbows are for people who cant step up to the challenge of ARCHERY hunting!!![&o]

Congrates on the deer !
Sounds like a ok price .
I shoot both a bow and a crossbow .
Don't let the anti crossbow group get you down .

RE: Crossbow

I am another buckeye that hunts with both also. I think that price sounds fair if it is in good shape. They are a pretty good brand for the money.

RE: Crossbow

ok to all you anti-crossbowers than what kind of left handed bow can i get for $250 i am not made of money [&o] so if you have any ideas for a left handed bow at that price i would not mind checking it out i asked the about price of this particular crossbow not your opinion on all crossbow hunting

Lefty, I like your last post. Although I basically agree that archery shoudl be archery, I admire you for standing up to some who should never have posted in the first place. I figure, "Answer the guy's question or stay quiet".

OK, Ten Points are one of the best crossbows made. Probably them and X-Caliber being the top two. Most others can be considered............well, let's just say I don't even consider them. I work where I get to shoot some often.
The price sounds reasonable. What sighting system is on it? Is your neighbor going to be around to help with warranty service should you need it? And by the way, Ten Point is very very good with their warranty service.

I hope I've helped some. Any more specific questions I'd be happy to answer.

BG

thanks for backing me up [8D] i see these anti xbow hunters get mad at people who use crossbows all the time i am just taking what i can get or afford [8D]

the xbow has peep sight style sights with three pins with two of them sighted in one at 10 and another at 30 yards and yes my neighbor will be around for a while because they just moved like two years ago and he is only in his thirties so it is not like he is going to die on me [:o] as soon as he sells it to me so yes he could help with warranties

Also if i wanted to put a scope on it what would something like that cost and what would be a good scope:eek:

thanks for the help

here is my take on it..Weather you are archery hunting or god forbid crossbow hunting,If you cant afford to do it then dont do it. If your buying a crossbow because that is the only thing you can afford, are you then going to K-mart for your arrows and 7.50 broadheads..Do you understand what I am saying..I'm not bashing what you want to do.All i'm saying is if your going to do it thyen do the critters a favor and make sure and buy quality stuff..Good luck to you.

RE: Crossbow

Lefty, that's why I asked what sight was on it. I would highly recommend putting a scope base on it and a 3 dot Red Dot. I work in a store where we sell Ten Points. I can't pull it off the top of my head, but I'm almost certain that they make a scope base that bolts right on. It's basically a 7/8" Weaver base so will accept any Weaver style rings. And you don't have to buy an expensive Red Dot for it. If you can live with a single dot then you should be able to put a Simmons, Tasco, oir BSA on it for about $50 or less. The base will most likely cost $30 to $35. So ballpark it should be $75 to $100.

Then once mounted, all you do is sight it in for about 27 yards. This should give you decent shooting on anything out to 35 yards. And some will argue this but they aren't much good, or at least intended to be shot much more than 40 yards anyway, The bolts just drop like mortar shells after 35 yards.

Hope this helps ya some. If you're close to aGander Mountain store stop in. I work at the one in Harrisburg, Pa so I know they should be able to fit you up. Good luck.

No joke on the bolt drop ,
I've actually watched my 20" XX75 shafts drop 8-10" when going from 20 to 30 measured yards . They were tipped with 100 grain Thunderheads . The bolt struck within 1/2" of the first shot though , I was pretty proud of that . :)

Sounds like he can afford to do it and has already. I buy broad heads from a K-mart like store, Thunderheads, just picked up 6 for 18 bucks. Quality stuff is not always expensive but to some people the price of something is just another piece of the puzzel of who they are.

Crossbows are not as easy as you would think. Getting the shot of ins't bad but evey thing else (to me) is, and a mess as well. He also is asking about one of the top of the line, if not the best xbows.

I don't use a xbow but I would buy this one if only to turn around and sell it for more ( depends on the deal). The critters will be favored with this set up as long as the shooter does their job of knowing their equipment, what ever it may be.

It don't matter what you use as long as it works for you!!! As long as it's legal in your state also. You can find cheap bows in good condition at garage sales. In my state you can only use a X-bow durning firearm unless your disabled. For about 200.00 you can get set up with just about any used bow, just shop around.

I talked to my neighbor again today about his crossbow and would sell it to me for $200 so the price he gave me a week before he has dropped and he knows that he is getting ripped off i figured i know it shoots well so i think i will get it so to all you anti xbowers out there i am going to dissapoint you :D

oh well

BGfisher 02-12-2005 10:26 PM

RE: Crossbow

Hey Lefty, stay in touch. And if you ain't buying that thing then let me know and I will for when I'm too dilapidated to shoot my regular bow.

While I'm on here I'd like to add a few things. First let me say that I was once a stanch anti--- on this subject. i kinda still am, but not so much toward the individual. XBows are legal in Ohio so you are within the law. That should make things a done deal.
FOR ALL THE NAYSAYERS
I do know from observation that they are not the Godsend of the bowhunting world. The big advantage is that you do not have to draw when in the presence of the animal. But, the are heavy, cumbersome, and must still be raaised and aimed. They are pretty noisy, the cheaper ones have terrible triggers. And you ain't gittin but one shot at a time, so you better get the job done the first shot.

You tell him 1865, I think Double Creek sounds like a TRIPLE A-- HOLE. .. There is a lot of us disabled hunters out here who have just as much right here as anyone. He best not speak to soon , for the Good Lord may someday disable him to the point where he will have to use one if he wishes to continue BOW HUNTING .

RE: Crossbow

BG i had that one shot deal happen to me this year when i was hunting with the crossbow with a decent 6 pointer that came in from the opposite way it was soppossed to and i missed him and couldn't get a second shot like these anti-bowers with their string silencers that do get that second shot

elkcrazedfrk-- i do have money to mantain it its just getting started i could put some 50 dollar broadheads on it if i wanted to it is just that i don't want to spend 500 dollars on a left handed bow which i don't know how itsots when i can get a abidextrous crossbow for 200 and know it will shoot well and kill a deer i mean put a serious wuupin on a deer because the deer i shot this year ran about 50 yards and i put about a hole the size of a baseball in its side with mechanicals so i don't think the deer had to suffer to long

Seems the only lip is yours and its YOU who's gotten it for posting biased, ignorant statements. Isn't that ironic ? The old P&Y "hate the crossbows" pledge of yesteryear is gone. Guys shooting crossbows work just as hard as you do, and they still have to get within 20 yards of the deer. the ONLY thing that changes is the moment of the shot, which is in itsself not easy because of the bulk, the weight, the noise etc etc

TeeJay 02-14-2005 08:50 AM

RE: Crossbow

Isee both sides of the crossbow arguement. I have no prob with someone hunting with one as long as they used to be an archer. My problem is up here now you are having alot of middle aged men that are going to the doc getting the dissability permit going out and buying a Xbow and think that they are carrying their 30.06. Never been in the woods with a broadhead. I know of 6 deer that were killed last year with xbow darts in them most of the bolts were in the hind quarters(from the rear i might add). So for a former archer with a lagite injury no prob have at it man!!!! To the 50 yr old faker that thinks he can shoot a running deer in the brush at 50 yds no stick to your guns man!!!!

datamax 02-14-2005 09:39 AM

RE: Crossbow

TeeJay I think the bow you use makes you a bowhunter wannabe

how do you like that ?

Please explain datamax!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

kevin1 02-14-2005 10:14 AM

RE: Crossbow

Tee Jay ,
Datamax is a trad shooter and he's baiting you .

Every discipline has it's share of slobs , including crossbows . If you see a slob wounding deer , regardless of what's in his hands , report him .

TeeJay 02-14-2005 10:21 AM

RE: Crossbow

I agree kevin but i still dont quite understand the wannabee coment and still waiting for an explanation!!!!

datamax 02-14-2005 10:49 AM

RE: Crossbow

TeeJay you seem to think that someone buying a crossbow and hunting archery season for the first time isn't really true bowhunting. Former archer ? You don't know the two sides do you, because you've never been on each side, have you ?

I could easily say to you that if you shoot a compound after having shot a recurve for year I can see where you're a bowhunter. But if you just went out and bought a compound, then you're a faker than thinks he can shoot deer running through the woods at 50 yards.

See how easy that is ?

TeeJay 02-14-2005 12:48 PM

RE: Crossbow

Datamax, first of all i have hunted with a recurve!!! Still use one for bowfishing!!!!! Second of all im talking about the poeple that rush out and buy a xbow and go out hunting with it because they found a loophole, For example one individle i know of has a xbow permit but is a self employed carpenter. Yes i said carpenter, you kno the poeple that swing hammers and throw lumber around(or shingles we all know what a bale of them weigh) I am not talking down on anyone for doing it I was giving a for example. I have known of this man my whole life and he is not the bowhunting type alright. My example the 20 yr old kid that goes to the mall with his grandmas carthat has handicap plates on it he parks in the handicap parking is it legal yes is it right no. If you are handicaped and know your limitations go ahead, dont do it because you found a loophole in the law!!!!

datamax 02-14-2005 01:10 PM

RE: Crossbow

The "loophole" is being phased out as States more and more legalize them in regular archery season. If you shot a recurve good for you, did you make it yourself ? If not, then you're a wannabe jumping on the archery bandwagon and capitalizing on my hunting season.

See ?

TeeJay 02-14-2005 01:16 PM

RE: Crossbow

Still a loophole here!!!! And no i guess i am a wannabee no i did not make my recurve. Just a few more questions for ya pal. Did you make your broadheads, quiver, string, stand, knife, etc? So please give it up man. If you did, You win I throw the towl in. O Great One!!!

datamax 02-14-2005 03:47 PM

RE: Crossbow

TeeJay - see how easy it is to make you look like the one capitalizing on archery season after you weant through the trouble to do it to others ?

Guys who get handicap permits when they're really able to shoot compounds is not the intent of that law for sure, but it was known when it was passed that people would do it. Crossbow, longbow, recurve, compounds ............ does it really matter ? No, it doesn't, we're all bowhunters, and your comments were aimed at bowhunters and based on assumptions that were far from the normal and rare in occurence.

Oh, and you can rise from your knees, I'm not a Great One, just a guy that sees things in a larger scale than most guys and thinks for himself ;)

Lefty, I don't know much about crossbows so I can't give you any help there and frankly I don't care what tool you use when hunting as along as yu use it safely and have a good time. That is what hunting is about.

You asked about lefthand bows for $250. They're out there you just need to keep you eyes open. My brother and I both shoot lefthanded and he just bought a used 2004 Mathews Q2 w/ all the attachments for $275 at the PA sportsmen show. My wife has a standing order to watch out for LH bows at yard sales. So far I have 6 compunds and 5 recurves. One was a Black Widow for $35 :D.

well i am not an xbow man myself but good luck to you this season.

just a question though: why would the bolts drop like that? they shoot faster then the fastest compounds i would think they could hold a good flight to atleast 50 yards? is it something to do with the desing of the bolts?
