Try to find where the BUCKS bed (I'm assuming your after a buck). Try to find travel route from the bedding area to the feeding areas. Try to approach your stand without bumping deer. When you position your stand be aware of the prevailing wind direction and position your stand so the deer will not be able to scent you on the trail. your stand should be position around 15-20 yards from the trail. Make sure your stand has able cover for you.
If you just position your stand on heavy used trails, chances are that you will see a lot of does. Bucks and does generally do not use the same trail except when the bucks are in rut. Then most of the patterning goes out the window.

Good advise Bob. Deer movements change throughout the time of year it is. I have a total of 8 stands scattered around the woods here. 4 are still out there cause I can't get to them because of the snow. If I could I would have a dozen more, just because of wind direction or some stands are hot in the morning or maybe some may be hot in the evening.
When setting up a stand try to position the stand where you anticipate a shot (if thats possible). I shoot a bow left handed and a gun hunt right, so if I gun hunt, I usually have to re- position my stand. Sometimes its a good ideal to get as high as you feel comfortable with so your scent is up and out. Watch out if you get too high because the trees canopy will limit your shots also. The most important thing is always be aware where you are and suggest using a safety belt. I heard 1 out of 3 hunters in a life time will fall from a tree.
There is no such tree that produces continually, thats why I am moveing around so I don't burn any one stand out. Good Luck, Bobby

I live in WV and here it is steep,I put mine in a lowgap or on a point of a ridge. I also hunt mass, where there is white oak or grass when acorns don't hit. In the rut I find the does and put my stand close to a food sorce or a lowgap.

Well I will tell you what I do.What I have found out that if you put it in a cluster of trees, or a tree with big limbs. That the deer don't seem to pick you up, as to a tree with out any cover.
