What draw weight do you shoot?
Just doing some research before buying a bow here. What draw weight do you shoot for deer size game and heavy (moose) game?

RE: What draw weight do you shoot?
Around 60 lbs for me. I can draw 70 while I'm practicing, but I discovered that after sitting in a tree for hours at a time I can't draw that much to hunt with. I shoot closer to 45 or 50 for non hunting type stuff.

RE: What draw weight do you shoot?
I shoot around 65 give or take a few pounds. I use to be higher but found out the hard way that maybe I shouldn't hunt up that high. With that said, you want to make sure you can point your arm with the sights on the deer and smoothly draw back the bow without any other movement. If you have to point your bow north and draw it back and then put your sight on the deer your over bowed.
This isn't what happened to me but think about this. If the deer is 15 yrds from you, you want the least movement possible. Anymore offers that deer the chance to spot you and bolt. That's only with one deer now imagine 6 underneath you and the big boy shows up. Your not getting a shot in that situation. Good luck! |
RE: What draw weight do you shoot?
I like to shoot at around 70# when hunting. On my Martin Fury I could crank it to 83 pounds and I hunted between 75-78#. Back in 2000 the limbs broke, they were replaced for free but for some reason I can only crank my bow up to 68 pounds now.[:@]

RE: What draw weight do you shoot?
63lbs year 'round. I got Hoyt Powertec hunting bow but my Powertec 2 target bow is set the same.
|
RE: What draw weight do you shoot?
I can easily pull my 70# hoyt TRazer tech, sitting down. All deer I have taken sitting.
|
RE: What draw weight do you shoot?
Between 60-63...like others, try drawing a bow with heavy jacket and other layers when temps are around 15-30F.
Cold muscles=girly man strength ;) |
RE: What draw weight do you shoot?
My Browning Vanguard LX is set at 65# and it works for me.
|
RE: What draw weight do you shoot?
70# for me.
|
RE: What draw weight do you shoot?
I will also add every time you shoot, think about that deer that will be in your crosshairs and while sitting on the stand think about how you will pull back and shoot the deer you want. How will you react to the situtation. Direction, shooting lanes and etc.

RE: What draw weight do you shoot?
58# hunting & 3-D
|
RE: What draw weight do you shoot?
I shoot 68# with my Martin but when its real cold I use a Bear compound set to roughly the same weight but with much softer cams as its easier to draw. Had a evening earlier this year that I couldnt draw that Martin if my life depended on it. [:'(] Tried like hell but just couldnt do it.

RE: What draw weight do you shoot?
68#'s for me.

RE: What draw weight do you shoot?
70 here
|
RE: What draw weight do you shoot?
55#
|
RE: What draw weight do you shoot?
im pulling about 60 pounds. not any lower than 58 for sure. this is for deer.
|
RE: What draw weight do you shoot?
70# Here
|
RE: What draw weight do you shoot?
Terry I'm shooting at 60#'s and if I'm correct the Grizzly was a 55 to 70 lbs which would cover the span that your looking for . If your not feeling strong when you start shooting your bow you can start off low and as hunting season get's closer you can crank that baby up to the max .

RE: What draw weight do you shoot?
hmm i'm only shooting 55# for whitetail, everyone else seems to be above 60 most above 65. Is this heavy enough?
|

ORIGINAL: QTompkins2005 hmm i'm only shooting 55# for whitetail, everyone else seems to be above 60 most above 65. Is this heavy enough? Edit: oops, forgot to reply to the original post. I'm shooting my Liberty at 71# year round |
RE: What draw weight do you shoot?
64 lbs. here. QT- 50 pounds will effectively kill any animal in North America, so you should be fine.
:) |
RE: What draw weight do you shoot?
shootin 70lbs for whitetails.
|
RE: What draw weight do you shoot?
QTompkin's 55# will definetly do the job ,just remember the range you shoot should be kept within the 30yrd marker. The longer you shoot the less effective your 55# is going to be.

RE: What draw weight do you shoot?
I hunt at 73 lbs, 65% let off. This 03 patriot dually shoots faster at 73 than my 01 hoyt hypertech, redline cam, shot at 80 lbs, 80% let off. I practice with a duplicate bow at 63, 75% of the time.
|
RE: What draw weight do you shoot?
I shoot around 55lb I love how smooth it is, and trust this is enough to kill any North American game and most African game with the properly placed arrow. Arrow placement is everthing so practice practice practice.
|
RE: What draw weight do you shoot?
I cranked my Patriot all the way to 72#. I as long as it's comfortable enough I'll keep it there. I shot a management doe late season and I get so geeked when I see deer felt like 40#. But I suppose as I age I may feel different. But whatever's comfortable for you sitting, kneeling, and maybe aqward positions is what you should go with. Any bow today will be sufficient at minimal weight laws. Shot placement is EVERYTHING. However the more you can mangage obviously the more effective it will be.
|
RE: What draw weight do you shoot?
65lbs in off season and 60 during season
|
RE: What draw weight do you shoot?
60 pounds all the time for me.
|
RE: What draw weight do you shoot?
63#
|
RE: What draw weight do you shoot?
50-60 is plenty for deer. Personally I like to have ample KE so I shoot heavier arrows and am drawing 74lbs.
|
RE: What draw weight do you shoot?
63# on my old mathews featherlight
|
RE: What draw weight do you shoot?
Up until this year 70#s. I dropped to 60#s this year. Took 1 Buffalo, 1 Buck, 1 Doe, 1 Wild Hog-all pass throughs.
I like a bow I can pull with no problems sitting down-just point-pull, shoot. |
