Corn or apples

We have fields planted in just every imaginable deer attracting crop with exception of corn. Last year the acorn crop was heavy and the deer didn't come out until they were done eating them all.

It depends on where you are!
Here in Ohio I can go to public land that is nothing but forest with no cash crops within 5 miles and 10 miles away(as the crow flies) nothing but cash crops.

There are deer in both places but I can't place any similarities based on the fact that they (the deer) use completely different food sources year round!

Me, I try to hunt where the game is!

I would have to say acorns for the area I hunt.

As far as staple foods, White Oak acorns, food plots and honeysuckle. I read a study once that stated on average during the winter months in the South, honeysuckle was approximately 40% of a deer's diet. From what I have observed, I would agree with this study. I'm sure it would depend on other available food sources, but that is a significant amount.

As far as seasonal (short time or very limited supply) food and depending on the area: persimmons, polk berries, honey locust bean pods, sugar maple leaves, mushrooms, kudzu, old orchards or fruit trees (apple, pears, plums) and crops before and shortly after harvest.

In the area I mostly hunt, honeysuckle would have to be at the top of the list as the most consistent, most used food source.

Opening weekend in WI...you'd better be near the oak trees.

In my part of Tennessee, the persimmons are tops in early bow season, then the acorns. However, it's so dry around here for this fall, I know a certain little pond that's the only water source for a few miles so I imagine I'll be between it and the bedding areas.

in pa where I hunt every year its crab appels then white oak accorns
if your going to plant they love beans, eat um as soon as they come up

In my part of Florida,Ocala and Green swamp,the stapel foods are palmeto berries and acorns,when they're around.Through the spring and summer it's mostly new growth on the assorted bushes and grasses
