Man survives after being shot with arrow
November 16, 2004
MARSHFIELD, Wis. --An arrow smashed through a car window and hit a hunter in the neck in the woods of northern Wisconsin, the hunter's family said.
Bill Rusch, 50, was recovering in fair condition at St. Joseph Hospital on Tuesday -- four days after the bizarre shooting mishap caused an arrow to penetrate about 2 inches into his neck, threatening his spinal cord, said his daughter, Jenny Gilbert.
Tim Lawhern, hunter education administrator for the state Department of Natural Resources, said the errant arrow came from the bow of another hunter, Rusch's companion.
Gilbert said the bow's release malfunctioned as the hunter walked from the woods to get into the car. The arrow flew through the window on the driver's side, missing the driver before striking Rusch.
Rusch was breathing on his own Tuesday and could move his legs and arms, Gilbert said. His neck remained in a brace.
Gilbert said her father kept his sense of humor during the ordeal, joking the arrow was a cheap one, "not the kind he sells," Gilbert said.
Talk about SAFETY.... WOW, thats all I can Say...

It's not their fault the guy likes to use a x-bow.... if he'da had a compound that wouldn'ta happened...
No, but really that is pretty crazy, and in fact is one reason why I have not interest in x-bows; unlike my cousins, they walk around with it cocked back until we get to the treestand. (I wonder why they can't just wait until they get to their stand?)

Some people just aren't very smart.
This seaon about 10miles from my home a hunter was shot with a high powered rifle on his own property by a friend who thought he was a deer moving through the bush's the 76 yr old man died from his wound and a 60 yr old has been charged in his death ,I'm not sure what he was charged with but he was charged.

that was the orignal thread on the dearhunting message board... turns out he had one of those things that locks your bow in the full draw position until your ready to fire. (cant think of what its called)
the same guy also posted an update and said that the guy was comming back to the truck and fiddling with the bow in the full draw postition and didnt know his buddy was sitting in the truck .... anyway the bow went off and went through the window of the truck...

It's people like these that give hunters a bad name. I have to wonder what is going through their minds. "I didn't know my buddy was in the truck". What does that mean, it's acceptable to put a bolt through a vehicle's window? It's absolutely mind-boggling!

Maybe it's me but wouldn't it make scense to take the bolt out of the cross bow (if that's what it was fired from) before getting out of the tree or walking out of the woods.
IMO there are too many "accidents" which clearly could and should be avoided. I'm glad to see Mr. Rusch had a good scense of humor about the situation and is still breathing. I'm sure the later has someting to do with that (possiably blood loss too.)
