(UPDATE) Where was this deer Hit..?? (UPDATE)
Ok.. Arrow went easily passthrough.. COVERED in RED BLOOD.. LOTS ... Short Hair(not white) and blood on ground where impacted occured and no flesh and no guts on the arrows or putred smell. Deer took off running and ran a ways and then stopped and the walked away.. GREAT Blood for first 30 yrds, started petering out and eventually two drops and then one and Then NOTHING...NO MORE BLOOD...
Any guesses where the deer was hit... DEER CANT BE FOUND... what does a arrow look like after being shot through the intestines? not the stomach.. |
RE: Where was this deer Hit..??
You didn't see they arrow hit the deer? What was the color of the blood, dark or bright red? Don't know if the hit was high, low, back or front so hard to say. Could be a kidney shot, liver just dont know based on info given. I would guess some type of a meat hit (non-vital) and the deer should survive, again just a guess. When you make a good shot you actually see the arrow and where it hits the deer. If you stay on your shot and not look up too early to see the hit you should be able to see where the arrow impacts the deer.

RE: Where was this deer Hit..??
It was pretty dark already, couldnt see the arrow hit.. I'm assuming it hit the chest.. I heard the arrow hit the deer, then I heard it hit the ground behind him.. I'm assuming it was the ground behind him, cuz it was sticking in the ground about 5 inches.. THe blood wasn't really bright, but it was really dark either..
My arrow seemed to have a few grainy like sand things on the feathers... but no stench |
RE: Where was this deer Hit..??
There is really no need to jump on this guy like that. He made a mistake I would be willing to bet all of us have. And if you think you havent then you are an idiot. He came on asking for some help and if you can't give him any then don't reply. You don't have to go getting all nasty about it. Personally in my opinion there is way to much of that on this board. Someone makes a post and people jump all over them. Some of it is probably deserved but most is not. I hear alot about not giving the anti's any ammo, well jumping all over on one another all the dang time is as good of ammo as any is it not? I also would be willing to bet that there are alot of people on here who criticize others but do the exact same stuff and just won't admit it so they look respectable and are just putting on a show. I am not intending this to be an attack on anyone, but we don't really need to jump on everyone, like coyotes on roadkill, whenever they are asking for some help after a mistake. That is just my two cents.

RE: Where was this deer Hit..??
How was the deer standing wwhen you shot it? If he was quatering away IMO I think you may have hit hit a bit far back and caught something behind the diaphram and possibly caught a liver or kidney as the arrow passed through. That wouls explain the "grainey" stuff on the shaft and the medimum red blood. It's aweful hard to tell though by what you've presented for info.
IMO the hit sounds lethal although you'll have a very difficult tracking job. If the deer wasn't pushed I'm willing to bet he's withing 200 yards of where you hit him. It may require that you get down on all fours and follow tracks. I've done it and it sucks but it may be the only way to track your animal down. Hopefully you'll persevere and locate you animal. Good luck. Also any additional info would be appreciated. |
RE: Where was this deer Hit..??
Broadside to slightly Quarting To
|
RE: Where was this deer Hit..??
30 mns after sunset here, It was still legal shooting hours
|
RE: Where was this deer Hit..??
to slightly Quarting To It's always possible that you hit the dredded void that I don't believe in:eek: |
RE: Where was this deer Hit..??
I don't see impact most of the time. Those arrows are going pretty darn fast. Twice this year already I didn't see where the hit was. One was at almost exactly 2pm, the other I had about an hour of legal shooting. Both had very little (next to no) blood. Both were recovered with no problems and both were pretty good hits.
Maybe I'm just blind. |
RE: Where was this deer Hit..??
One word......Luminock!....;)
|
RE: Where was this deer Hit..??
There are times in broad daylight that I have not seen the arrow impact and I have dipped arrows. Of course that is not the norm but it does happen.
As far as to dark to shoot goes, for me at least, it becomes a matter of, is it to dark to be able to see details on the animal? So with that in mind a twenty yard shot might be to far but a ten yard shot could be acceptable at the same time of day (legal shooting hours). It all depends on the circumstances at the time. Something that is often over looked are the subtle angles. Those are the ones where the animal looks broadside but in reality is not. There are a number of deer that I have shot that appeared to me to be perfectly broadside. Upon recovery, some will show that they were obviously not broadside. The interesting thing about this is, almost never will the wound channel show a quartering away shot when this allusion happens. In low light the percentage of making a misjudgement on the angle of the animal and the angle of the entry and exit of the arrow climbs dramatically. Mathewsboy, chances are you hit to far back. From your description, at best you got one lung. I doubt you got kidneys, because contrary to what a lot of people believe, kidneys usually bleed pretty good (and why wouldn't they, they have a direct vein to them to help cleanse the blood). You probably got liver and intestines. A shot like this doesn't always show stomach or fecal matter on the arrow. In fact I have witnessed where this has happened and you couldn't smell it on the arrow. Dark blood is the norm. Early good blood is also not unusual. However in most cases it is shut off by fat and the insides of the animal plugging up the hole. I have seen cases where eight or ten inches of "innards" are sticking out of the exit wounds upon recovering. My guess is this deer will succumb to septic shock. As has been disgust over and over, many times the deer will bed within two hundred yards if not pushed. However, on more than one occasion I have seen an animal that has been hit in this manner, not pressured, still travel a half mile before he beds. Nothing is set in stone in this game. Many believe they go to water because of the fever associated with the wound. That would seemly makes sense if you think about it logically. However I have seen just the opposite in many cases like this, by at least a two to one margin. Crazy I know, nevertheless that is what I have honestly experienced in well over 100 blood trailing experiences. Good luck, I hope you find him. |
RE: Where was this deer Hit..??
ill be honest and if i had to guess i would say behind the shoulder but high, i did that on a doe last year, found her a long ways away the nest day alot of blood for the first 50 yrds then A little to none, just red blood not dark not pink, found her and it was behind the shoulder and 2-3 inches under the spine
|
RE: Where was this deer Hit..??
Sometimes I can't see my arrow hit in broad daylight...... |
RE: Where was this deer Hit..??
Wow, I would have thought you would have been able to see your arrows pretty good......almost like they were in............. s l o w m o t i o n You must be mistaken me for one of those Botek guys:D;) |
RE: Where was this deer Hit..??
I'm ruling out STomach. and MEat hit.. SO i guess I could rule out Above the spine, because of how much blood was on the arrow..It looked like someone dropped it in the a bucket of blood and pulled it out and stuck it in the ground.. I grabbed it and my hand was COVERED in blood... Blood started about 5-10 yrds after hit. Lots of Blood then the farther I tracked the less it became then after about 75 yrds it stopped completely..
|
RE: Where was this deer Hit..??
A little tip or trick i use when tracking a deer use the positon of the blood drops to guide your shot placement. Look at the tracks of the deer, how far back is the blood from the front leg etc. Also look up a ways to the brush in the area (if there is any) how high up is the blood sprayed on the brush or grass. Study the tracks of the animal is it favoring a leg etc? When u find blood great but you also have to think about where abouts am i usually finding this blood? Through this process you should be able to figure out where the deer is hit.
|
RE: Where was this deer Hit..??
Someone else asked, but I didn't see an answer. Mathewsboy, how long did you wait till you started to track him? This is important. If he was quarting towards you, you may of tagged one lung and went out through the liver. He could live for an hour or so. I just had a mature doe do this last week. Did you happen to find a bed with blood in it? The grainy stuff you described on your feathers will come from liver blood. Liver blood will sometimes "splat" onto the leaves, almost like a small paintball splatter. Liver will have a mild odor to it also.
Like I said, the real key here is how long you waited to track him. I've jumped them out of beds an hour or so after hitting them, backed off, then found them pretty close to where I jumped them a few hours later. If you nicked the intestine on the way out, you may of lost the blood because stomach/intestine matter is clogging the exit hole. You may of got just enough intestine to do this, but not enough to show up on the arrow, or wipe the liver blood off. Was there meat on the arrow with the blood? |
RE: Where was this deer Hit..??
Well FIRST of ALL,, Obviously I COULD SEE THE DEER, or i wouldnt have shot.. It was a BIG 8 , the one I've been after.. So, don't worry, if you were walking , I WOULDNT SHOOT YOU.
Now, I waited over a 1 1/2 before I went to look for blood. When I couldnt find anymore blood, i made some circles and decided to go back in the morning.. It was dead Calm that night and I never head a Deer jump and run.. So I dont know.. No beds with blood... No meet at all on the arrow, and no tallow |
RE: Where was this deer Hit..??
Also, Do you think he'd cross a 4 lane Highway? The 40 He went towards butts up to a HIghway that runs east and west and a Creek that runs North and South..
|
RE: Where was this deer Hit..??
You can hit high in boiler room and get little blood trail. Don't give up so easy. I see too many people conclude there is no blood trail too quickly if it is not an easy one.
I don't know where you hit the deer, but your description of deer, arrow, and blood trail is almost identical to a deer I shot once upon a time. Only difference is I saw my arrow hit, and thought I was too high and too far back from where I intended. I waited four hours before tracking and due to high hit, was only finding pin head size to maybe the size of grain of rice blood drops every 5 to 10 yards. It was hard to not get discouraged and want to quit and start grid search, but I stayed with it and 2 hours later I found deer about 125 yards from impact with a double lung shot that was stiff as a board due to a quick expiration. As mentioned many times before on this board, get down on your hands and knees if you are not finding blood easily. |
RE: Where was this deer Hit..??
I know i'm not alone when i say this post upsets me. Not sure where your arrow hit but i would hope you would know better then me. Taking a shot in low light is difficult and sometimes a mistake. Other then avoiding doing this again try having white feathers, or vanes as it is much easier to see in low light as it impacts.
|
RE: Where was this deer Hit..??
Hang in there Mathewsboy! There is always someone thats going to give his unwanted advice[:'(] And unnecesary comments![:'(] Buy what you have sead it is most likely was a good hit. But i am thinking maby a gut or intestines is pluging the hole on the other side where the arrow came out? I have had that happen a few times in the past. First the blood comes out fast, Then all of a sudden it just stops? There most likely is more blood it`s just staying on the inside i doubt the deer ran very far, Try looking around water and thickets near buy. Good luck!

RE: Where was this deer Hit..??
Did anyone who jumped on his case bother to first ask all the details? I don't think so. Like someone else said, He said it was getting dark, he said he didn't see the shot, and it was during legal shooting hours. Back up.
Ask a few questions at least to found out all the details before you cinch the noose around his neck. I don't post much but I'm tired of just that. People jumping all over someones case without asking for more details to make sure they know what they are b****in' about. Hey, You said the arrow stuck in the ground about 5 inches? How hard is the ground. Its not too bad here but with a pass through on a doe this year that went only about 3 inches in. If that. I also notice that when I take a deer under 20 yards at about 20 feet in the tree my arrow almost always sticks nearly straight up outta the dirt. The arrow comes out and goes straight down. Anyone else have an end result like that? How was your arrow in the dirt...any nicks at all on the broadheads???? I've seen a deer hit in the lower front quarters that left an arrow covered in blood and very little blood trail. I had a buddy bowhunting about 125 yards from me that shot the doe and it ran my way and stopped rather close. I figured it to be a missed shot and took the doe. We could find almost no blood trail at all and the arrow was covered in blood where it went through. Good luck dude... |
RE: Where was this deer Hit..??
I would be willing to say you gut shot him becuase his actions are typical of a gut shot deer they usually take off running when shot and stop then start walking. I would look around the thickest cover and also the water sources the acid from his guts will start burning his insides and he will be looking for something to cool it. And dont jump on this guy he prolly got excited when a deer comes in you forget what time it is he didnt say it was dark he said it was getting dark.

RE: Where was this deer Hit..??
Mathewsboy,
Don't listen to the negative remarks. We have all screwed up a time or two, just not all have admitted it. Sounds to me you may have hit back in the liver and gut area. I had this happen to me some time back and lost the blood trail completely after jumping the buck twice. I waited for 2 hours before going after him because of the blood on the arrow and the taint of gut. We ended up letting him lay over night and went out in the morning with 6 guys and combed the woods in the area the last blood was found and beyond. We ended up finding him in the thickest s%#t you could find curled up in a bed. If my cousin would not have walked right into him he probably would not have seen him. Get some friends together and go get him. Again don't let what people say bother you, we have all done our share of oops's and most of us learn from it. Good luck in your search. Wish I lived a little closer, I would give you a hand. |
RE: Where was this deer Hit..??
With the speed of today's bows, it can be very difficult to see arrow impact. I try to alleviate it by using bright knocks and fletching, but sometimes I still don't see my arrow fly. That being said, let's get down to your dilema with your buck.
I think if the deer was slightly quartering to you, you may have caught the near side lung, and went through liver upon exit and may have caught the gut or clipped the esophogus on the way out. If that happens to be the case, I would for sure look around the crick you mentioned in one of your posts, as he'll be looking for water. I would look by the crick anyway if it's the nearest water source to where he was shot. I would also look for vultures, and or crows that may lead you to your deer. GOOD LUCK, and I hope you find him. |
(UPDATE) Where was this deer Hit..?? (UPDATE)
Well First of all, let me THANK the guys that stood behind me and didnt rag on me for taking what i guess some called a marginal to bad shot.. It was Broadside, SLIGHTLY quartering to me, i could still see my pin as bright as day, WITHOUT a LIGHT, i could see the deer, I had WHITE FEATHERS, a SHARP 100 gr Muzzy tipped arrow and it was about an 18 yrd shot.. I wont take that shot next time.. (HAHA)
Well, I FOUND HIM.. He's a 9 pointer, 18 inch inside spread and GOOD mass.. I shot him SUnday night and looked for the arrow after about 15 mins.. I found the arrow FULL of blood.. I left and came back alomost two hours later with two buddies. WE found GREAT BLOOD then it petered out. I told them, lets get out of here until tomorrow morning. I took a day off of work and was out looking just after first light. I looked for more blood but couldnt find any.. I looked at his line of travel and decided if this was a fatal shot, i thot he would keep going the way he was going, straight into the THICK SWAMP. I followed deer trails and easy paths through thick poop and looked in everything i could think of. NO DEER.. I looked for 3 hours straight. I left for the day and went home and thot about the shot and the arrow.. I kept telling myself. THIS DEER IS DOWN.. I couldnt get over the amount of blood on the arrow.. I came on here and posted the post that i did. THanks to some great people, i went back with added optimism and took my dad with me. I told him where i thought the deer had traveled and he went one way and I went the other. I followed the edge of a highway all the way down to where a creek crosses it. I then followed the creek edge, looking all over. I walked over a little knoll about 10 yrds from the creek, and there he LAY, DEAD.. He's my widest buck ever at 18". For a Gogebic County Buck, that is pretty DARN good.. After I found the buck and did my dance of Joy, I hung my Hat on his RACK and went back to meet my dad.. He never showed.. I started getting worried, he is 74 yrs old and thought maybe he was hurt. I started back into the swamp and finally heard him yell.. He FOUND MY BUCK TOO.. He was waiting for me there..(lol) He told me , "thats the first time I ever seen a Buck with an ADIDAS hat on his Rack!!" What a Drag that was..1/2 mile from where I Shot him. But i wouldnt trade it for anything.. Persistance and YOU GUYS made this hunt a SUCCESFULL ONE.. Mikey S was dead on the nuts along with a couple other guys too... THANKS.. I owe you one.. Thanks AGAIN.. Mathewsboy..:D |
