As a rule I try to keep my shots w/i 30 yds. I'm confident out to 50 but so much can go wrong.
We're talking whitetail with a compound.

This topic strikes a nerv with me anyways The best and worst thing happen to me on this subject. Back in the early 80`s when i was still greenhorn bowhunter I had a 115 class 8pt come by me at a range of 42yrds, Standing broadside, Although i practiced in the back yard at ranges futher than that. I never really expected to take a shot that far on a live animale. But i did! I aimed just over the deers back and let the arrow fly? With a loud "smack" I thought i had missed ? But when i got down and went to retrieve my arrow and thinking that i must have hit a tree. When i got to the spot to where the deer was standing there was blood every where!! I did get my deer. but the trouth be known I got to thinking that i could do that every time! Bad thought [:'(] As soon as i had another chance at a deer i started taking longer shots and ending up with ether wounded animale`s or complet miss`s altogether. It did`t take long and I started sticking to what we call our effective range. i now will not take a shot over 30 yrds. And i have become a much more effective bowhunter for it! There is Way to much that can go wrong on long distance shots FOR ME!
