I remember reading somewhere a while back that Coleman lanterns are real good for tracking deer at night.

Does anyone have any experience with using one of these? If so, let me know.

I just went out and bought one and hope to get to try it out but I am curious as to anyone's experience with them.

I love buying new "toys"

They are good, but make sure you fashion some sort of reflector to place around the back and sides of the globe.(Tinfoil works) One to keep the light out of your eyes, and two to harness the entire lighting power of the lantern that you would lose out the sides and back.
They certainly last alot longer than a battery powered flashlight or rechargable spotlight.
Hold it by the bottom and the handle and tilt it toward the ground on an angle.
(Oh yeah don't touch that nut on the top after it's been running awhile![:-]

the lantern is the way to go. we have used them for years the blood really shows up well.what we mount a different handle on it.get some small tubing and flaten both ends,drill a hole in the one end,take and mount that one to the top of the lantern,use a big hose clamp to go around the bottem to attach the other end of pipe.

I have in the past used a colman lantern and if I had to track at night I would use one again in a heart beat. The light from the lantern makes the blood almost glow. Of all the light sources I've used to track at night thisis far and away the best.

When tracking one of my neighbors deer, we got out a colman lantern. Didn't realize it then, but it sure did wonders for the blood trail! Much easier. I highly recommend.

But -- they get hot (don't ask me how I now this) [:@] so be careful!!!

Joejr...the recommended handle..is that to hold the lantern at more of an angle to the ground?

My buddy made a tracking lantern that works awesome. He took a Coleman latern, made a shield out of polished aluminum, and then bent a handle out of conduit. It works really well.

We've used Coleman lanterns for years for tracking deer. On a side note, did you know that even the older lanterns...prior to the Dual Fuel series came out can run on regular gasoline too? We have 1 dual fuel and 2 old ones, all of which run on 92 Octane gasoline, white gas is filtered a little more, but that's all we could tell the difference. Just a hint for ya'll if ya don't have any white gas. Another effective way to track deer is if you have a booster pack for vehicles (little yellow box with jumper cables ya know) just about all of them have a 12 volt outlet for your regular spotlight....talk about lighting up a woods....lol

One I'm interested in though, a guy was telling me today about using a black light for tracking.....said it makes the blood glow. Is this true and has anyone tried it? I watch the TV show CSI, and the the lights they use for biologic evidence appear to black lights, and the stuff...blood...glows like crazy. Anyone here tried it??
