They are good, but make sure you fashion some sort of reflector to place around the back and sides of the globe.(Tinfoil works) One to keep the light out of your eyes, and two to harness the entire lighting power of the lantern that you would lose out the sides and back.
They certainly last alot longer than a battery powered flashlight or rechargable spotlight.
Hold it by the bottom and the handle and tilt it toward the ground on an angle.
(Oh yeah don't touch that nut on the top after it's been running awhile![:-]
