Thanks neighbor !
My youngest brother came over last night for his first chance at bowhunting. I was unable to join him for the hunt but I was able to set him up in a nice spot about 150 yards from my house. The wind wasn't ideal for any of my tree stand locations so he setup on the ground at the base of a fallen tree. Around 6pm he comes knocking on the door with a big smile and told me he connected with a nice 8pt buck about 45min earlier. He dropped off his gear and picked up some toilet paper and some peroxide for tracking. Just after dark he came back empty handed. Apparently the blood trail weakened and the last drops he could find were just before crossing into my neighbors property. This propery is posted so I called and left a msg. for them to contact me when they had a chance. About 10:30pm last night my neighbor calls me and I explain the situation. He immediate turned into an instant a__hole over the phone. [&:] He told me "Tough s__t, sorry about your luck. If I see anyone on my property I will call the police." and then hung up on me. [:@][:@][:@]
My brother called the game commission this morning but they said there was nothing they could do. He was told that they do not get involved in situations such as this except for instances where the deer is laying in plain sight. Then they would send someone to retreive the downed deer from the property. Talk about mixed emotions! I feel bad for my brother but on the other hand I'm ticked off at my neighbor! [:@] I plan on leaving work a little early with hopes of talking to my neighbor face to face to see if we can resolve the issue. |
RE: Thanks neighbor !
Well,..........I guess I'd be paying fines for trespassing!

RE: Thanks neighbor !
good idea. that is terrible. your poor brother. now is the time for you to kiss some major butt. hehe.
|
RE: Thanks neighbor !
WOW![:-] That sucks! Hopefully you will sort it out in person. Good Luck and Congrats to your bro!
|
RE: Thanks neighbor !
ya that sucks u didnt tell him that is was a buck did u b/c thats probly y he wont let u go get it. if that happend to me i would call them and tell them that i shot a doe and it went over.
SOME people are like that thay dont care who got it if its a buck thay want it.if it were me i would go get it at night late at nite with a red flash lightlike abt 2 or 3 am when he is in bed huntingmichigan |
RE: Thanks neighbor !
WHAT A D$*K!
What is he hiding on his property for crying out loud. I mean you were kind enough to call ask, and wait for a response. Is he against hunting, or he just likes to rub people the wrong way. Remember when u meet with him face to face that cooler heads prevail. Im not condoning a co-vert mission to sneak on and get the deer, but thats probably what I would do! If he is an a$$ to me I would be one to him! Jim |
RE: Thanks neighbor !
Best of luck to you. I feel your pain as I had a similar experience about 12 years or so ago. This buck did not have a big rack but had points everywhere. He crossed property lines and I am sure he was dead in the next 100 yards. The neighbor said no way. I called a deputy friend of mine to come and assist me with this. He told me all he could do was make sure I did not enter the property. Seems there is no law giving me the right to retrieve a dead animal that I killed. I still get a little pi$$ed about it when I think of it.[:@]

RE: Thanks neighbor !
That sounds like some BS. I know that in WI you have by law the right to track your deer regardless of who's property it is on.
|
RE: Thanks neighbor !
Deplomency is the best method, good luck and don't loose your cool.
|
RE: Thanks neighbor !
if my neighbor shot a deer and it went on my property i wold help him find it
im shure most of u would too i would rember that and if he shoots a deer and it go's on ur property i wouldent let him get it i would say paybacks are a B!@#h!!!!!!!!! huntingmichigan |
RE: Thanks neighbor !
Well, I hate to say it, But I know where I'd be at first light. It is my responsibility to recover that animal, whether the law agrees with me or not.
|
RE: Thanks neighbor !
Sorry to hear this. But that is typical Pa. Around here people would kill to do better then the next guy.
|
RE: Thanks neighbor !
When he left for work I'd be getting my deer.

To the topic at hand, I am not one to go out of my way to break the law, but in these cases I would rather ask forgiveness than permission. If you're smart about it, the likelyhood of getting caught is small. Take it from me. I've been there on more than one occasion. Urban bowhunting has its drawbacks. |
RE: Thanks neighbor !
Personally I just hang out at home until Mr. Pr!ck goes to work. When he dose and I'm sure he won't skip work to keep you out I'd be in there getting my deer.
This is definately a tough situation. Breaking laws isn't a good idea but I'd have a very hard time latting any animal go to waste. IMO letting the animal rot would be the unethical decision. I truly hope all goes well for you. I agree 100% with neck. If you meet face to face cooler heads prevail(if not club him;)):D |
RE: Thanks neighbor !
Baggin Biggins is absolutely correct. Here in Iowa you can go onto anyones property including state preserves to recover or track a wounded animal as long as you don't carry a weapon. I think that all the states should follow suit with Iowa and pass the same Law. I say that if the deer was wounded when it went on yer property then it is your morale obligation to let someone on yer property to recover it. Come to thnk of it a few years ago during shotgun season I wounded a nice small racked 8 and he crossed the road into some ground that a local outfitter had rented from a farmer I know. Weel I called the game warden and told him what had happened and he asked me where and when the deer went in and I explained to him the situation. He volunteered to go with me and look for this deer because he hated this outfitter. He said just lean yer shotgun against the inside fence where you shot the deer and go get my buck. Well I went in alone that same day and low and behold when I got on the ridge there was all kinds of orange all around. Evidently they were putting on a drive, well I just marched right on through on the blood trail and you want too talk about some pissed off hunters. But they couldn't do a thing cause there was a visible bloodtrail. The outfitter called the game warden and the warden explained that he/she interfered with me they could be arrested for something I can't remember what it was. Just a long story about how well the law works here in Iowa. Oh by the way someone beat me to my deer I wonder if that was why they wanted me out of there so bad??????

RE: Thanks neighbor !
Iowa has a law like THAT. How would someone like me go about trying to get a law passed like that here in WI. That is probably the most fair (and ethical) law I have ever heard. Thanks for the info.
|
RE: Thanks neighbor !
I would say that you need to get yer representative for yer district to start lobbying for it to get brought up in the house. I am not real good with politics but if you got ahold of someone who is I bet they could help ya.

RE: Thanks neighbor !
That is just plain inconsideration!!! What a jerk! People would rather have a rotting animal carcass on their property than to have a good hunter retrieve his prize. That really sucks.
Same sort of thing happened to my brother last year. He shot a deer and it ran onto the neighbors property and he watched it drop. He started to go retrieve it when suddenly he hears this woman screaming hysterically from across the field. She said he'd better not dare come onto her property. She even called the police and of course they did nothing. And the sick part was that you could see the deer lying there rotting..... |
RE: Thanks neighbor !
I think in Wis you can pursue you animal onto others land. i know in iowa you can as long as you are not armed. sorry to hear about your situation. what an ass

RE: Thanks neighbor !
wow that sucks sry for your bro. My neighbors would let me go on their property if i had too.

RE: Thanks neighbor !
I'm glad he pulled through.

RE: Thanks neighbor !
Update :
I was able to talk with my neighbor and he finally agreed to let my brother retreive the deer. We found him approx. 50 yards inside my neighbors property line. I'm really happy it all worked out for the best. My brother is like a kid at Christmas now. :) |
RE: Thanks neighbor !
A little hard to believe all those that advocate breaking the law. I for one do not wish to have laws followed only when one agrees with them.
As for recovery: I have 60 acres of woods, half a great bedding area bordering over 800 acres of public state forest . For years people set up right on the line. They proceeded to shoot at anything coming out of our property often resulting in the deer heading back onto us. Most then proceeded to follow with several armed buddies effectively doing a drive while "attempting recovery" of a possibly wounded animal. NO MORE!! There are signs now prohibiting ANY trespass including recovery. There is a phone # posted - if someone calls, we will meet them to check for evidence of a hit. If there is blood, and unless it appears they were hunting our land from the line (they lose their deer), we will take them unarmed to track. Anyone else caught for any reason goes to court - NO warnings. Its taken a couple years, but people are starting to respect our property. Just wanted to give a reason why some don't allow unrestricted recovery - respect me and I will respect you. Steve |

That's terrible. Ya know you do the right thing by calling him and then people have to act like that. What a shame. Good luck though.

RE: Thanks neighbor !
I'm glad that he finally agreed to let your cousin get his deer. Congrats to him on his deer. Let's see some pics!! But serisously....what a bunch of BS.
Unless the law has changed and I'm not aware of it....in MN you can go retrieve your animal on private property as long as your not carrying a weapon-just like Iowa. I thought this law was a norm across the country, but I guess not. Really doesn't make sense to me why it isn't. I have to give you credit though....calling your neighbor to ask for permission. I know I'd be in the wrong, but I would have just got my animal right away. |
RE: Thanks neighbor !
I'm glad things turned out ok for your brother and you.
Your neighbor on the otherhand.......... If he didn't come around for you you could have let us give him some phone calls to see if we could persuade him to do things a little bit differently? Uncle Matt (in IL) |
RE: Thanks neighbor !
After I started talking with my neighbor I started understanding why he's so bitter at times. I've been living in my current home for about 2 yrs now but never really had a chance to talk with him before. He and his wife keep to themselves and it's rare to even see them out. Anyway, they own 4.5 acres of property which they section off and give 4 hunters (including the owner) each 1 acre to hunt. The problem is that there is alot of hunting pressure on nearby properties and other hunters often tresspass onto his property with no permission. In the past month they've had 2 ladder stands stolen from their property. After we talked for a while I explained to him where I had stands setup and proceeded to explain where my brother was hunting the day he shot his buck. He then said it was ok to retreive the downed deer and thanked me for taking the time to speak with him in person. He did reiterate that he still does not want people tresspassing on his property however if something like this should ever happen again not to hesitate to contact him.
Lesson learned! ;) |

I think it is very fair and I'm glad that the hunters around you are finally starting to respect your property. I hope other property owners use your method. There are times when some laws needs to be broken. NO, it's not "right", but neither is letting a beautiful deer go to waste. Fine me, jail me, do whatever you have to do to make yourself feel better, BUT as long as I didn't POACH the deer, at least let me get it before it spoils. JeramyK: glad things worked out for you, your brother, your neighbor, AND the deer! Good Luck in the future! |
