anybody use ghillie suits when hunting from either ground blinds or tree stands? did you buy the complete suit or are "homemade" designs better?

Sorry to ambush your thread Strmchzr. But I know someone is going to chime in about an asat suit. Maybe I live in a hole but I never heard of them except in this forum. Could someone post a pic? I still use a leafy suit, and am alsways looking for the next great thing. Thanks

Ghilles (sp?) from what little I know come from our military snipers friends. You will find such suites at Basspro or Cabelas. Or like I have seen alot of our more creative and patient guys do make your own. Use 1" to 2" wide burlap strips of varoius lengths, along with other rough camo type materials. Then attach them ALL over you loose fitting pants and jacket. You end up looking like a burlap cousin IT, if your old you will know cousin IT. Use colors and textures that will best match your area. Just go crazy.

I had some surgery a couple monthes ago and was in bed for about a week with time to kill. I took an old pair of military camo pants and cut them up in 1-1/2" x 6" Strips and sewed them on my jacket and hat. It was cheap, not too hard and it really came out nice. The standard woodland camo with some of the strips backwards so it's just light green breaks up my form just great.

Be careful with your ghillie suit. Last firearm deer season in michigan a guy was wearing one and smoking a pipe? It caught fire and gave him burns over 90% of his body. He walked out of the woods for help and died a while later from it. Be careful

Oh yeah!!!! I love using homemade ghillie suits. Where you hunt there are certain colors and types of natural cover. you can make your suit to fit where u hunt. I have been able to stand up with a buck less than ten yards away, full broadside, and he didnt even raise his tail. I am able to go to a spot that looks good and blend right in no prob. It also scares the hell out of the dog. I like to start with mesh camo, can get in any hunting store, get the one with the little holes and tabs. This should cover your whole body almost front to back. From here you can cut holdes to fit your head or arms, what ever coverage you want. This type works well when you are in a tree stand or sitting on the ground. Standing it burrs out your shape and when sitting lays over you and totally covers your shape. You are also able move your hands inside the suit without any outer movement visible. From here you can add different types of cloth of what ever color you need and sew or tie them to the big sheet. For the head you should the same camo but in smaller pieces. You can wrap the leafy camo sheets around your head and face, this works good in a bandana style over the mouth and neck and a hat with mesh camo placed over it and sewn onto the hat. This darkens your eyes. There is nothing better than having deer walk right next to you and not even know you are there. This happened many times with my homemade suit. use your imaganation and test it out with a friend. Also where reg cam underneath suit. Hope this helps
