i agree that the shooter is a complete moron, first of all they were hunting together, i dont know about you guys but when i am hunting with a friend we have a plan as where to meet etc at dark and we each have a general idea of where the other person is.

as far as jail time for the shooter, i dont know, cant say without knowing exactly what happened. BUT its hard to understand how this type of thing happens at all.

This is why I hate the thought of combined seasons in PA. some guys carry tags to shoot any deer, doe or buck. They see something move and open up on it. Even bow season this could happen. You are walking in the dark and some guy lets fly at you thinking you are a deer of any kind, he doesn't have to see if it is a doe or buck. SCAREY!

I carry a flashlight, a big one. lights don't scare deer anyway.

I still don't understand how accident like this happen. Identifying a target is one of the most important thing in hunting, Let alone bow hunting! How can you kill an animal if you don't know where you're going to hit it?

It's sickening to me that a person could get so caught up with killing a deer or a turkey that they loose sight of what's really important, having safe enjoyable outings to the woods. I like to bag a deer or turkey as much as if not more then the next guy but flinging arrows at dusk without knowing 100% positive what you're shooting at is absolutely ludicrous.

There was a man petitioning the courts to get his hunting priviledges back after not hunting fo I believe 15 years. He had shot his friend at dusk 20 years ago and did no jail time, Just 200 hours of community service speaking to hunters safty group about the incident. IMO that's getting off light. Neglegent homicide and reckless act with a firearm is more fitting charge.

THat is terrible. I can't even fathum how anyone could possibly be that stupid. You should not have to wear orange bowhunting. How can you mistake a human for anything other than a human. DUMB!

I wouldn't change any laws because of one stupid guy. In New York, they just voted down requiring orange during gun season. The reason - it might give the dumb ones, an excuse to shoot if they don't see orange, even if they are unsure of their target. No matter what you do, you can't outlaw stupidity. Heck, who knows what the guy who was shot, was doing. He might have been moving around while making turkey calls in dense brush. I've seen this type of thing many times and have "called in" more than one dumb turkey hunter.

A few years ago there was a boy that mistakenly shot his dad for a squirrel! His dad was walking along the backside of a ridge in front of him and just his head would pop up and down and the kid thought it was a squirrel hopping along the ground. I have also head of a guy shooting a man out of a tree thinking he was a turkey on the roost.

Your eyes can play tricks on you sometimes. Your brain can tell you that what you see is what you are looking for sometimes even when you are not. This happens especially to new and inexperienced hunters. Be sure of your target and beyond.
