Default performance underwear

What do you recommend for the first layer of clothing for cold NY treestand weather. There are so many choices out there for performance underwear and none of it is cheap so I want buy the best stuff I can the first time.

For a first layer I like some thing that will wick moisture, either silk or a polyester, followed by wool. Stay away from things such as sweat pants as they are made of cotton and don't belong in the woods. Dressing in layers is the way to go, but use the right stuff and cut down on the amount of layers you need.

I use "smart wool" long johns. The smart wool brand is soft, warm & does not make you itch. Wool will keep you warm when it gets wet. This could save your life in extreme conditions?
