Default New Or Used???

I'm getting my first bow this spring. Should it be brand new or is a used bow good enough to start with? (I want to hunt with it this fall) Thanx.

I got a used bow from my brother for my first year of bowhunting and then bought a new one the following season. If the bow is relatively new and is in good working order you should be just fine with a used bow. Make sure it is the right draw length and that it is tuned! I would bet that one of your local pro shops would have an older model or a trade-in that they could set up just for you.

If you get bitten by the bow hunting bug, then you can upgrade next year when you have a better feel for archery and more knowledge about what you want.

To get a well tuned and fitted bow, I would get a bow from a pro shop. I did make a real good deal on a almost new bow. So you can get great stuff used! If you go with something used, make sure you get the right draw length. If the bow doesn't fit you, you will never be able to shoot your best with it. Good luck!

If you have the money, a new bow bought from a good proshop is the way to go. Used bows can be great values, but I would still go The proshop route. Proper fit and feel are more important than the specific brand and a bow being new or used.

I would tend to agree with all of the above. If you can get a decent used bow or a brand new one then it doesn't really matter which way you go...but having it set up at a pro shop is the only way to go...<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

Heres something to look at , I don't know if anyone else said this I didn't read the other post. But I got my first bow last season, and I didn't have alot of money but go and look for a Last years bow. It was bow that was the new style last year but then they got in new bows the the new year and they marked down the price of the last years bows but there still brand new. This is what i did and i got a GOlden Eagle and i like it.

When you get a good deal on a slightly used bow, you're getting it after the initial depreciation has happened. I think it's a good way to go. If it's a current model and you find it at a proshop that can fit it to you, what do you have to loose? I took my time and watched the used rack and ended up with a barely used Martin with some decent accessories from a Martin dealer and he agreed to honor the warranty. I got a really sweet bow at the price of a much lesser model. Martins are affordable to begin with but I feel like I really got my moneys worth.
Then there are these guys who have found ways to avoid that depreciation factor all together. But if you want something to learn with you aren't really in their shoes as a consumer.
Remember that you'll need a lot more than just a bow.
You'll get lots of good advice coming here for sure.

It really doesn't matter whether it's new or old. What matters is that it fits you. As long as the draw length fits you and the strings and cables are in good shape, grab some arrows and start a new addiction. As time goes on and you become proficient, you may decide to upgrade.

Shoot straight and have fun!

I would strongly advise any new shooter buying a used bow to take it to a pro shop and get it checked over before paying for it. Until you learn what to look for to see the tell tale signs of abuse, you could be buying someone else's problems instead of a bow.

When I buy a used bow, first thing I do is get the string/cables replaced, the axles/pivots cleaned & lubed and the cam bushings/bearings checked for wear. That all costs money, so I rarely buy a used bow unless I get a great deal on one.
