For the most part I give Washington state's Department of Natural Resources a thumbs up. There are a lot of things they could do better, but they run on a low budget with a lot of political pressure being put on them by everyone from the greenies to the big forest product companies.
Our Department of Fish and Wildlife (which is separate from the DNR) is in the same boat. They do a pretty decent job overall, with moments of greatness on occasion.
Both departments have to deal with HUGE environmental hot potatoes here in the west: Spotted owls, endangered salmon, old growth forests, wildfires, and water quality to name a few of the more well known.

THE GAME DEPARTMENT IN WASHINGTON COULD DO BETTER, WE HAVE A BIG THING GOING ON RIGHT NOW IN THE STATE WITH THIS I-713 WHICH BANS TRAPPING BY USING BODY GRABBING TRAPS. IT PASSED BY PUBLIC VOTE 2 YEARS AGO AND COME TO FIND OUT THE HSUS LIED TO ALL OF THE VOTERS WHO VOTED TO GET THE BAN IN PLACE, SO NOW IT HAS PASSED THROUGH THE SENATE WITHA 38 TO 11 VOTE TO REPPEAL IT NOW ITS WAITING TO GO TO HOUSE FLOOR TO GET VOTED ON, BUT NOW THE CO-CHAIR OF THE HOUSE IS SAYING THAT IT WILL DIE IN THE HOUSE, BECAUSE A LOT OF THE MEMEMBER DON'T WANT THE BILL CHANGED.
PART 2 THE REASON WHY THE DNR RUNS ON A LOW BUDGET IS BECUASE THEY APPOINTED A NEW HEAD CHAIRMAN AND THIS LADY WENT OUT AND HIRED AND CREATED ALL THESE NEW JOB THAT WERE USELESS, GOOD THING IS SHE GOT FIRED OR RESIGNED AND THE NEW GUY RUNNING THE SHOW THREW OUT ALL OF THE JOBS SHE CREATED. SO THERE HAVE SOME MORE MONEY BUT NOT ALL OF WHAT THEY NEED. KINDA GOOD TO HAVE ABROTHER WHO WORKS FOR THE DNR

Md's DNR has there hands tied by that anti hunting Gov. Glenning. He fires anyone that speaks against him and puts his anti hunting friends in positions to make crucial dessisions.
