Draw length is too long, stance is too open, too big around the middle, maybe locking out his bow arm and he's probably leaning back to boot. Try him with a bow at least a couple inches shorter in the draw. Have him move his back foot forward to turn his shoulders more to the target. Keep the elbow unlocked with maybe a slight outward bend.
If all else fails, he can buy a chest protector to keep his stuffin's out of the string.

I agree with the others, his draw length has to be too long. And I bet he shoots with some kinda funky angle.
Get him to quit shooting and go over basic fundamentals with him. Stance, draw length, release point, and it should help him and his little chest problem out.

I should add that he shoots an older bow, probably ten years or more. It is fairly long by todays standard axle/axle length. This is probably why alot of newer archers will never have known or heard of this problem. The new mini bows with their 30 inch axle/axle have too sharp a string angle to get near your chest. Try an older bow with about a 44 inch axle/axle and you will know this phenomenon on occasion. Ask a competitive recurve shooter and they will know what you are talking about.
