I had a freezer go off a couple years ago. We werent using it much so i didnt notice it for awhile. I kept going to the basement and noticing a funny odor, kept asking the wife if she smelled it and she said no, finally one day i opened the freezer - oh man that stench hit me so bad in the face - beef, venison, bread dough, a turkey and the worst - chicken. The bread dough had busted the bag and was growing across the bottom of the freezer.
I did a lot of research and took a while but i got the smell out (from time to time i still get a whiff but i think it is jsut psychological from the first time i opened it). Anyways I crumpled a newspaper up and put it in along with a 5 lb box of baking soda and shut the freezer for a couple days, then opened and took out the paper. Next i mixed up hot water and Borax, dumped that in on the baking soda and scrubbed the hell out of the inside with a scrub brush. I used a shop vac to get the water out and then repeated the process again.
I keep a 5 lb box of baking soda in there along with a bowl of vanilla extract (supposed to kill odors).
Good luck with it, and i agree it was off longer than one day for the meat to thaw and spoil

Clean it thoroughly first and we use fresh coffee grounds vs baking soda in the freezer or fridge. I replace the grounds every couple of days and it has worked on several occasions for us in the past. Once got a old fridge for the hunting camp, worked but the guy who owned it never cleaned I am sure. Stunk to high heaven, so bad I need to plug my nose when cleaning it out!! Once cleaned I left the door open in the backyard for a few days with BS, then rolled into the garage fired it up and put a couple bowls with fresh ground coffee with in a few days it smelled JL.
The newspaper trick works my mom and grandma swear by it for a freezer gone bad job. My dad on the other hand believes that once the smell of rot is in the freezer it's only purpose is the junk yard...really picky nose on the man!

I threw mine away and got a new one. The power went off at camp and must have been off for a few days. The pack of chicken I left in the freezer smelled like hell. I tried cleaning it but gave up and pitched it.

Mine did the same last year, i had turkey, pheasant, rabbit, deer and some fish, it took 3 days for me to smell it. That was the most nastiest thing i have ever done was cleaning that deep freeze out..........by the way, why do u still have four deer in your freezer that is alot of meat to be eaten in just a few months?

The newspaper trick works like a charm. I had one full of meat that was off for 2 weeks and the smell was so bad you can't describe it with words. Cleaned it with everything but the smell was still there. I then tryed the newspaper and the smell was history.
