???Best Mechanicals???
I have always shot fixed heads and with out any problem but i want to experiment with mechanicals this year i shoot 100 grain heads. I generate between 75ft. lbs and 90 ft. lbs of KE depending on which bow im shooting. i want something with a pretty big cutting diameter. I hunt al sorts of animals so im not just shooting deer thanks for the input

RE: ???Best Mechanicals???
I've got very limited experience with mechanicals. Got tired of fooling with 'em after one summer of experimenting. They all had some kind of some kind of problem. Either they didn't function properly without being cleaned up and fixed, or the blades weren't up to snuff for sharpness. All but one, that is.
The NAP Shockwaves were the only mechanicals I tried that were what I would call 'hunt ready', right out of the box. They were sharp and functioned perfectly. With the energy levels you're talking about, you can use dang near any mechanical you want. Whichever ones you wind up with, make sure you check each blade on each head for sharpness and function before hunting with 'em. |
RE: ???Best Mechanicals???
My experience with spitfires has been excellent, I have a friend who killed a black bear with one, the damage was awsome!
|
RE: ???Best Mechanicals???
Can't member which one, but Rocket makes one with, like, a 2 3/4" cut I believe. I have never hunted with this one, but I always liked the wolverine. Just curious, why the switch?

RE: ???Best Mechanicals???
spit fire all the way, no rubber bands, and it sounds like you have enough kE for a mechanical, i have had no quams with that broadhead it has truly been the best ive used.
|
RE: ???Best Mechanicals???
For that much ke , buckblasters or hamerheads
|
RE: ???Best Mechanicals???
I am a big fan of RM Gator XPs, 2inch Cutting diameter and they penetrate extremely well for thier size. I think 5shot gave them a 26 with an A for blade sharpness.
|
RE: ???Best Mechanicals???
I would use a spitfire or a rocket steelhead, they seem to be the most durable.
|
RE: ???Best Mechanicals???
Rocket Steelhead-125 Extreme Broadheads: The steelhead extreme couples the popular steelhead's 1 piece solid steel ferrule with 3 extra long, extra tough blades. The result - a broadhead delivering 1 3/4" cutting diameter, swept-back blade design ensures blades open immediately on contact. Full-size pathfinder point deliver bone busting power to achieve the best penetration.:)

RE: ???Best Mechanicals???
Rocky Mountain Snyper. Sharper than Rockets, opens better than Spitfire. I'm very glad I made the switch.
|
RE: ???Best Mechanicals???
My favorite is vortex minimax , 100 grain 2 blades 2" of cut . They work great , and I had passthrus on the deer I shot last year useing them at 60lbs and 28" draw .
|
RE: ???Best Mechanicals???
Spitfire 100 grain.
|
RE: ???Best Mechanicals???
Spitfires is what I would recommend. Have worked great for me.
|
RE: ???Best Mechanicals???
I hear Rocket Mini-Blasters are good. Shoot just like fieldtips I hear.
Where can I see these Spitfires? |
RE: ???Best Mechanicals???
I have heard good things about Spitfires so I am gonna give them a try this year.
|
RE: ???Best Mechanicals???
Wasp Jackhammer SST 100 GR. 1 3/4" cutting diameter and fly like field points on a well tuned bow. Huge devastating hole with great penetration. I've used them for four years without any problems. Tried many others, but keep coming back. My vote for the best.

RE: ???Best Mechanicals???
I'd go with the Rockets... haven't found a stronger mechanical yet.
|
RE: ???Best Mechanicals???
Anyone use the Scorpion XP broadheads?
|
RE: ???Best Mechanicals???
i jus made the switch to the Tekens & they are awsome with a 2" cutting diam. & i havent had a problem with them yet while practing tho but ill check them for damage & sharpness tho. to me in my opinion Tekens are the best...... oh by the way there at the BPS.

I second the Rocky Mountain Snyper. I love that head.
|
RE: ???Best Mechanicals???
Do your guys's mechanicles fly the same as your field points?
|
RE: ???Best Mechanicals???
yes - Rocky Mountain Snyper
2 for 2 |
RE: ???Best Mechanicals???
Rocket SteelHeads
and yes they do fly like the field points. CLipped 2 arrows testing that one out [:@] |
RE: ???Best Mechanicals???
cool thanks guys i hear a bunch about rockets mostly good but theres a couple of people who say the blades break and that they are dull anyway i will pick some up and try it
|
RE: ???Best Mechanicals???
I love the Grim Reapors. Work great for me and don't use rubberbands. Seemed to be very well built, but i haven't tried any of the rockets, so I don't know how they compare to each other.
|
RE: ???Best Mechanicals???
I still like my Rocket Steelhead 100's.:D
|
RE: ???Best Mechanicals???
i had AWFUL experience with spitfires! the first buck i ever drew back on, i had a complete pass-through and not one blade opened. a friend of mine had the same thing happen to him. i switched to fixed blades and they suck too as far as i am concerned. i feel that your broadheads should fly identical to field tips with no tuning. so i switched back to mechanicals but this time i am using grim reapers. they do devastating damage and fly very straight. i also like the rocket steelheads. i have them as back ups.

RE: ???Best Mechanicals???
when i switched to fixed broadheads, i had a hard time getting them to fly straight without all kind of screwing around with them. i like mechanicals because they fly just like a practice point. sorry if i didnt word that quite right or whatever. and i am from planet earth, the same one that cool-guys like bobco are from.

RE: ???Best Mechanicals???
I'm a firm believer in Rocket, specifically the Wolverine 3P... which is as close to a Rocket Steelhead in shape / size. My Rockets have always hit point of aim with no tuning fuss. The blades are a bit lacking in sharpness, but I've not had any trouble pushing them through the chest of whitetails out to 35 yards. Clean pass throughs at only 62 pounds of draw weight... very nice. If you like, they can be sharpened quickly with any basic kitchen style knife sharpener. (Just hold the blade with pliers and pass it through.) I can't comment on Rockets that have a cutting diameter more than 1 1/8 inch, as there hasn't been a need to change sice using the little 75 grain 3P's. If I were to go back to fixed blades, I'd shoot Muzzy. I don't plan on switching from Rocket anytime soon.

RE: ???Best Mechanicals???
the first buck i ever drew back on, i had a complete pass-through and not one blade opened. a friend of mine had the same thing happen to him. What I have seen ........is people mistaking the small entrance wound as them not opening .........because they do , in fact, open after about 2 inches below the hide ! I have also seen people say they didn't open because when they pulled them out of the ground the blades were shut .......which is what should happen if the blades are not bent or the groove in the ferrule are not clogged ! I garentee you that if you would have thoroughly inspected the grooves in the ferrule of the Spitfire you shot you would have found "some" tissue or blood or hair or something !! Or if you cleaned the deer yourself......you would have noticed that after entering the chest cavity that there was a big triagular cut slicing through the organs ! I just don't buy it !! I have seen 10-15 deer shot with them (including 8-9 by me) and all of them opened ...........even one that was shot by accident that was covered in dried blood .......it still opened and killed the animal in short order !! |

RE: ???Best Mechanicals???
100 gr. wasp Jackhammer
I made a bad shot on a small 8 last year, the arrow deflected off a small limb and hit the deer far back, the deer only went 20 yds and dropped. When I cleaned the deer it looked like it was hit with a 30-06, hit the liver, the devestation was tremendous. It gets my vote. |

RE: ???Best Mechanicals???
I have used the Grim reaper mechanicals and had great luck. Last year I made a close range shot on a doe and my lower limb hit the stands rail and kicked my arrow off target. It struck hear in the hip and it drove the arrow all the way through the other hip and was sticking out about 4 inches. I was impressed with a great job on a terrible hit. I have harvested three other deer with that particulat head and have had nothing but good success.

RE: ???Best Mechanicals???
Try the new Rocky Mountain Gator XP.
|
RE: ???Best Mechanicals???
For those that think that there blades did not open on impacked! Try this! find some type of target that when you shoot the arrow into it, the arrow will only go half way through like one of those cheaper targets that are only a couple of inch`s thick. After you shoot go look at the broadhead? It will more than likely be closed! know look at the target very well and you will see where the blade`s cut the target going through! Just about all mech heads close back after going through there target`s unless of course something keeps them from closing.
