Most deer I've shot- including several heart shots- have gone something like 50-70 yards.

Here is a little deer trivia. A deer that is shot by a bullet (heart/lungs) expires in 22 seconds. A deer that is shot with an arrow in the same spot expires in 21 seconds.

I suspect that the average distance to be 60-80 yards.

However, most of these have been out of sight, since they have all been in heavily wooded areas.

In some areas I hunt (especially in early fall - with leaves), I can not see further than 20 yards.

I'd suspect none of them would have been out of sight if I was hunting over a field or hunting in less dense of an area.

The distance they run or if you can see them fall has little bearing on how good a hunter you are...much of it depends on the specific deer and the geography of where you hunt.

We should all strive for ethical lethal kill shots that take them out asap.
Maybe that is the most important point of this topic.

id say average is about in that 50 to 80 yard range my favorite hits are when it passes through and the deer doesnt even run away they go back to eating and just suddenly fall over. i also like head shooting does ( w/ a bow) they drop like a rock!!!

You've shot 4 consectutive deer that dropped with a bow, are you intentionally spining them?
