Boy, you guys are something else. Was it hunting season or Archery season when he shot the deer. Probably Yes, did he shoot it in the no no area, the neck, NO, he hit it in the shoulder. How is that totally unethical?

OK, he didn't aim for the heart or lungs. Last I looked on a deer, they are both right next to one another.

When I take a shot at a deer, I go for the kill zone. Sometimes, things happen and we hit them not exactly where we planned. If you practice long enough and can place a shot or arrow anywhere you want, and the deer fliches the last second, what are you going to do, cry about it, NO, you learn and go forward.

OK, he aimed for the shoulder, get over it. He killed the deer. Maybe the deer suffer a little longer than it should have. How many of you wounded a deer, and not killed them? How long did they suffer, sometimes years. How many of you have had a heart shot and the deer ran over 100 yards before they died.

My first buck, I got with a shotgun. The deer went down and after an hour later, he was still alive. So, we went to dispatch him, shot him again, cut open his neck, and he still would not die. He eventually did, and that is what hunters do, we kill.

Who said, I am not a deer hunter, but rather a White Tail Reduction Specialist?

I believe in treating the deer with great respect and dispatching them as qucikly and etically as possible, but things or life happens. GET OVER IT!

I had no problem looking at the pics, I've seen way worse shots than that, believe me. I don't think the thread should have been deleted either.
The shot was obviously lethal. I dont like the part about doing it on purpose, thats all.

Here is why. IMO it's a hunters duty to take the most lethal shot possible every time. It's that simple.

When you deliberately take less than the best shot possible, as Len admitted he did, IMO you are being disrespectful of the animal. It makes no difference if it's hunting season or for game control. If you can take a shoulder shot to see what will happen, why not a gut shot or neck shot to see what will happen? It's not the same, obviously, but it's a slippery slope and one I don't believe anyone should start down. It's a bowhunters responsibility to take EVERY animal as quickly and cleanly as possible. Those are the ethics I was taught.

I'm not Len's Mom. He can and will continue to do whatever he personally feels is right and ethical. That's his business. I'm not telling him what to do, I'm just posting an opinion. That's what boards like this are for. Each person decides for him or herself what to do in the end.

Don't you think it's a little hipocritical to make these 2 statements, especially in the same post. So which one is it. He aimed for the shoulder, the deer suffered, just get over it..or..I believe in dispatching deer as cleanly and ethically as possible. I think next time I'm out I'll just shoot for the left eye and take out the brain, if I miss and hit the face just get over it.

OK, I can agree with you on that. He should have aimed for the kill zone.

But I don't see that this post should have been removed. I agree, with you, but he could have done worse and only wounded the deer.

We all make mistakes, sometimes they work out and sometimes they don't. Anyway, this could have been used as an example of what not to do versus removing it.

Just because your equipment has the capability to shoot through the shoulder blade of a deer doesn't mean that it's an ethical shot to take. Shooting through a large bone like that isn't quite as simple as just generating the necessary force to do so, there are a lot of other variables involved. If the angle is wrong by even a little bit that arrow can very easily ricochet into the deer's brisket, or perhaps not penetrate far enough to dispatch the deer in a short amount of time. Is it REALLY worth taking a known risk like that just to see what would happen? It's like someone driving home from the bar while drunk, making it home safely, then posting the story about how they could do it because they have enough experience driving drunk, but they wouldn't recommend other people doing it. Sure, they made it home safely this time - but what about the next? As a bowhunting community it is our duty to ensure that we take the best possible shot on every occasion. In my opinion there are no acceptable excuses for taking a marginal shot, no matter what type of equipment or experience you have. Even the most seasoned hunters with the best equipment in the world are going to make a mistake sooner or later, and when you're taking a shot with a much smaller margin of error the chances are a lot greater that it's going to happen and something is going to go wrong. Whether that results in a lost deer that ends up in someone's backyard, or an animal that suffers needlessly for days before expiring, it's simply not acceptable. Which one of us here wants to answer to a non-hunting homeowner or motorist who happens to see a deer limping around with an arrow sticking out of it's shoulder? Accidents are one thing, but if that arrow was put there intentionally then what do you say? How does that make us look? It just boggles my mind how anyone can support a decision to shoot a deer in the shoulder "just to see how this new broadhead would work."

I did not take the shot, he did. I would not have aimed for the shoulder, he did, the deer died, end of story.

Was it the best practice to do, no, but it's over. Hopefully, he learned something and go for the kill zone next time, not the shoulder.

Since I don't aim for the head, or left eye, and neither did he, that's irrelevant.

How many deer have you wounded while hunting? Did you ever make a bad shot? Are you human and make mistakes? Do you practice every chance you can to make the best shot possible?

You know the answers, hopefully he now does.

The first buck I ever took was shot in the ear hole with a 30-30. I was 13.
With being so nervous and inexperienced I was looking at the rack instead of concentrating on the kill zone. I guess my Dad should have persecuted me instead of hugging me and congratulating me.

i might disagree with you...a gut shot and neck shot can kill a deer also. are gut shots and neck shots ethical? i don't think so. are shoulder shots ethical? nope, not in my opinion, since we're talking shots taken on purpose.
