you are allowed to hunt raccoons and coyotes and stuff at night with spot lights. so if you did have a gun for some reason, could you just say you were hunting them?
Down here you can spotlight and hunt hogs, varmits, rabbits, and exotics at night. Your not suppose to spotlight deer, but if you do there is not much they can say about it. Some wardens might give you a ticket for harassing wildlife, but as long as you dont have a dead deer in the back of your truck they cant take any of your weapons etc. or give you any major tickets.
During the months of sept and oct. we do spotlight surveys on the ranch. Some times we call the warden to tell him what were doing, they never have a problem with it.
But shooting deer at night in Texas can get you into alot of trouble. Poaching down here is a felony, especially if your tresspassing on somebody else land while your doing it.

Here in PA I've never heard it called shining. Shining is something you do to your shoes. We call it spotting or spotlighting. If you have a gun or bow with you it is called poaching. I wonder if spotting is called shining in the same areas where people think soda is called pop?

here in MS.,you can spot light without any type gun except on WMAS.there is no gun allowed to hunt at night except a .22 or shotgun with shot no larger than #6.if you are spotlighting and have a gun or shotsize larger than the above, you are hunting deer at night and it will cost you $5000,your truck, gun, light and license even though you don't fire a gun.

my one question is that you are allowed to hunt raccoons and coyotes and stuff at night with spot lights. so if you did have a gun for some reason, could you just say you were hunting them?

In Va. we call it jack lighting, it is legal as long as you don't have a gun or bow in your vehicle, on a funny side note it also says in the regs you can't have a spear gun in your vehicle while jack lighting, now you know as well as I do that some idiot tried poaching a deer with a spear gun for that to have ever been put into the regs!

Legal here in Kansas as long as you don't have any weapons in the vehicle. We do it all of the time...in fact, my spotlight is sitting on the floor of my vehicle as we speak.
