Ever Seen a Bobcat while hunting?
I hunt in Southern Indiana and have heard stories of guys seeing bobcats every now and then, I talked to a conservation officer at a show a couple weeks ago and he said he gets a couple calls every year about bobcats getting hit on the interstate. i would love to get one mounted and put in my trophy room, have any of you ever seen one in the wild?
|
RE: Ever Seen a Bobcat while hunting?
Nope but one of my shooting friends said he saw 3 about 3/4 the way grown about 3 weeks ago.

RE: Ever Seen a Bobcat while hunting?
Never seen one here in Illinois. I've heard a few reports of people seeing them. Check out this link. This guy has a cougar as a very close neighbor.

RE: Ever Seen a Bobcat while hunting?
I had an adult with 3 little ones come in to the fawn distress call that I was using a couple years ago. Those are the only ones I have ever seen
|
RE: Ever Seen a Bobcat while hunting?
I've seen a few, even when I was lookin' for 'em:D A lot of guys that do predator calling see them every year. Some places have enough of them to call and kill 3 or 4 in a day/night of hunting. I've only killed a few, but I'm always lookin' too!! I've also had one of my mounted, they do make a great mount:)

RE: Ever Seen a Bobcat while hunting?

Wow, scary cougar pics!!
I saw a bobcat once while rabbit hunting, pretty cool to see. Disappeared pretty fast too. |
RE: Ever Seen a Bobcat while hunting?
Several years ago I was fishing in northern wisconsin. I looked on the shore line and saw a mother bobcat with four young ones. Coming in the opposite direction right at them was a mother duck with her ducklings. The two mothers were both in the lead and as they passed each other they seemed to ignore each other. But the young ones seemed quite curious and it appeared that they wanted to play. The mothers both scolded their young and they procceded on their way. It was quite an experience to witness............dabow

Never seen one, only 2 pelts from what others have killed. Id love to take one but the chances of even seeing one are so slim I wont have a tag if i did so then i couldnt shoot it anyway.

RE: Ever Seen a Bobcat while hunting?
I had one come about 10yds from my stand. Down in southern Illinois they are all over on the farm we hunt. Would like to kill a couple to help the turkey population but ya know you cant kill em in Illinois.

RE: Ever Seen a Bobcat while hunting?
I have killed 1 with my bow and another with a pistol and let another go after the farmer asked me not to shoot them.:eek:Even though we have a season on them.
I live in Henderson Ky but killed them in Crittenden co.There are really many more than people think. They are just so nocternal that people don't see them. |
RE: Ever Seen a Bobcat while hunting?
I saw one at 50 yards while rifle hunting my first year. I saw one last year right under my stand. I was pleased with my scent control, because he came in from directly downwind and stopped and drank from the stream I was over. I could have nailed him easily, but it was prime time and I wanted a deer.
|
RE: Ever Seen a Bobcat while hunting?
I thought I would share this little story.
Where I hunt during gun season in Webster Co there are some real practical jokers and someone had found a dead bobcat so one of the guys thought it might be funny to put the bobcat in another guys stand on opening morning.PICTURE THIS,CLIMBING IN YOUR STAND IN THE DARK AND POKING YOUR HEAD OVER THE PLATFORM OF YOUR LADDER STAND AND HAVING A BOBCAT STARING BACK AT YOU.Everyone within a mile radius could tell when that person got to his stand that morning. You heard him scream and then you heard him start cussing the person that he knew did it. ![]() |
RE: Ever Seen a Bobcat while hunting?
I saw my first and only bobcat while rifle hunting in November 2002. He came sneaking across below me at about 75 yards. It was a cool site to see, especially since they're so rare in Maryland.
I was pleased with my scent control, because he came in from directly downwind and stopped and drank from the stream I was over. |
RE: Ever Seen a Bobcat while hunting?
Never seen one while hunting, but we have a family of them that lives in the neighborhood. I think they're mixed with domestic cats tho... Does this happen often? I first saw one that kind of lives in my boat. I have to park it away from my apartment, next to a wooded area. I started finding some poop and bird remains in the boat, and one day spooked it out of the boat. It looked like an enormous tabby cat with a stubby tail. I thought it was a regular cat with its tail cut off, but a neighbor said he saw a bunch of little ones and they all had stubby tails.

RE: Ever Seen a Bobcat while hunting?
I have seen several while hunting. I have tried getting drawn on a couple while bowhunting but so far I have been unsuccessful.
comndr45- No offense and I'm not knocking your scent control by any means, but cats don't rely too much on their sense of smell like coyotes and foxes do. A cat's eyesight and hearing are what keeps them out of danger. I would have to disagree with that statement. I would probably even believe that they don't use their sense of smell as their primary means of hunting but that still doesn't mean that they don't have an acute sense of smell and use it for their own protection. RE: Ever Seen a Bobcat while hunting?
I've never seen a bobcat while hunting, but I did have one cross a road in front of me when I was going hunting. Does this count? Anyway's! there's lot's of time to be spent in the wood's and you just never know what will show up.

RE: Ever Seen a Bobcat while hunting?
Yep, saw one in PA in the Poconos, hunting deer. I had noticed something looking at me about 30 yeards away. Put the scope and cross hairs on his head. Than I watched him walk away. A few months later, I saw a female Bobcat playing with her kittens near the road. Haven't seen them since and this was about 5 years ago.

Are you sure you've seen one before? Actually those are cougars in the link above. Click and look for yourself;) Yep I can identify most wildlife.[8D] There is a huge difference between a cougar and a bobcat. Never seen one here in Illinois. RE: Ever Seen a Bobcat while hunting?
Over the years I've probably seen 10 or so while actually on the stand. Missed one with my bow at 15yds [:@] You think a deer can duck an arrow?? A bobcat can turn himself inside out.
I also shot one with a 243 one day while on stand. Perfect shoulder shot at about 50 yds. He dropped and laid dead still for about 5 minutes then he started flopping around and the next thing I now he is high tailing it out of the county. I tracked him into a big log jam, where I let him be, no way was I going digging through there with a wounded cat holed up in there. Those critters are tough as steel. |
RE: Ever Seen a Bobcat while hunting?
I have seen them while hunting, but Im in PA. They are very quite little creatures, cant hardly hear them walkin. If you do get one and get it mounted dont take it to the guy that did these 2.

I see them fairly regularly here in michigan, but only when I am hunting way off the beaten path.
Ridgerunner I feel sorry for you with those two mounts. I laughed really hard at first when I saw them thinking they were april fools jokes!!:D I think I would have about choked the taxidermist. That really sucks. |
RE: Ever Seen a Bobcat while hunting?
Ive seen 3bobcats while hunting, 2 of them was bleating with my own voice, and one of them came into a turkey call in spring gobbler season... I wish i would have had a camcorder on those hunts, but they will always be in my mind....
|
RE: Ever Seen a Bobcat while hunting?
I saw a young one while bowhunting and got a picture of one on my camtrakker.

RE: Ever Seen a Bobcat while hunting?
Saw one this past Dec. while sitting in a ground blind. I was watchin the squirrels, when they all dissapeared up trees, no barking like when a coyote or fox comes by. Was wonderin what was up when I spotted some movement about 30 yards out & thought at first it was a small dog. Cat walked by about 20 feet away & never saw me. I guess they cant smell real good as he aproached from downwind & never even looked in my direction.

RE: Ever Seen a Bobcat while hunting?
Techy,
Those are bobcats in the Bobcat10's post. The picture you posted was a cougar. 2 different animals. Look closely at the pictures and you will see the difference. |
RE: Ever Seen a Bobcat while hunting?
Swamp
Techy was talking about the cougars posted in the link above bobcats photos. he quoted the link. ;) |
RE: Ever Seen a Bobcat while hunting?
My apologies techy. I thought you were referring to Bobcat's post, originally.
|
RE: Ever Seen a Bobcat while hunting?
Shadowace, trust me,none of these guys are 20 ft off the ground. You would be lucky to see them 10 ft off the ground and the stand in question is about 8 ft.I know what you are saying about being safe and I agree but between these guys, anything is possible.
