What is the fastest bow??????

Who makes the fastest bow and what is it. I have heard of 100lb draw bows, how fast are they? Whats the difference with IBO and AMO rating. which one is closer to what you would really shoot?

I saw a bow that shoots either 340 fps or 430 fps. It was a Mathew's.

RE: What is the fastest bow??????

The fastest bows on the market today I think would be the Bowtech line. The fastest Bowtech would be the Black Knight, Which has an IBO rating of 350.

RE: What is the fastest bow??????

For pure speed.......The fastest production bow on the market right now is the BowTech Black Knight.......350+fps
At the ATA show we had one at 70#, 29" with a 350gr arrow shooting consistently between 340-342fps with the factory hush kit,and brass nock set.(5 3/4" brace height) That's 29"/ 342fps.[:-]

Pound for pound the fastest bow is probably the BowTech "Patriot Dually" which will shoot in the 330's.....the 30"/70# we had was shooting 332fps for me with a hush kit, brass nock set and 3 eliminator buttons. The kicker? a measured 7 5/8" brace height.:) There are bows from other manufacturers that might shoot in the 330+ range but they aren't doing it with a brace height anywhere near this bad boy.

My BowTech Pro38 Dual Cam (2001) was shooting 336fps at 30"/70# (loop only) 6 5/8" brace height.

You guys seeing a theme here?;)

They also have the Patriot single cam in the 320's at 7" brace height.

Then we can get into the prototype model that was being played with at the show......everything measured by Norb Mullaney himself. 29"/69.7# 350gr arrow.......364fps. 5 3/4" brace height.

One thing you have to remember about 100lb bows and such, if you still shoot the bow at 5grs/lb of draw weight it is going to be shooting very similar speeds as their 70# cousins......they're just doing it with much heavier arrows and hitting a WHOLE LOT harder.

Also speed isn't everything, but when you load bows like these up with some heavy arrows you have an unreal combo of Kinetic Energy and shootability.

RE: What is the fastest bow??????

I saw in person a new High Country Carbon bow shoot consistently in the 350+ range through the chrono. That was at 70 lbs, and 30" draw. I know they say that they are the fastest bows in the world. I only believe it because I got to see it in person. I believe the personal best out of that bow that day was 354. That's pretty damn fast!

RE: What is the fastest bow??????

Ahhhhh Bowhunter Chris,
You have fallen for the 5gpi deal.....that's not the same as 5grs/lb.
High Country is warrantying (is that a word?) their bows to shoot super light arrows of their own make that only weight 5grs. per inch and that's the secret behind the speed. These finished arrows come in well below 5grs per lb of draw weight which the industry standard when talking IBO speed ratings.
More power to them but not my cup of tea, and that's not the same as IBO speed rating which is a 30"/70#/350gr combination.

To give you an example, just for the heck of it we stripped an arrow down to 300grs at the show and fired it thru the chrono from that Prototype bow. This arrow is still heavier than the finished High Country arrow and it shot 392fps at 69.7#/29".[:-]

I think High Country is shooting these bows at less than 5 grains/lb though. They are touting their new carbon bows as being able to shoot 375 fps, but doing it with like 3.5 grains/lb. You also have to buy their carbon arrows to get those kinds of speeds if I'm not mistaken.

RE: What is the fastest bow??????

Yes, that was with their own arrows that it shot like that. I can tell you that when it shot an everyday arrow, such as a beman, the speed dropped to somewhere around 300. It definately wasn't quite as fast. I'm not a speed freak, so a speed bow isn't something I'm into. It was just pretty cool to see a bow shoot over 350fps.

I saw the HCA carbon bow at the Harrisburg,PA. show.I also shot it myself, and it chrono at 372 fps.It was set-up with their Speed Pro Max arrows at 5.5grs per inch.So I was thinking, what if I got the Speed Pros and used them with my LX?With my 30in.draw,I'd might get something like 315-320fps.So I gave Len a call and he brought a very good point. If you go buy a new Corvette and red line it every time you shift, how long will it last?I think I'll stick with the ACC's or Goldtips...Bob

RE: What is the fastest bow??????

Fastest production bow RIGHT NOW is the Bowtech BK2, only because no-one else bothers with all of that junk anymore![8D]

Speed is very easy to get, honestly it is... there are many tricks of the trade such as utilizing short brace heights, grinding down and pre-stressing limbs, grinding the cams down to nothing and shortening their radius so they are lighter and come around faster, polishing axels, running bearings for less friction, running lesser-strand strings,(5fps per loop!) and of course creating a nasty draw-force curve to combine with any and all of the aforementioned. Heck, we regularly shot bows back in the 80's and early 90's with over 8" brace heights, 80+lbs and light arrows over 400fps and even hitting 425fps in local "fastest bow contests"---now they're just utilizing the same concepts on shorter brace bows with lighter poundage and heavier arrows, but it is still the same concepts only with newer materials--really is no biggie, anyone with a brain can build a fast bow IMHO. I still have a "breathed on" 8.25" 38" ATA bow from the mid 90's that will shoot over 340fps all day long at close to IBO legal. But I shoot a bow that does 285-290 instead because it handles much better even tho it only has a 7.25" brace. Hmmmm.

Now---

To build a fast bow that is quiet--- That takes a little more doing, but basically if you have all of the cards in place it is not all that difficult either--still has to have a nasty draw force curve and lower brace, still have to polish axles and prestress limbs and use the "tricks", and you have to also incorporate parallel design. That's pretty much it tho, again, no real biggie. Bowtech is slowly coming around to the realization with their Liberty (best selling bow for them this year) in that you do NOT need the speed---guys will buy a smooth, quiet bow that puts the arrow where it belongs hands-down over a speed bow, and that's the bottom line. Just like the fact that most of us drive trucks, tho a few may still have a vette or shelby in the garage (but not all that many) and they only drive them on the weekends...same thing here with the speed bows. Good to cover the niche if you can, but not totally necessary because manufacturers will sell many bows regardless.

Speed will continue to go up over time anyway in the industry due to newer, stronger, lighter materials with less friction coefficients, and I figure why shoot things that are not comfortable or give up handling and shootability just for a few more fps by having to use shorter brace heights or whatever?? Doesn't make sense to me anymore even tho I used to be one of those speed junkies too 20 years ago! ;)JMHO, Pinwheel 12

RE: What is the fastest bow??????

Hawgz.....Do you know all the details of that "Challenge"?

I'd hardly call a 30" bow that NOBODY was allowed to shoot , handle, or measure, with special limbs,non-stock cable and string shot out of a machine immediately after full draw VS. a 29" bow that was pulled at random straight from a box and then held at full draw on the shooting machine for almost a full minute before shooting.......a "Shoot-off".
Trust me, that bow was built "Special" just for that purpose..... and it worked.

Mathews was smart to have a "Special" bow along for just such an occasion because everyone who doesn't know the exact details just hears the bottom line, that Mathews was the fastest........, but you had better believe that there was no such "Challenge" for 2004. :D It would have been a blood bath.[:-][8D]

But that is neither here nor there......and I doubt we will ever see that again because from now on the "Other" party will be ready for it.

It's still the BK2 !
But I recently found out that Mathews is offering the Black Max2 with a Turbo cam @ 50 % let off this year and it's supposed to be in the upper 340's right there close with a BK2 !

Before you Bowtech fanatics jump me.......I realize the BK2 has a 1/4 " more bh and more let off......so read my first sentence again !! ;)

Hmmmm, quiet, fast, 7 7/8" brace heigh, accurate, forgiving, recoil free, very low vibration. Sounds like my 03 Patriot Dually, shooting 318 at IBO specs at 61#, 29". And my 04 Pro 40 Dually at the same specs is equal to the Pat. Then there's the Patriot single, even quieter. So you can have the speed, without scaring everything within 30 miles. And any of these bows will hog the X ring. They just fill it up faster than the competition. ;)

RE: What is the fastest bow??????

MATT ...It wasnt a "special" bow ...You can buy it at any Mathews dealer.....;)

Unlike the one Kevin had this year that only he has......

But Spot Hogg was there so No tricks were envolved...;)

But see what is funny Why did he bring a bow that you cant buy(mass) to a shootout the already lost...:D

But I also know that he has a plane ticket for Mathews plant when he gets ready....;)

Matt....Then you also know that both bows were measured for draw and letoff before the test...And after the BK was adjusted to the correct letoff everything was on the up and up......

SA......String me along all you wont I know more about it than you would like me to know..;)

But this is old news who cares anyway.....Just letting the guy know the whole story.....To many one sided stories here anyway.....;)

Hawgz, nobody was allowed to shoot, or handle, the BM. It was shot from a machine only. I'll bet for every BM you'll see 50 BKIIs (probably more, I've never seen a BM at a 3D shoot). Why is that? Because the BKII is a shootable bow, without a machine. Although some people I've seen shoot them are close. ;)

RE: What is the fastest bow??????

Anymore when I'm looking for a new bow, I'm looking for top speeds combined with the highest brace height. I load my hunting bow down with heavy arrows and solid broadheads for total penetration in deer, hogs and in '04 bear. The heavy arrows scrub off some of the speed and lots of noise and vibration normally associated with light arrows. Still,, for 3D's with arrows around 450 grains my set up is running right with most all other bows with light arrows. Can't wait to try those heavy Easton Axis carbon shafts in a stiff crosswind at 280 fps;)

RE: What is the fastest bow??????

Bowtech Black Knight and Mathews Black Max will be close to eachother in speed, with a little advantage towards the Bowtech.
Another question is if you can actually shoot it at those speeds. I know a man with a 70# Black Max at 30" draw, but he is shooting heavy alu's going trough the air like trown sticks. So his speed will be not so high after all. I have been shooting a Mathews Z-Max at the World Championships, believing that speed was everything. Not! Lately i found out my top speed will be somewhere around 295 -300 and i prefer the higher braceheights with this speed. As soon as we do tournaments shooting the fasterst instead of spots, i go back to the speedbows.

RE: What is the fastest bow??????

Pat--

Those are all listed ADVERTISED speeds on Hunters' Friend, not actual tested speeds done by an independent testing facility, and I'm willing to bet that many if not most of them will NOT hit those stated speeds at IBO specs (30" 350g arrow, 70lbs) when tested at true AMO drawlengths and by a non-biased independent testing company.;)

Example--

Fastest BK2 I've ever personally tested ran 342-346fps at 5.25" brace height thru the two chronos we have here.(older model BK2-- new ones won't do it at 5.75" brace through the same chronos tho, about 6fps slower) Screaming bow tho regardless, no doubt!;) Black Max tested here through the same chronos wasn't even close in stock form, and it ran 328-333fps. Both bows were admittedly nasty to draw,(twins are easier) with super-low brace heights, and both were torquey due to them. The Patriot or the LX for instance both offer a much more stable and shootable platform IMHO, yet still offer decent speeds.

All depends on what you're looking for I guess, but the BK2 is still the fastest bow in the land to date tho at IBO legal setup if reading the chrono is your primary objective..;) Good shooting, Pinwheel 12

BowTech_Shooter 03-13-2004 06:54 AM

RE: What is the fastest bow??????

That means we even advertise a faster bow than the others...;):D

The fastest BK2 I've personally tested was an out of the box 2002, 5 1/2" brace, 30 1/4" draw, 71 lbs., 351 grain arrow that shoots 351 consistantly. I suppose if you took away the 1/4" extra draw it would be down around 348 fps or so... BTW, I still have this bow hangin in my workshop...;):D

Don't get me wrong here, I'm no speed junkie, if it has speed cool, if not that's cool with me too. Heck, I'm shooting a 50 lb. Pro 40 FC for indoor and 60 lb. Pro 40 FC for 3-D this year (provided I get to shoot some 3-D's other than Redding like last year) ;):D...

RE: What is the fastest bow??????

My only question is...Is it true that the BK2 can shoot flat out for over 30 yards on a standard arrow? The advantage of that to me would be significant. I mean you could literaly use one pin for 10-30 yards. To me the elimination of not having to judge distance would be the only advantage.

I've been wondering who makes the fastest bow too. So, I got a Hoyt, BowTech, Mathews, Darton, Martin and PSE. Set up my chronograph. Threw each bow over the chronograph 5 times and averaged the readings. No difference. All bows averaged around 73 fps. Unfortunately, I was not able to get my hands on a carbon risered High Country, but we all know carbon is faster than aluminum, now don't we.

Wow! that's 480 some ft/lbs of KE!! I think you could hunt with that. Hey what bow made the least amount of noise when it hit the floor? All that ke doesn't do you any good if it makes too much noise, right? How much did they whistle while flying thru the air also? Could I use a mechanical with that set up for better accuracy? And what was the draw length and poundage of each bow you tested?;)

I don't think the high country bow was a very fair comparison. I think I could get 330 out of my mighty might at 26 inches and 60 lbs of draw if I shot a light enough arrow out of it. Heck I got 280 or so out of my darton yukon with a 26.5 inch draw at 70 lbs. I think it was a 300grn arrow. And it's only rated at 298 for IBO

I don't believe mathews makes anything like a BK2 that you can buy from them. Sure they have the black max, but it isn't as fast and it shoots nothing like the BK2. I don't think mathews is as concerned with speed as they are with having a smooth shock free bow. At least that's what they always say. I however don't own a shop and haven't tested all of them.

Arthur, you crack me up sometimes.

Hey Stalker...I have an 03 BK set at 64# shooting a 405 grain finished ACC with quickspins and a 75 grain Rocket Ultimate steel.

1 pin from 15 to 30 yards, gap for 35 and 2nd pin dead on at 40.
I use a janky Cobra bantam sight on it and it only has one track...the pins don't get any closer together.

I have to aim juts a hair low at 5 and 10 yards but I will say this...all the misses I make will be windage based misses:D
