Well said Doughboy!! I couldn't agree more. Put me on the list cause I'm not getting it I guess.
My most enjoyable moment this past season was taking my son out for the first time. It was the last week of bowseason. My son, a couple buddies, and myself went out in the morning to a different property and moved some stands around to prepare for gun season. We had my son with us. He got his workout for the day and got a whiff of some of the things aside from hunting like war stories, scoutin, sign, stand location, etc........ It was a great educational experience for him and he never ran out of question which was really cool.
Then I took him alone and sat in a natural ground blind with him for the afternoon hunt. I guess I worked him too hard, because I felt a big thud on my shoulder and it was him falling asleep. I sat there til dark (1 1/2 hours or so since he crashed). that was the best hunting day of my life.
My second best memory this season wasn't a kill or a monster buck sighting. I was in a ground blind (have a thing for the ground) and I had a young doe bed down about 15 yards from me. I sat there for over an hour and she never knew I was there. She got up and just about stepped on my feet as she passed by me. That was way too cool.
So I guess I don't get it either.

I've been hunting for 24 years and just found out from this post I'm not doing it right.
When I go out and see nothing for three or more hunts in a row and then finally see a deer, I consider it a successful hunt whether I get a shot or not - guess I was wrong.
When I go out and have an owl land in the branch next to me, walk toward me to figure me out, then jump out of his feathers when the "tree" starts talking to him, guess I was wrong.
When I go out and watch a little six or fork for 20 minutes browsing around, guess I was wrong.
When I go out with my son and we see only a squirrel, or 3 does 30 yards in front of us, guess I was wrong.
I'm lost.

All I can do is laugh right now

I think you aren't getting it.
Of course, you could be hunting a TV show--high fence--pet a pet property. Then maybe, I get it.

fieldmouse--do you live in Illinois, Iowa, or Kansas? I don't. And no one in my circle of hunting friends (a LOT of guys who hunt different farms) even SAW a 160 class this year . . . but we all took deer. I took 5 myself.
We don't get it.
We don't get it.
