RE: Heating Carbon arrows?

Most inserts are glued in with two part epoxy on carbons, and it doesn't react like hot melt glues.Indexing vanes with broadheads is not nessessary.Like BGfisher said though if you are that concerned do what he recomended.Bill D>

I definitely would not recommend it. I have seen folks "get away with it" but why take the chance?

As for the fletching/broadhead blade alignment issue....I once did it myself but found that it did not really compensate for a bow that was not well tuned or for arrow components that were not correctly in line.

I wouldn't apply heat to a carbon shaft. But what I do is use a gun cleaning rod that fits the insert thread. Apply heat to the cleaning rod and the heat will transfer to the insert and then glue. Apply a slight continual pulling pressure to the rod and shaft (using pliers on the rod). Once the glue is soft enough to release, the insert will come out and minimizing the time any heat is applied to the shaft. If the "glue" is two-part epoxy, you're probably screwed and will not be able to do anything. The shaft will get too hot. If it's to align the broadhead with the vanes only (and this is another topic), IMHO, it's not worth the time and serves no improvement on arrow flight.

Ummm. I must have gotten lucky. The reason I did it was not to aline (?) the vanes and blades, but to straighten out the tip. It was off center and spinning wildly.

like mossy oak hunter said, put a heated field tip in the insert part way, heat again, screw all the way down, and heat the tip a little more, eventually it will slip a little and you can pull the insert out.

Been doing it for years, no problems at all.

The field tip trick works fine...just go easy, don't over heat it. Keep testing the field tip with a pair of pliers to see when the insert is loosened up.
