I got my 2nd bowkilled buck this weekend. No monster, but a trophy to me. I had seen two nice bucks that look to be the offspring of the two monsters I had seen on this land last year. I hadn' t seen the monsters, so I thought these offspring might be the new kings. One of them, a heavy massed eight pointer slipped by at 40 yards, a little too far for a comfortable shot for me. Many folks in West TN are saying the rut is in full swing, but the ones on this land don' t seem to be swinging. He was directly downwind of my Code Blue estrous, but fed along and paid it no attention. He fed back into his bedding area and passed a doe coming out, but he didn' t pay attention to her either. No response to the can or grunts. I was disappointed in not getting a shot opportunity.
A little later an average(for this area) 8 pointer came out from the same spot. He is behind my stand and keeps easing back and forth(real fun with a bow trying to figure what side to be on). He never winded me, despite being directly downwind. I had my upper section of the climber a little high, so I had to fight to get the bow in position and clear of the arms. I release at 23-25 yards, but hear a ding. I hit him higher and further back than I liked. He didn' t know he had been hit and just took a couple of steps. Then he gets wobbly and tries to run. He does a face-plant into a tree and dies. When I get down to investigate, he has broken his jaw and knocked out several teeth. I guessed his weight to be around 130-140 on the hoof.
I' ve tried posting a pic, but my Internet Explorer at work is buggy. I may have to email the pic to somebody to post for me. Don' t expect too much, he' s no midwest monster, but he' s a trophy to me. The pic may not be too great either as my dad took it and is a notoriously bad photographer.
I forgot to post why I was lucky. I found out that my cam had hit my stand arm and that is what the ding was. I could see a mark on the stand where my cam had been next to it. I was lucky I hit him at all, much less a good clean kill.
