I shot one about 4 years ago in NY with the shotgun that had 6 inches of shaft and a Muzzy buried in his spine. He was walking and feeding fine. There was the slightest of discoloration of the meat an inch each side of the shaft. When we examined him in the field he had like a tiny scab over the entrance hole. We just thought he' d been horned by another buck. When we skinned him we found the arrow.

nice deer and story, ben. are you in the military? do you happen to use outback taxidermy in triangle? great pics, btw.

john in virginia

No I am not Military, Johnny Civilian here. Just hunt the Base and have for just over 16 years, Worked for their hunting program for about 9 of those years.
I have not used Outback Taxidermy, although I know many that do. I have mine right around the corner from him at Labans. Laban is a good guy and does very well with deer heads. I was looking for Outback but he moved I guess. You bowhunt, I see the Woodbridge Address?

The attention to detail in the pics, the way you display it and the obvious amount of work you put into it really bring out the beauty of that coffee mug.

NJ_bowhntr awesome aint it????:D:D:D

Good point about the bone, my thought train was on the hide and flesh. Another thing to consider is the muzzy blades are surgically sharp, so that would of been a very clean wound.

I' ve been back and forth off the boards for a while with being down in Vegas now and the long commutes with work. I should have some pictures in a week or so of the caribou I took three weeks ago. :) He might of weighed as much as your deer, but he was only a little 4 pointer. [&:]:D

I just picked up the jaw bone from the taxidermist, so I will age the deer tomorrow, but to think someone may have shot him before and he may have never gotten to reach his size when I took him. I am sure I took him before his prime also.

Good job Ben! A nice story and more evidence of the amazing healing powers that deer have. There have been a couple other posts in the last month or so showing pictures similar to yours. It amazes me how they can heal up like that. I wonder how much down time the deer spends after something as traumatic as that? I would venture a guess that deer from a warm locale have a lot better chance to heal up than their northern counterparts do. Just my opinion. What do you think? Congratulations all the way around for you and your buddies.

B.T.W......That six point..............He would be an illegal buck here in western Pennsylvania.[:o] We have to have 4 points on one side for a buck to be legal on this end of the state. Take care...Jim

Jimimac,
Similar deal where that 6 was shot, We have certain areas on the Base that are labled QDM ares, the standard set forth was this, A deer must have atleast 4 points on one side (4 legal points, must be atleast 1 inch off main beam) OR the deer must have a 15 1/2 inch spread, either or in these areas need to be met in order to shoot a buck in QDM areas. The North side of the Base is a free for all, with any deer is allowed to be taken reguardless. That 6 point had a 17 inch spread. It was shot in a QDM area, however my buck ,it was taken in a " free for all" zone.

outback taxidermy only moved about a block from thier old location (even on same side of the street).
i live in woodbridge now but i did live in stafford off rt 610, behind old giant, from 1998-2002. that 610 traffic is a MESS!
i bowhunt in loudoun county. as you know, they have a lot of deer. but thier genetics are not the best. i mainly hunt fields. sometimes i go as guest to a hunt club in fauquier co.
to be honest with you, im triyng to become a horn hunter instead of a meat hunter. but i get discouraged a bit.
sounds like you have belvior down pat( which is great). thats why i figured you were in army. ive heard the give perferred treatment to non-civialians
nice website of yours
