The one I killed last year went about 50 yards up hill before it died.

I would not say that all those things are not true at one time or another but " never" and " always" are not the best terms.

I have trailed and recover wounded Deer that traveled up hill.

Gut shot Deer don' t seem to do anything other than attempt to escape their pursuer and rest or bed down. I have never seen one go to water. Some might but I' ve never seen it.

Deer bed down in a secure area that provides cover. In the bitter winters of northern WI they will bed on a south slope for the warmth of the sun or to catch the thermals. On a hot fall day they' ll bed on Northern slopes.

Im not sure on the spike thing but I don' t think it is true in every case.

Now Im 55 yoa and have been Deer hunting since Im 12 yrs old. I heard all those same things as I grew up and still do from hunters of all ages. I just smile and say something to the effect of, " Is that so?" I think I started doing that when I was 16

Some of my favorites are, the really black swamp buck, or Does taste so much better than Buckand that Buck polished his antlers until they are white, (all deer antlers start white, any other color is staining from the dryed blood and the bark/sap/fluids of trees they rub them on).
It all makes for interesting camp talk but nothing more.

You do know that even if you cut a snakes head off the don' t die until sunset

I' d say they are all old wives tales Most hit deer will head to water, deer will definetly go up hill after a shot as far as bedding I think they will bed where the feel safe regardless of the direction. Wind probably has more to do with that than anything.
