Default A few questions from a novice bowhunter.

Hello. I've been bow hunting for about two years now and before this season starts I'd like to find some advice or information about bows and bowhunting.

My first question is, if I buy a cheap bow for example around $300-$400, could I possibly make it shoot like the more expensive bows by buying the best sights, arrow rest, arrows, etc? I unfortunately lost my bowtech bow in a fire accident, and don't want to spend over $1,000 again on a new bow.

Second question, what is the recommended fps for hunting bear?

Third question, what is the pros and cons of a dual cam vs. single cam?

Last question, how dangerous is it to hunt in bear country without a firearm, and any advice that might help me on my first bear hunt?

I will start with bow hunting bears it is best to carry a backup fire arm if legal where you intend to hunt. Not sure of the laws every where but here in Alberta the bow must pull 40lbs at 28inches and shoot a 24 inch arrow.
When it comes to dual cams versus single or now the hybrid cams I believe the single and hybrids are the way to go. The old thought was you needed dual cams for speed not true any more.
There are several package bows out there that are good quality and shoot really well. In fact at my local achery shop I saw a Bow Tech carbon package for 800 dollars a real steal. My advice would be to check around and see what kind of upper end package deals you can find. Yhese will save you money in the long run as they will come with better sights and rests than cheaper bow packages. A friend of mine just got a PSE Evolve package and it is a nice setup and very quiet. Hope I was of some help.

I'll addd some more here
30+ yrs of bow hunting under me!

the PRICE of the bow doesn't really have anything to do with HOW accurate the bow is(as far as hunting is concerned)
if its a modern bow, and NOT falling apart or damaged, its the SHOOTER behind it that matters more than the model make or price tag
bow hunting is ALL about placing an arrow/broadhead in a vital, and the animal bleeding out
folks have been killing things this way since bows were invented with sticks and strings
WAY too many folks today get caught up in marketing BS, and pushing crap down folsk throats to make so many think NEW this or THAT, will make you shoot better
and its NOT true
you look at the scores of the PRO shooters of yrs back and scores now
there is NOT some huge differnce

shooter's form and practice is what makes ANY bow accurate
and then KNOWING your limits( RANGE, and what shots to take and when to PASS, even if its IN range) bad angles lead to a LOT of lost game!

as for MIN FPS, ANY legal bow will be enough, BUT again, then you have to factor in distance, as ALL arrows LOOSE energy and speed at distance gets farther from the bow!
SO< even if I GAVE you a number here, that doesn't mean it would work at a farther distance , BUT would work at a closer distance
MOST ALL game dept, have standards on a bows MIN poundage, and that basically means it is Proven TO KILL CLEANLY, when used , but only AT RANGES IT CAN DO SO!
imo< 90% of bow hunter should NOT be shooting at game past 50 yards and a LOT more should be stayiong under 40(heck many under 30)
as FAR too many DON"T have the time or commitment to practice eneough, they see guys in TV doing it
take a few shots at range and think OK< I TOO can do it!
NOT bashing, just stating what I have seen,(had a gun shop for yrs and close friend with a bow shop and we talked and shot together often and with HUNDREDS of others hunters/shooter , so I seen a LOT more than most I will bet due to the jobs I have had)
PEOPLE today more than ever THINK they can BUY skill, they spend HIGH $$ on products and then that leads them to THINK the expensive product some how makes them magically GOOD with it!

NOT so, its skill that makes you good at ANYTHING and its PRACTICE that gets you skills, that and TIME, NO experts born over night no matter what you buy!

NEXT as for hunting in bear country, this to me is a loaded question as what do you consider BEAR COUNTRY??
just where bears live, or in more remote places where a bear MIGHT think your more part of the food chain, like SUPER remote places
and what type of bears you talking, Grizzly. Blacks, or Polar?
they all behave differently
HOWEVER, minus Polar bears, odds are SUPER low of a bear attacking you in MOST all places
we HUMANS STINK< meaning we smell BAD to them m and they tend to avoid us before we even knew we were near one
MINUS true wilderness area's I have NEVER felt the need to have a GUN on me in bear country, in fear of one attacking me that is
I tend to believe in being prepared, rather than needing and not having

BUT your state LAWS might answer this question better, as NOT all states allow you carry a firearm while Archery hunting!
the most dangerous animal in the woods in a SCARED ONE, be it a bear(which is where MOST folks get attacked, got too close before bear knew you were there and it reacted out of FEAR, YES fear, attacks like this tend to be defensive attacks and are fast and doubt a gun would do most any good!, as TOO fast for most to react in time

second Dangerous critter in the woods is a starving one, as BOTH of these are highly unpredictable critters , normal rational behavior is OUT the window types

MY advice would be learn some bear smarts for the area's your hunting in, Knowledge is power you know
and MAYBE bear spray would be better suited to you than a gun too! its been known to work better in more cases than a gun!
wounding a pissed off bear with a poor shot ain't helping maters
peper spray seems to make them PAUSE and re think what there doing more than gun shot in a NON fatal area,
the gun shot in a NON fatal area seems to just piss them off mroe and I get it
if you were in a fight, a puch tends to make you want to return one!

being blinded or loosing vision some what, tends to make you back up HOPING you can see better to keep going or Flee!
simple logic at work here too!

OH and again, as for bow, ALL NEW bows today are better than 99% of bows 10 yrs ago, even TOP of the line bows of 10+ yrs ago
so bottom of the barrel NOW< its like TOP of the line yrs back
they ALL kill if you do your part !

Default Heck yeah

So I’m going to make this answer as short as possible. RTH (Ready to hunt) these days will harvest almost anything you can shoot, including bear. Even in your price range. So yes they will. However you need to pull heavy poundage, a 40lbs pull just is not gonna get it done. Good luck, any other questions email me or hit me up on insta ridge_grunt.
