hey guys, i am new to the post. but not to hunting. i was wondering. i am able to hunt a new peice of property that has a ton of deer. and some very good bucks. it is mainly overgrown fields with rows of woods tracing the fields. i have already shot 4 deer this season, but all have been small bucks. but there is a big boy that has been kidding with me all season. how do i need to hunt him. on the edges of the fields or get in the woods after him???? any advice would be greatly appreciated.

sounds like a place I hunt. A large crop farm with woods tracing the fields. I shot 2 large bucks last year, 1 with a bow probably a P&Yer, and 9 point 17.5" spread with a rifle. Both were shot in the morning hunting the bedding areas.

To get on the big bucks I would say you gotta go in after them. I have never taken a buck on a field edge, some does but never any bucks. I rarely hunt the field edges any more I have much much more success in the timber. JMO

c903, yes i do eat a lot of venison. almost everyday. but i have given 2 of the deer away to a family that needs them. i do this every year. but i am through with the meat thing and am looking for a rack now. i might shoot a few does to thin out the herd, but i garantee that none of the meat goes to waste, and it doesn' t hurt the herd. we have way to many does.

sounds like a good spot, but if you kill all the young ones what are you going to hunt next year. if it was me i would find out where he' s bedding and the does are bedding. intersect him from bedding to feeding. good luck

depending on where you are the rut is close! if you can find his bed thats a morning spot, about 100 yards away on the trail in,,,, the field can be great afternoon spot about 50 yards in from it, like a knoll where he would stand to look out there for does! good luck,,,,, wherever you r!
