That depends on what you mean by the rut. There isnt any one day that it starts. I feel the rut starts with the Bucks breaking up and not running together. Then the scrape making starts(which is were we are at right now) then the cruising stage starts. Then the chasing of the does starts. Then the does come in and the actual breeding starts. Know just remember that all of these stages could happen to a particular buck or doe earlier or later then most. I am just referring to what most of the deer are doing. I am in Northeastern Pa and I have not seen the buck cruising yet but I have started to see alot of scrapes and solo bucks instead of bucks running together. I feel that the best time here in Pa is from October 31st to November 10. After that the bucks seem to be chasing the doe hard and it is hard to get them to stop or leave a hot doe. Good luck!!

I hunt in SW Ohio and the timing of the rut is just about the same as it is in PA. I saw 2 HUGE rubs, and 2 scrapes on Sat. night. It looks as though we could see the woods really come alive here soon!!!

I saw a couple bucks still running together this past weekend (not near close enough for a shot) still not too many rubs or scrapes here.

The last two weeks of archery is the best time IMO to tag a big buck. The cruising/chasing will be starting around the middle of next week and getting hot and heavy until the majority of the breeding is done around the 14-20th of November. That' s the way it' s been in my area of NW PA for the last several years.

I live in MD right on the border of PA, from my experience the core of the rut starts around the second week of November. I prefer to hunt the week before that when the bucks are cruising and chasing, the deer are very responsive to grunting and rattling during this time. Looking at the weather forcast though we are looking at daytime temps in the low 70' s for the next week and a half this may slow down the all day activity that you usually experience with the rut, i' m hoping they are wrong and we end up getting some colder weather.
