Sit or stand??
 

I read a article written By Chuck Adams where he said " Most successfull tree stand hunters shoot while still sitting" . I have a Api grand slam stand that has the bar in front to make it a sit down stand up climber. I always assumed I' d just stand up if I was approached by a deer, but that may not always be possible.
The last deer I shot I was only in my stand for 8 min. and didn' t even have time to sit down so it was a standing shot.

Has anyone tried to shoot while sitting with this type of stand ? or do you try your best to stand up? Thanks in advance Jim

With my buckshot bigshot mag, I can draw my bow while sitting, and put the lower cam out over the safety bar to the side, but as far as shooting that way, it isn' t much comfortable, so I usually try to stand, but like you said that isn' t always possible.

I hate to disagree with someone like Chuck Adams but I have been successful standing up while shooting, and most of my shots from a stand are while standing up! I rarely have had to take a shot while sitting. But that is part of the reason I like a stand with an open front and few restrictions along the sides..just in case.

Practicing shooting from both positions is a good idea though.

To each their own on this one.
If hunting from a climber it depends if you can sit down or not. If from a ladder stand, treehouse or any other elevated point there are issues there too.

It comes down to the deer.
If sitting or standing and having to change positions:
Does that make your stand squeek? Does the deer pic up that motion? Is the deer approaching from your side of the tree or the opposite side? How close the deer is to you?

I shoot both sitting and standing. Depends on the deer, where they are approaching from and if I think I can do it without getting busted. I normally just stay as still as possible and shoot from whatever position I am in. Practice the different positions and get a comfort and confidence level with those positions.

I have a summit cobra and I have shot deer both sitting and standing...i prefer to stand, but if i dont have time, then i just shoot sitting down

Standing up allows you a lot more freedom of movement if need be. If you' re sitting down and a deer doesn' t stop in the shooting lane you' re hoping he will, then what? Rotating your body for a sitting shot is pretty near impossible unless you' re a contortionist - which I don' t think many of us are.

Personally, I' ve shot all my deer while standing. I practice sitting shots just in case I get caught off guard and need to make one, but it' s not my shot of choice.

As for Chuck Adams - eh, he' s over rated. Read some of his books and you' ll get a better idea of a lot of the questionable shots he' s taken at animals over the years. All in the name of the quest for the " Super Slam" :eek:

The article didn' t say most bowhunters, it said he talked to about 20 successful bowhunters and most of them shot sitting down. I' ll stick with standing shots, much more maneuverability.

I stand 90 % of the time while in my stand, all of my shots have been while standing, i always feel that as soon as i sit down thats when one will come, i just stand. I usually set until it starts breaking day, in the morning and then in the afternoon i usually set until like the last 1 1/2 before dark then i stand..

If I have time and the deer is not aware of me, I will stand for the shot. This gives me the most manuability. If the deer is on me quick or is alert, I will take the shot sitting down. I have an open front climber, making that shot easier. I did have a close in climber and was able to shoot several deer while sitting in it if the deer came in on the left side of me. I practice shooting sitting, standing and kneeling. You never know what type of shot you will get.

I shot a doe last week from my Summit Viper XLS and I was sitting (the first time I' ve ever shot from my treestand while sitting). I would prefer to shoot standing up but I know if I get caught sitting down, I can still make the shot.
