Sit or stand??
I read a article written By Chuck Adams where he said " Most successfull tree stand hunters shoot while still sitting" . I have a Api grand slam stand that has the bar in front to make it a sit down stand up climber. I always assumed I' d just stand up if I was approached by a deer, but that may not always be possible.
The last deer I shot I was only in my stand for 8 min. and didn' t even have time to sit down so it was a standing shot. Has anyone tried to shoot while sitting with this type of stand ? or do you try your best to stand up? Thanks in advance Jim |
RE: Sit or stand??
With my buckshot bigshot mag, I can draw my bow while sitting, and put the lower cam out over the safety bar to the side, but as far as shooting that way, it isn' t much comfortable, so I usually try to stand, but like you said that isn' t always possible.

RE: Sit or stand??
I hate to disagree with someone like Chuck Adams but I have been successful standing up while shooting, and most of my shots from a stand are while standing up! I rarely have had to take a shot while sitting. But that is part of the reason I like a stand with an open front and few restrictions along the sides..just in case.
Practicing shooting from both positions is a good idea though. |
RE: Sit or stand??
To each their own on this one.
If hunting from a climber it depends if you can sit down or not. If from a ladder stand, treehouse or any other elevated point there are issues there too. It comes down to the deer. If sitting or standing and having to change positions: Does that make your stand squeek? Does the deer pic up that motion? Is the deer approaching from your side of the tree or the opposite side? How close the deer is to you? I shoot both sitting and standing. Depends on the deer, where they are approaching from and if I think I can do it without getting busted. I normally just stay as still as possible and shoot from whatever position I am in. Practice the different positions and get a comfort and confidence level with those positions. |
RE: Sit or stand??
I have a summit cobra and I have shot deer both sitting and standing...i prefer to stand, but if i dont have time, then i just shoot sitting down

RE: Sit or stand??
Standing up allows you a lot more freedom of movement if need be. If you' re sitting down and a deer doesn' t stop in the shooting lane you' re hoping he will, then what? Rotating your body for a sitting shot is pretty near impossible unless you' re a contortionist - which I don' t think many of us are.
Personally, I' ve shot all my deer while standing. I practice sitting shots just in case I get caught off guard and need to make one, but it' s not my shot of choice. As for Chuck Adams - eh, he' s over rated. Read some of his books and you' ll get a better idea of a lot of the questionable shots he' s taken at animals over the years. All in the name of the quest for the " Super Slam" |
RE: Sit or stand??
The article didn' t say most bowhunters, it said he talked to about 20 successful bowhunters and most of them shot sitting down. I' ll stick with standing shots, much more maneuverability.

RE: Sit or stand??
I stand 90 % of the time while in my stand, all of my shots have been while standing, i always feel that as soon as i sit down thats when one will come, i just stand. I usually set until it starts breaking day, in the morning and then in the afternoon i usually set until like the last 1 1/2 before dark then i stand..

RE: Sit or stand??
If I have time and the deer is not aware of me, I will stand for the shot. This gives me the most manuability. If the deer is on me quick or is alert, I will take the shot sitting down. I have an open front climber, making that shot easier. I did have a close in climber and was able to shoot several deer while sitting in it if the deer came in on the left side of me. I practice shooting sitting, standing and kneeling. You never know what type of shot you will get.

RE: Sit or stand??
I shot a doe last week from my Summit Viper XLS and I was sitting (the first time I' ve ever shot from my treestand while sitting). I would prefer to shoot standing up but I know if I get caught sitting down, I can still make the shot.

RE: Sit or stand??
Like many others have said, it just depends on the situation. I have shot from the sitting position and would rather do it that way but sometimes it isn' t possible. I sit most of the time in stand. I' m less fidgety that way and I think the less movement the better. Sometimes you have to stand to make the shot and sometimes you have to watch them walk away:(

RE: Sit or stand??
I stand to shoot always. Its worked so far for me that way, and I feel much more comfortable doing so.
|
RE: Sit or stand??
I never even sit in my stand. I have a summit viper and when I climb up, I stand until I climb down. I got burned by a deer back in the eighties and never sat again. So I guess all my shats are and will be standing up.
I drilled a doe a few years ago in a ground blind sitting on a milk crate. Greg |
RE: Sit or stand??
Your allowed to sit in the stand. After all this time I find out that thing is a seat and not a shelf for my back pack. :D I stand most of the time in my stand just so I don' t get caught sitting out of position.

RE: Sit or stand??
If you use a sit down/stand up climber, and you decide to shoot from a sitting position, make sure your bow isn' t on the inside of that thing. You release... BANG... the limb hits the bar around you. Not a good thing. One of my buddies learned the hard way.

RE: Sit or stand??
I stand if possible. It gives you more options. You can bend, crouch, lean, or do whatever you have to do to get your arrow to clear sticks, or to get the pin into the opening you need. But, a sitting shot is a good thing to practice in case you need to do it.

RE: Sit or stand??
i only shoot standing up.
my viper is the best stand there is. i believe that you can only stand up to shoot in this stand. i had two does 20 yards away i shot missed they stood there, got another arrow i was standing doing all this moving and trying to get my arrow nocked never even saw me up in the tree. standing is a much better shooting position. go deep hunt hard.;) |
RE: Sit or stand??
I prefer standing, but you just never know. Last year I had nice 10 point come from behind me, he stood under the tree then moved forward and was starting to veer off to the left (bad direction in this case) I mouth grunted, stopped him and took him from the sitting position. I felt it much more important to not spook the animal and remain seated and think through the shot. It is a slightly different feel (anchor point) when sitting, but a slight adjustment and it' s pretty much the same...to me at least. I will typically take a few practice shots sitting. I' m glad I did last year! :-)

RE: Sit or stand??
I have always shot while standing. But I haved practiced shooting while sitting down, and feel confident I could shoot that way if I needed to. I sit in my stand most of the time, and if I see a deer approach I try to wait until it walks behind a tree before I stand up.

RE: Sit or stand??
I too shoot while standing. I have practiced while sitting but I' ve yet to be in a situation where I couldn' t stand.
|
RE: Sit or stand??
i shoot standing as well. my climber has that same bar, and I usually have to stand to shoot.
|
RE: Sit or stand??
I always stand to shoot--haven' t even practiced sitting ' cause I don' t plan on shooting that way. All but one of my stands are fixed position hang-on type. The Climber is an Ol' Man and has the footrest/gunrest bar which I thought would be so nice. WRONG! The footrest' s comfort is far outweighed by the rails getting in the way at very innopportune times.
|
RE: Sit or stand??
I never stand to shoot unless i absolutely have to in order to make a shot. I use nothing but loc-ons and i would say that 90% of my shots are taken while sitting.

RE: Sit or stand??
I prefer to stand!!!

RE: Sit or stand??
I have only shot one deer while sitting and I would actually prefer to shoot from a sitting position more often. But, how many times do you have deer that are straight ahead of you that provide a decent shot? Not too often. I found that sitting and shooting from that position gives me better control and that there is less to worry about as far as your stand squeking or your foot moving, etc. Pulling back was quite easy and it felt like I was shooting from my recliner!!
But, 95% of my deer have been harvested from standing. I have almost 360 degree range and mobility when in a standing position. I usually end up standing for the first 2 hours and last 2 hours of my hunt. Sit when I get extremely cold or legs get tired. I use a Summit stand and most often position the seat/upper portion of stand on the other side of the tree so it' s out of the way and just use my platform. This gives me great 360 degree rotation without any obstructions in the way! |
RE: Sit or stand??
Do both, and practice both. I prefer to sit but you can' t always get the perfect angle when sitting.
|
RE: Sit or stand??
I' ve taken deer either way. Most of them were while standing, but two were seated while the deer were on my left. I usually stand since you never know which way the deer will be coming from. I don' t think I could take a seated shot to my right.

RE: Sit or stand??
Got more replies than I expected, thanks. I' ll do what Iv' e done in the past that is Stand in the morning, sit thru the day and stand in the late afternoon. I haven' t tried to shoot while sitting from this stand yet. The only thing in my yard that I can put a stand on is a phone pole. I' ll put it low and give it a try latter this weekend.I agree with what Pahunter said, " watch the bar!" the bar is what scares me espically with a Q2XL. Thanks Jim

RE: Sit or stand??
I' ve probably shot more deer sitting than standing. Once the adrenaline starts pumping, I find it easier to remain rock steady when seated. Besides, I' m old and lazy!
|
RE: Sit or stand??
I much prefer standing as well!! You' ll loose many shooting oppurtunities while sittting!!
