coyotes, to kill or not to kill, your take!
last year i had a coyote sit about 30 yards away from me and i didnt shoot him, i was low on arrows,4 left, and that factored in my decision not to but i probably should have?? mixed emotions! my buddy wants to stuff one for his office and they have eaten alot of cats in my parts!

RE: coyotes, to kill or not to kill, your take!
I have shot 2 coyotes in the past 3 years with my bow while deer hunting. A coyote killed one of my uncles cats 3 years ago and I promised him when I hunt there if I see a coyote I would shoot it for him. I have saw quite a few other coyotes at other places I hunt as well but never shot at any of them, just at my uncles.

RE: coyotes, to kill or not to kill, your take!
I sure would. I' m not sure about NY' s laws, but i think it' s legal to shoot them year round, right? I personally wouldn' t be too worried about the cat population declining, but hey, I' m not a cat person. Plus, if you shot one arrow at a Coyote, and had 3 to spare, you still got enough for a deer. (should only take one shot).
Good luck out there. -BJ |
RE: coyotes, to kill or not to kill, your take!
i would probaly take one. ;)
|
RE: coyotes, to kill or not to kill, your take!
Without question. If I have an opportunity, its one less yote:D
|
RE: coyotes, to kill or not to kill, your take!
I would love to take one myself but being from south central down the shore I just don' t think I will see any. But if I ever did I would love to.

RE: coyotes, to kill or not to kill, your take!
hey panhunter i like the lab pic i have an 11 yr old choc, he' s a legend! anyways i had 4 arrows for the season and 5 tags so i was conserving w/ good intentions but still has 4 arrows and 4 tags left at the end of the season!
|
RE: coyotes, to kill or not to kill, your take!
I had two yotes within 30 and 50 yards of me a few weeks ago. It was the morning after I got a doe, and they were probably in the area cleaning up the gut pile.
Anyway, if your not going to mount it, and you surely wouldn' t eat it what else is there to do with it after the kill? There is a good population here where I hunt. I guess if the farmers complain about them, (getting into their chickens, calfs, or pets) I guess I would take one if given the chance. With a bow I guess it is a trophy mounted or just in a picture. |
RE: coyotes, to kill or not to kill, your take!
Ny does have a season on Coyotes - but its open all bow season - and as long as you have a small game tag - they are legal game - and a real bow trophy to boot - I' d take one for sure - I' ve missed two with a bow - I' d have the fur tanned for the cabin wall.
Take one if you can. |
RE: coyotes, to kill or not to kill, your take!
To many pets killed around here to let them go,when
they start taking them off your patio its time to take control, our hunting club has a bumper crop this year and every one will help balance the plate!![:o][:o] |
RE: coyotes, to kill or not to kill, your take!
If anyone feels like traping one alive, I' ll take it.[>:] Right now I have about 6-8 stray cats living in my dumster [:@] and I would love to get rid of the mangy things.
|
RE: coyotes, to kill or not to kill, your take!
kill them all.
go deep hunt hard.;) |
RE: coyotes, to kill or not to kill, your take!
I kill all of em I can.
I think they eat alot of baby turkeys and eggs |
RE: coyotes, to kill or not to kill, your take!
Coyotes are worthy and deserving game animals, I don' t view them as pests but as crafty intelligent predators. I respect these animals immensely and Any Coyote I would take especially with the bow I would consider a great trophy!
And just like any predator their numbers do need to be balanced to stabilize their impact on other game. |
RE: coyotes, to kill or not to kill, your take!
I won' t hesitate to take one. :)
|
RE: coyotes, to kill or not to kill, your take!
If i had the oportunity i would take a yote any day, year round season here. That being said i have never seen one hunting. I dont think they are a problem here but i hear them at nite when police, firetruck, ems, etc goes by with there sirens on.

RE: coyotes, to kill or not to kill, your take!
Bobcat, So eloquently put, " kill them all" . I couldn' t agree more. I also agree with Matt. For certain the coyotes are intelligent predators and accomplishing the awesome task of harvesting one of the wily dogs is commendable to say the least. I have taken two dogs with my bow back in Colorado in the high country where I lived until July of this year. I am however looking forward to taking more here in Washington where I am now. I will post the pics here when I dig them up. Bought a new computer when we moved. Went from a Mac to a PC and have the pics burned on CD somewhere. I also agree with Mr4pt.
Coyotes do indeed eat baby turkeys, adult turkeys, eggs and have an even greater detrimental affect on whitetail deer populations. I have witnessed in Colorado three adult coyotes stalk and take down a mature whitetail doe. They affect the mortality rate sometimes directly of deer fawns. Especially where coyote pop. is dense. Yes, there is a serious need for the management of this predatory animal. Besides, I don' t know about hunting them in the east or midwest but out west like Colorado they are no easy task with a bow. the only good coyote is a dead one....
|
RE: coyotes, to kill or not to kill, your take!
Bow, gun, car, truck, bat, stick whatever... Kill those worthless things
Brian |
RE: coyotes, to kill or not to kill, your take!
Depends on whether or not I think im about to see deer...but probably shoot it. Someone said that if you dont mount it then you probably wont get anything out of it...some parts of texas have a bounty for every yote killed...somethin like 20 bucks a tail
|
RE: coyotes, to kill or not to kill, your take!
Looks like I' m alone here. I don' t shoot what I' m not going to eat. Part of the reason is I wouldn' t know what to do with it, wouldn' t want to clean another arrow, replace another set of blades...
I never saw a coyote in the wild until last weekend. Two walked right under my stand. I thought it was cool to watch. To me, the only good CAT is a dead CAT. One definite exception probably would be a wild dog. The local conservation officer told me that they are responsible for killing more deer in Minnesota than coyotes and wolves combined. Plus, they just kill them and leave them. |
RE: coyotes, to kill or not to kill, your take!
Well Rackluster your not alone. It kind of disturbes me to se hunters say " kill them all" . To me coyotes are an essential part of the ecosystem, just as hunters are.
Coyotes are not a malevolent creature, they are doing what they can to survive and feed their family, no more than we do when we enter the woods. Two months ago I watched a pack of coyotes take down a healthy yearling bull elk. It was awful to watch, yet they weren' t out for revenge they were looking for a meal. Dont get me wrong when coyotes are in abundance thinning is definately required. Coyotes do take their toll on lots of game species (turkeys, antelope, deer and elk) at one time coyotes were the dominant predator in Yellowstone, taking down more game species than the other predators, including cougars ,grizzlies, and wolves. Predators keep game animals on their toes, they heighten the flight responses prey type animals. Without them deer, elk , turkeys would have no reason to flee. Might as well shoot the neighbors cow standing in the pasture. So the next time you think that you would like to kill them all, think how proud you would be to have that holstien cows head mounted in the living room. |
RE: coyotes, to kill or not to kill, your take!
I have no desire at this time
|
RE: coyotes, to kill or not to kill, your take!
I killed three in about 15 minutes last year andI wouldn' t hesitate to pull the trigger on another one. They are worthless and they are amenace to the farmers around here. I' m sure If I asked any farmer if I could shoot G-hogs and yotle dogs they would open the gates to their farms and tell me to have at ' em. fortuneately I have several hundred acres the the yotes use regular ly. We have a rule in our hunt club that you must shoot yotes if they are within range. A rule that is readily adhered to. Last year we killed 15 yotes off of 600 acres.
|
RE: coyotes, to kill or not to kill, your take!
No question about it.....easy decision. Coyotes do not keep anything in balance in my part of the country. They kill cats, dogs, rabbits, quail and turkeys when they can. I have witnessed coyotes chasing and killing a fawn as well. I will not hesitate!
|
RE: coyotes, to kill or not to kill, your take!
Well I have never seen one while hunting, I always thought I would stick one if I had the chance, but after finding out they kill cats I amy reconsider!;)
|
RE: coyotes, to kill or not to kill, your take!
I wouldnt even have to think about it ---------YES I WOULD!!!!!!!
|
RE: coyotes, to kill or not to kill, your take!
No doubt about it, coyotes and timber wolves are a problem around my area. they' ve driven out the deer in a woods I used to hunt regularly. Last week, I took a carcuss of a road kill doe and hung in a tree about 5' off the ground. Laid 6 traps around area. Ended up getting 4 coyotes as they tried to jump up and get the carcuss. Should have seen them when I came back next day to check traps. Snarling and freaking out. Quick shot to the head ended it for them. Will be using this technique again this weekend. Between shooting/trapping/and snaring, that makes 35 coyotes and 11 fox since january. Death to the predators. Tazimna

RE: coyotes, to kill or not to kill, your take!
I agree with Cougar , coyotes kill lots of game animals , and pepoles pets , I ve seen videos of them killing healthy deer , and the bull elk mentioned earlyer shows they dont just kill small game , they allso destroy crops , the reason farmers what them gone . Coyotes will destroy every mellon in a feild by just taking one bite out of each . They are widespread and have large populations . They are smart and allert animals . Its hard to put a dent in their population let alone get their numbers down to " resonable" . I know in Florida and Georgia and Tennesee were I hunt their numbers are out of control . They are not so bad yet in Pa in the area where I hunt . I will shoot anyone of them that gives me a chance . In all the years I' ve hunted I have seen very few not because they arnt there , but because they are very weary .

RE: coyotes, to kill or not to kill, your take!
I regret this already but: Don' t kill them if it isn' t legal to do so. Killing a coyote out of season or without a license is poaching just as sure as jacking deer. If it' s legal for you to " kill em all" then go for it.
|
RE: coyotes, to kill or not to kill, your take!
We didn' t have coyotes in our area until the mid 70' s and our system was balanced just fine. I have killed several coyotes with a bow and even more with rifles.
|
RE: coyotes, to kill or not to kill, your take!
What a bunch of blood thirsty rednecks! [:@] " kill ' em all, worthless things, etc etc" I hope a coyote bites your nutz off!!! I have had shots at yotes on several occasions and have never shot one. I' m not arguing that they should not be managed but to address it in such an idiotic mindset makes me sick! Nice example you set arseholes!!! [:@] These predators have as much if not more right to live in the woods as your buck-toothed @$$ does!!! Your mama gots a wooden leg with a real foot!
|
RE: coyotes, to kill or not to kill, your take!
Since we' ve let trappers on our 250 acres in MI, we' ve seen more turkeys, rabbits, and pat' s. Kill as many as you can.
|
RE: coyotes, to kill or not to kill, your take!
If I had a cat and a coyote in front of me, I' d wait until the coyote ate the cat and then I' d shoot the coyote (felony to shoot cats in New York, if you can believe that!).
Coyotes are an effecient predator, too efficient if you ask me. Their population is increasing around here, yearly. You have to be careful taking out a hunting dog, because it might get eaten by the dang things. We could shoot as many as possible and they' d still be plenty around. I say, keep their population reasonably low. They do too much damage to game animals populations. |
RE: coyotes, to kill or not to kill, your take!
I was lucky enough to kill a ' yote that came into my calling this spring turkey season. Two weeks ago a " Mother" brought her pups to the farm to do some hunting, they took 6 of my 13 year old cousin' s prize chickens that he raises for 4-H. This happend during broad daylight. Last week a person that bowhunts on the same land as I do shot a doe in the evening. The deer ended up traveling about 300 yards. We lost her trail at about 10:00 p.m. and decided to wait until the next morning. When we found her the hind quarters were gone. Saturday a.m. I could hear coyotes yipping. I could identify at least 8-9 different voices. I will shoot again if I get the chance. If nothing else it will make the land owners happy. I wonder how many fawns, turkeys, rabbits, pheasant, grouse that this pack has killed in the past year? Anyone have any figures on the amount of meat needed to sustain a coyote for 1 year? I would be interested in finding out.

RE: coyotes, to kill or not to kill, your take!
In my haste in posting, I want to add this.........I will not hesitate to shoot a coyote while bowhunting simply because I do not hunt them and seldom get a shot at one. I have shot coyotes before, but did so only because the shot was available and coyotes were way overpopulated in my area. I do not/would not practice wiping them out completely.
As far as Taximina' s post........there is no way I could do that!!!! But I will not condemn him for what he does. By the way........I do not rationalize the statement," Death to the predators." |
RE: coyotes, to kill or not to kill, your take!
Just have to put in my 2 cents. I hear lots of people here talking about all the game animals that these coyotes kill and I agree. They do. The problem is that everyone seems to be talking about the game animals, (turkey, deer, elk) like we own them. I hate to break it to you all but game animals are in the woods for more then just sportsmen (and women).
Bears, wolves and coyotes have as much right to the prey animals as we do. Nature does a far better job of wildlife management than we do. Now that said, I do see merit in thinning the number of predators when they are taking pets and livestock. However, I do not see any point in killing them just to kill them. Would I kill one? Can' t say that I have. I guess if I went hunting for them I would. I hear they are a fun and tough creature to hunt. I have just never had the opportunity. |
RE: coyotes, to kill or not to kill, your take!
You do have a very good point NorthernMN. The wild animals do not belong to us. I think a lot of hunters are discouraged because the license fee' s and donations that we make pay for relocation and stocking of game animals. Some people feel that entitles them to a succssful harvest. I had never seen a coyote until the wild turkeys had been re-established with funds from hunters, now there many of both in our area.
It seems to me there are lots of people in your area that have a much different thought process than you, especially with wolves. Talking to people in Middle River,Roseau,Salol,Warroad,Buffalo Bay ect. they all want to shoot the wolves. Especially the turkey farmers. How has the fishing been on LOW? |
RE: coyotes, to kill or not to kill, your take!
Bowhuntray is wright we have a bounty on them in some parts of texas 10 dallars for a set of ears and the ranchers are happy for us to take them.
|
RE: coyotes, to kill or not to kill, your take!
Yeah, Handles maybe we are a litte " different" up here. The wolves debate here is always going on. We have plenty of timber wolves here. We don' t make the laws up herein northern Minnesota. City folks make most of the laws. Most of them have probably never seen a timber wolf. So they think there must not be many of them. Better make them protected. Just in case we run out. The crazy thing is that in Canada (I can see Canada from where I am sitting right now) they are not only unprotected but shot without hesitation.
I look at it like this. It is probably a good thing they are protected even if there does seem to be plenty of them. If they weren' t, hunters would kill them as often as they could because the wolves are always killing " their" deer. Not sure how fishing is right now. It is hunting season after all. As soon as the water gets that hard crust on top I will go fishing again. |
