A line from the " classic" movie Top Gun can be used here....

" The manuver was a success, but I think in this instance we are using it as an example of what NOT to do" . Plain and simple he did' nt have a shot. I think because it was his first deer with a bow.....he was probably nervous. If he had waited longer that deer may have positioned itself right for a better shot. I would say always look for a shot to the lungs or heart. There is much less of a chance of wounding a deer and setting it free. Congrats to your brother on his first deer. In the future I would' nt recomend that type of shot.

Good luck to you his season. I hope you bag a MONSTER the right way to show it and rub it in your brother' s face

Not a good shot on purpose.......lol. Ever wonder why 3D animal targets do not show a kill zone for a neck shot?[]

I have taken many, many animals. Never, even with a rifle, have I taken a neck shot.

A responsible bowhunter should take " high percentage shots" . Will a neck shot kill a deer?? yes, but it isnt a high percentage shot and can result in a bad hit very easy.

For me it isnt being a " ethical than thou" hunter, it is being a responsible hunter. I dont care if its a yearling doe, or a record book buck. If i dont have a good kill shot then i wont take it. Just taking a shot at a deer to shoot it isnt what im out there for............
